  • Impressive :-)

  • brindabella was a lovely boat, that looks like footage from the 1998 Sydney Hobart

  • 0:30 see how the hull flexes. Hate to be on that if it broke in half.

  • @jv2798 that footage was taken in 1998, the boat is still kicking around today

  • i was dumb enough to get stuck in that kind of waves ONCE!!! me and my little CAL-28 got home 1 day and 1 broken shroud and a pulley later plus my heads water intake pipe was very cracked and leaking. That the gods for pipe repair tape. I will admit I never have felt more alive and so desperate to preserve my life. However me and my old boat CAVALIER survived and cruise to this day.

  • Im writing BP. Dear BP although you've tainted my birth states shorelines, I do not expect honesty in any of this from you still.

  • Now instead of a maiden Voyage to Telephone Pole road, TX, I gotta wait on a trucker from Ohio.

  • I guess I am going to have to make some upgrades before Santa gets back.

  • Oh look the nice water conditions. If only there wasn't an oil spill in the way of my Port of Call. Sorry Your Majesty my vessel is not oil tolerant. Looks like I've been postponed again. Maybe I outta go see Leif Ericsson's place again.

  • thats an 80 foot long yacht

  • Yahooooo!

  • It looks like its going to capsizeD:

  • I love sailing, but I would most likely through up if I was on that thing with those big waves. I recommend going to the weakapaug yaught club if you live in westerly rhode island

  • look at that thing cut the water, magnificent

  • you would get soooo sick

  • one month too go again

  • Anyone?

Where can I get this footage and more of the same? I believe the pilot's name is Gary Ticehurst, and it's the tragic 2008 Sydney Hobart race, but I can't find anything but low-res short clips. This is some of the most wonderful sailing footage I have ever seen.

Thumbs up if you don't know but would help me find an answer :)

  • it is so out of the ordinary it looks fake. but its not

  • how am i supposed to hold onto my beer in that shit.

  • @thetalkingelement that's why when you are in this shit you drink whiskey

  • ummm. sailing :)

  • And i thought 2m waves while in a dinghy was bad :L

  • Impressive part is the sails are reefed.

  • you don t wish to be aboard, idiot. Check out critical situation on hell. think it s part one to 5. TV coverage of Sydney Hobart 1998.

that s all about surviving beyond 60 knots of wind, so dude, keep sailing in small breeze, you re not made for this ;-)

  • Brindabella..thats 80 foot of boat

  • There's nothing fake about this footage...

    Clint Jeffrey

    Narre Warren South

  • Very nice, but it's a fake. No helo pilot would get that close to the surface in those wind conditions. Boat is carrying main and good sized jib, way too much for conditions. Check out Richard Bennetts coverage of Sidney-Hobart 1998. Carrying a small jib and booming. I was on a 54' ketch between Bermuda aqnd Long Island when we were caught by the monster no name storm November 1975, bare poles and we were doing 10 knots. Nice film though.

  • @albiescott420 if its a fake how did they do this then? it aint animation

  • that is stupid fucking intense

  • 0:27 - 0:32 this is how big boats get broken. How much did that rig move?

    Definitiely NOT CGI.

  • Awesome! I doubt this is CGI. The other amazing wave riding vid is the Pirates of the Caribbean one. Truly kick butt!!

  • All CGI

  • ide love to do that

  • guys sailing in big waves is a drug if u try to drive it once u gonna try it again even if u know is 50-50 to die

  • this vessel is the kingurra??

  • @lagranhorabruja No, this is Brindabella. It's a 79' Scott Jutson design from the mid-90s.

  • @Camerameister Thanks for the information ^^

  • @lagranhorabruja No worries. :)

  • is this real

  • @graffitiworldclass ya it a race but im not sure which one

  • @graffitiworldclass yep. sydney hobart race.

  • Jack sparrow ain't got shit on this guy!

  • @7StringJay They coined the term "Poop Deck" 'cause of Sparrow and his loose bowels. A common affliction among the "gay" blokes.

  • pbr2424, I have crossed the Pacific under sail, double-handed, in my own boat, taking what I call the scenic route. I love sailing, but the guys in this clip definitely weren't having a nice day.

  • Like sitting in a cold shower, tearing up hundred dollar bills, with the additional benefit of seasickness and the potential of drowning.

  • @BenjaminFranklin99 Bet you never sailed.........

  • @pbr2424 Maybe, maybe not. It's a common saying among sailors and landlubbers alike.

  • I want to get a big ship like a brig and go live on the sea tried of the land goverments bickering and other problems I want to live well and trully free... least I think I do

  • I think the bowsprit is new

  • this is awsome my grandparents did this from usa to bermuda except they hit a hurricane in a 25 ft boat and got out.

  • Separation between the men and the boys their

  • is that a 75 or 100 jib?

  • Most beautiful bit of sail film I've seen. Big boat on the edge - moment 3:00 shows it all. Impressive camera, gonzo boat crew. What are you thinking? And I think the same.

  • Need to get that reef tidied up. This is awesome though. Filmed from a helicopter? Seems dangerously close to the waves...

