COuld you talk about software? Because I don't have a lot of money I'd like to know about the cheapest software I can get without wasting my money on rubbish quality. I have problems with a lot of Audacity which noody has been able to explain so far!
very informative. I have no musical talent at all and don't plan to try to write songs and sing but it's all very interesting and i love knowing how this stuff works
I have a condenser mike and I powered it with a small mixing board. It sounded good but then i bought a art preamp and it changed everything and it took it to the next level I believe the pre amp cost $65.00 best money I ever spent.
I have been - for want of a better word - banned from uploading anything on account of my age, and I don't even own my own laptop, but I love singing and songwriting, and will start recording when my siblings deem me old enough. I have a feeling that OurMixTape is going to be handy in starting me offf on the right foot when the time comes.
Great first video, Alan! Will you guys talk about the same thing the whole week, or do you have a different topic each day? I'm sure it's the first one, but I just got a bit confused.
I know that a lot of this channel is about tech stufff, but it would be cool to have a week where you guys talk about your musical influences, or how you got into writing music.
That was extremely interesting! But Alan, you forgot to mention the cheap ten dollar microphones that connect directly to your computer and are probably horrible for recording any kind of good quality music. That's the kind I have (for recorded school playing tests). ^_^
Oh really? Well then I stand corrected. My microphone looks so drastically different from the microphones Alan talked about that I though it belonged to a separate microphone species. Oh well. ^_^
I had an Idea, do you recon other people (like me and other music youtubers) could make guest videos about a certain topic we feel an expert on? I think this idea could do really well, and give this channel a more community feel to it? Ideas Alan?
haha thanks! Sometimes I feel like making a new one because this one makes me feel like a dirty old man (I'm not...I'm a younger woman). But your compliment has given me confidence.
They way you talk into a mic depends on what type it is, yes, but it also depends on the pickup pattern. Condensors generally have a super cardioid, hyper cardioid , figure of 8, shotgun and omnidirectional pickup pattern, depending on what you have. You are right that it requires external power but generally they are powered by phantom power on your desk. Dynamic mics have generally a cardioid pickup pattern but that can vary.
Yea, maybe it's cool to discuss those various options in condenser mics in a later vid :-) I guess for now Alan didn't want to get to technical right away ;-)
you mention that your aim is to help us get the most polished and professional sounding recordings but also something to keep in mind is that many professionals and even amateurs (like me) don't always strive for the most polished sound. In my opinion many lo-fi recordings like those from Neutral Milk Hotel and others are much more sonically pleasing than their polished counter-parts, granted its a tricky phenomenon to achieve i don't think it should be disregarded.
Great video if possible I would like to listen something about mixing vocals, im pretty new to it. Right now I'm trying to emulate a very original technique I found from davedays' songs, having a voice in the middle and then changing it with a voice panned to the left with an almost indistinguishable delay on the right, but I would like to know more. BTW there are also ribbon mics :)
Haha, yeah, but ribbon microphones are typically hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, so I didn't think any YouTuber watching us would need to know about them. =)
Alan could you do a video about the mixing and production of taking leave, specifically the song "Can't" I think it would be really interesting to see how you did all the inkjet printer loop stuff, would be cool :)
2. The concept of singing as close as possible to the dynamic mic is a completely foreign concept to 98% of the people at my school. You wouldn't think standing close to it would be such a hard thing to do.
3. Bill's demonstration was amazing. There should definitely be more in the future [:
Yay for you starting this channel just before I go to uni to study music so I can sound like a pro!
I, like a lot of other people, I reckon, have become well rehearsed in using my computer's microphone, or even just a Skype phone to do all my vocal tracks. It's hit and miss, though! xD
Thank you guys so much for starting this channel. I don't know how many times I've tried to find comprehensive help for musicians working from home on their computers. Keep up the good work.
This video was very informative. I am excited to see this channel expand even though I am not affiliated with anything that pertains to the topics but it seems like information that would be good to know just for random knowledge's sake.
musiciansfriend, zzounds and sweetwater are all great websites to start with, they sell at wholesale. As far as walk-in stores, find a Guitar Center near you. They also sell at wholesale.
I use Cubase 5. It's decently priced, has OUTSTANDING midi features and fits my workflow. I've also used ProTools, which sounds amazing, but is generally lacking in the midi department.
It depends on what and how you record, for some people the portability would be a great choice, for others it would be extremely inflexible and lacking in features.
I agree. I like the fact that it is a very nice mic with a built-in recorder. I can take it with me anywhere I want, record as many tracks as I want, get back home and edit everything in the computer.
It's good because I don't like carrying a lot of equipment around.
I think it's awesome. I've got the H4 myself. I use it to record most of the sound for my videos, live recordings of my band and it's great for quickly recording ideas. Of course it won't work for a professional multitrack recording, but that's not its purpose.
You have no idea how perfectly timed the creation of this channel has been to me. I just started recording my music, and even though I do a TON of research on my own, these tips are going to be so helpful to me.
So here you go, a loyal fan from day 1.
I was wondering if you had any tips on people using a mic that can not be monitored live. I have a Samson C03U USB mic, and there is a latency when trying to listen while recording.
Does your soundcard or audio software offer direct monitoring? You should be able to direct monitor with your soundcard if it's anything above a soundblaster card.
The mic doesn't connect to a soundcard, and it does not have a driver or any software. The only way to monitor it is through recording software. Software-based monitoring is almost always going to have latency. This is something I am came to accept, because I do not have enough money to but a preamp, mixer, ect.
What I was wondering was if you had any tips on monitoring sound...without actually monitoring the sound. If that makes sense.
it can honestly be difficult to pull that off Keith. I have a delay even when I record that I've actually just grown to accept. Now, my delay isn't that bad and I'm not sure how bad yours is, but when you don't have the money to get the equipment, sometimes you just gotta deal with it until you can afford it. This is a topic one of us should cover in more depth though, without question.
Yay for the first video, good job Alan. I like that you explain things throughly without sounding like a kindergarden teacher or without being condescending. Its a happy medium. :)
This channel has a lot of potential, and I and loving it so far!
Autotuning. Do you approve, and if so in which instances is it acceptable to do it? Also, if you use it at all, what software do you use, or could you use?
Great topic. I don't sing, so I don't autotune, but in very lite settings it can help tame a wild track. I haven't had good experiences with it in the past though, so I tend not to use it. Cubase 5 includes two different autotuners. One even analyzes the track and can spit out a midi version, which is helpful.
Excellent start, Alan! I'm liking this channel already. I can sing, but not as well as other amateurs. I'm eventually going to learn how to play the guitar and start doing covers, then slowly start writing my own songs. This channel seems like it can be a good model to learn from.