  • @Rufusdos Filmed from the ABC chopper about 15 years ago. Sadly, the pilot of the chopper, Gary Ticehurst, plus a journalist and cameraman were killed in central Australia about three weeks ago.

  • Really nice sailing, you don't get hat kind of conditions here in Finland where I live :( Planning on sailing over the Atlantic next summer :) just have to find myself a crew

  • Sydney Hobart 1998. Larry Ellison's Sayonara. Crew of 24. Same crew of 1995 America's Cup Black Magic. Many broken bones on this boat. 6 people died in the regatta. This is NOT common sailing, this is racing in the most critic conditions.

  • @alvaroalesso Nah, it's Brindabella

  • @0atmealtogo Just curious, why would you say that? I thought about Brindabella, but found that it has a big bowsprit which this boat hasn't. Maybe i'm wrong!

  • @alvaroalesso The sail number is C1 which was George Snow's Brindabella.

Sayonara won this race but this is not her. I think she has "US" on her mainsail.

  • i wont go diwn cause my dick can float

  • Going pretty fast even for reefing

  • Much respect. A lot more brave than I am. I love sailing, but I'd never go out in sea like that running full sail. I wouldn't want to be in it at all, much less with full sails.

  • @MaxBxOGK

Run that by me in English please. lol

  • My wife would not allow me to do this on our boat! Shame that!

  • what a fucking buzz, to set up an ocean racer to take the sort of loads we sore at 0:31 is a true reflection of a well drilled team, what a fantastic piece of video...

  • at 0:30 the rigger knows if he has done a good job. Look at the forces on the rig/mast. It justs plummets >10 feet down.

  • @petermuellermagic

The main is perfect, what they should do is to change the jib. It actually looks like they have a genoa which is a little bit over the top in those winds. On the other hand, the way they're going, they're probably on top of it.

Nice vid anyway. Sailing at its best.

  • massive waves an the yacht is heeling quit a fair bit to i think ill just stick to our 28 foot yacht

  • Great video. So much stress on the main. Rigging can fail at the most needed of times.

  • yeeaaahhh

  • If you want to learn how to sail like this or just want to learn to sail! Come visit OnDeck ocean racing!

  • you guys are nuts.. wish i was onboard

  • Just owsome!!!!!

Where a those boats, I'm up to be in!

  • Sayonara's sail # is USA17

  • fake? this is sailing

  • damn that mug is ballin like a man in those waves

  • Is it Sayonara?

  • @SkyyCaptainn

    yes it is

  • @twolate2l00k No fake dude this is Sydney to Hobart people die in this race

  • @jezcol Yes, is the Sidney Hobart Race 1998, and yes, people die on the sea in this race.

  • @lagranhorabruja Sydney Hobart not Sidney mate. Don't insult a people

  • @element9977 Sorry, the Google translator no work very nice............U_U

  • @twolate2l00k your mom's tits, maybe. this is just awesome sailing. you should get away from your PC and experience it one time.

  • Nothing like scaring the hell out of everyone on a nice afternoon sail!!!!

  • суперр!

  • Fuck me. The whole rig flexes at 0:28 !

  • fair balls for holding that much sail. Dose give ya nice power to get through them waves !!

  • They've already reefed the main. Looks like a blow!

  • I really like this video.

    Congratulations

  • its amazing how fast they are going with such a small sail area - its sweet stuff!

  • amazing, nice, really very nice...but too much for me

  • Seems to be riding low in the water with little freeboard, or is it just me. Hell what do I know...

  • perfect

  • that looks like a wet ride

  • very nice sailing. I've recently read that cutting large waves at an angle is much preferred in high wind. nice to see a text book example.

  • fantastic sailing! what a ride!

  • one sould respect and have to have guts.

  • "And the ocean waves do ROLL

and the ocean winds do blow,

and the salty tars go skippin' round the deck

while the land lubbers lay down below, below, below

the land lubbers lay down below." sea chantie

  • i like it, like that!!!

  • Poor quality video but in this kind weather conditions nice sailing.

  • wwooooow

  • im getting sea sick just watching dammmmmm

  • that's skill, id done shat me linens

  • man... awesome!

  • sailing these kind of conditions is the most amazing experience. being in a 60 foot yacht and feeling the hull start chattering and skittering like a skiff on the plane is certainly an experience

  • @element9977 Still doesn't beat being out in those conditions in a small sailboat - now that's thrilling.

  • @ThSkBj However, this is the thin line between thrilling and survival conditions ;). I believe this footage is of the Sayonara during the Blue Water Classic of 1998 (correct me if I'm wrong here!)....just before the storm got real ugly. Taken by Gary Ticehurst and Peter Sinclair.

  • @Kvetoshlav Ouch

  • The real skill is in the heli pilot keeping his chopper steady in these conditions!

  • @iriwan Skill of the cameraman too.

  • SPECTACULAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How were the undies after that?

  • Is that how ya do it? She's almost beam on!

  • absolutely beautiful. I'm an ex COASTIE and I miss the big stuff.

  • I did this when I was a bit younger. On days like this, I would ask myself what the f*** I was doing out there. But you can't beat the rush of planing a 50 foot boat, either. So that answers the question.

  • Very nice. She seems well´balanced despite the some what harsh conditions.

  • Ah - a race! I guess that explains the amount of sail he has up under the conditions.

  • sydney to hobart 1998....many boats behind weren't so lucky

  • ZOMG @ 28 sec.

  • Good to see this from the outside of the boat. Now I understand the reason why it may feel sometimes a little uncomfortable when sailing in large waves ;-)

  • my gut dropped at 0:30 and I'm not even on the damn thing!

  • My goodness, was Jesus running across the water filming this? Thats awfully close to the water!

  • what make of boat is this where are they racing and what was the wind

  • I'm translating some sailing rating rules from spanish to english, but as there are many technical words, I can't find all of them.

Do you know how it is said, when there is a lot of wind, when you shorten the mainsail?

All boats which have two masts are called "schooners", or I should say "two-masted boat"?

It is correct the term "long-coursed race" for a race with a long course, or is there an specific word?

Could anybody answer me? Thanks for your time! Great vid, by the way!

  • @espadaanduril Why are you translating sailing rules from Spanish to Englist? I think there are enough information on English already, isn't there?

  • @GHUJSE The rules I have to translate are just in spanish because it is a spanish rating. I've already been answered, but thanks for your interest!

  • @espadaanduril it's called "reefing" namaste

  • @espadaanduril so it is "reefing the mainsail"

  • @espadaanduril call the schooners, and long races are just generally called "open ocean racing"

  • @espadaanduril

    Un poco tarde pero igual te respondo;

Cuando reduces el area de la vela se dice 'reefing'. "Single, double or triple reefed mainsail"

    Saludos!

  • this is why reefing was invented

  • 0:28 :-O

  • like a human life. Wonderfull.

  • impresionante!

  • You can actually watch that hull flex over that one wave. Crazy people.

  • Brindabella is a modified Jutson 79, designed by Scott Jutson launched in 1993 now with a third owner will take part in the 2010 Sydney-Hobart

  • A few of those big ones at the wrong time can cause significant structural damage. Just look at how Larry Ellison's bigger, newer "Sayonara" delaminated with crushed bulkheads in the same race.

  • ...magnifique.....!

  • Thats Brindabella in the 98 Sydney to Hobart. The year that they lost quite a few crew

  • Who is the boat or designer. Very nice!

  • whan I do this wtis my neptun22 my father wat´s to kill me o_O :D

  • Prime seamen for sure

  • hmm.. better go windsurfing : P

  • Reven?!

  • looks like 37 kts and x 2 reefs eh?

  • Simply Awesome! =)

  • Wow! I wanna do that.

  • c est dla bombe bébé !!

et tous ces voiliers à quai tout au long de l'année !!Quelle tristesse !!

meme a thalassa y a pas ça quelle re tristesse !!

    triste pays lol !!

  • That looks awesum!

  • omg... frightening!!!

  • omg o.O

  • Thems some Big frikkin waves... AWESOME...

  • Wow! This is amazing, I wish I could afford a boat like that :( I'm only 16 but I would love to do this lol

  • RAISE THE SAILS NOOB lol jk theyd get fucking owned by those winds if they put that main sail all the way up, props to the skipper !!

  • This is sailing!!!

  • This is the 98 hobart race before all the shit went down!!!!! Sayonara in full flight

  • @kenziemark69 - Pretty sure it's Brindabella. They fought it out with Sayonara for line honors.

  • When you ride like this ,

you are all one .. sea ..air .. emotions .

and if you are alone it's 100 times more intense.

The waves are our fears - The wind is our joy to live.

Sailing is a dynamic meditation ..........

  • umm ya sailings cool but not in that weather i dont sail much but ik u have no time to rest and are shitting all over the deck with seas like that

  • shit like that reminds you that you're an awful small and the sea is awfully big.....

  • Isn't that Sayonara (With Larry Ellison and Lachlan Murdoch on board) from the 98 Sydney-Hobart?

  • @halfcolours Not Sayonara. Brindabella.

  • Isn't that Sayonara (with Larry Ellison and Lachlan Murdoch) from the 90 Hobart?

  • I'm no sailor but how much damage do you think the boat took at the drop at 30 seconds?

  • @Ohsureyado none at all structurally, but after 10 hours of this a shroud may start to get loose

  • Look at the reef in that main lol, you got less than half of it up!

  • beautiful

  • how SHE rides the waves....SHE ,a boat is always a she ,no it.....

  • cant get better than reefed sails and stormy winds

  • 0:30 >> BBBBBBAAAAAAANNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fukkkkkk look at the whole boat flex!!

    I love sailing!!

  • That's awesome stuff right there,, they are kickin ass.

  • this is absolutely amazing and inspiring, what a solid crew they must be running!

  • holy crap ive saile by 2m but that where is dat

  • I hope they all wrote there last will and testamet

  • La fatídica Sydney-Hobart del 98 que sin embargo nos dejó joyas como esta:

  • Masters of the universe! Rock on with your recondite activities :)

  • thats perfect sailing conditions

  • Amazing Footage!
