  • Thx 4 tha info....

  • wow these are things i never knew about microphones ! ! !!

    1-thnx dude

  • COuld you talk about software? Because I don't have a lot of money I'd like to know about the cheapest software I can get without wasting my money on rubbish quality. I have problems with a lot of Audacity which noody has been able to explain so far!

  • @barefootfiona

    What are your problems?

  • very informative. I have no musical talent at all and don't plan to try to write songs and sing but it's all very interesting and i love knowing how this stuff works

  • Very informative. Thanks, Alan. :D

  • as a musician,

i actually think this channel is going to help me alot.

although some of the things you spoke about here i mostly knew,

i can see myself learning alot from it,

and to know that thelovehatesociety's very own eddplant is on it, it only makes me more exicted.

this will help me out cause for me, i lack in the technical side of music. so this channel will be mega.

  • So I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Headset microphones are a no for this :P

  • i'm quite excited for this :)

you should have mentioned the different polar patterns when you were talking about condensor microphones though

and probably have taken one apart or shown a diagram of how a microphone works

  • I have a condenser mike and I powered it with a small mixing board. It sounded good but then i bought a art preamp and it changed everything and it took it to the next level I believe the pre amp cost $65.00 best money I ever spent.

  • sounds great. Looks great too. What you doing different? It looks like film, not video.

  • Windscreen?

Sounds like something huge you use in sports or in like a wind tunnel to test aerodynamics. I call those pop stoppers :P

  • Cool intro =) I like this, it's actually useful information XD

  • Very interesting, great start to the channel =]

  • That was really interesting and informative! Maybe someday I'll understand my husband when he goes "sound geek" on me! =-)

  • Bill is indeed lovely.

Hi Alan! I am so looking forward to learning form all you (meaning all of you) have to offer from this channel, may I say something though?

I think you should have had examples of what sound quality you get when you use the microphone in the incorrect way.

  • this video is lame. Wait, I mean awesome. I'm so happy this has officially started!

  • I have been - for want of a better word - banned from uploading anything on account of my age, and I don't even own my own laptop, but I love singing and songwriting, and will start recording when my siblings deem me old enough. I have a feeling that OurMixTape is going to be handy in starting me offf on the right foot when the time comes.

    Thanks for doing this, guys!

  • Great start, Alan!

I do sound for a community theatre company, so I would benefit from a discussion on amps, mixers, and sound system design.

  • That was very educational!

  • This is really interesting. I can't sing for my life, but I've always wondered how these things get done.

Can't wait to meet the rest of the guys!

  • Great first video, Alan! Will you guys talk about the same thing the whole week, or do you have a different topic each day? I'm sure it's the first one, but I just got a bit confused.

  • I know Bill has one set up.. but how about a basic intro to bluescreen/greenscreen?

  • I think this is going to be a really cool channel

  • Cameo from Bill! XD

And then there are those of us who have cheap USB mics for use in Skype and that's about it... :P

  • Is the M-Audio Soundcheck a condenser mic? It's what I'm running at the moment.

  • Is your little intro pic supposed to look like the cover of a River City Rebels album, or did that just happen? :-P

I absolutely love the idea of this channel, Alan. There is so much I'd love to know about recording, but I'm too lazy to look up tutorials online.

  • That was really interesting =)

I know that a lot of this channel is about tech stufff, but it would be cool to have a week where you guys talk about your musical influences, or how you got into writing music.

  • I'm really looking forward to the lyrics tutorial thing :)

Though, ALAN ! You're Sunday now- I can't get used to that at all ! D:

  • That was extremely interesting! But Alan, you forgot to mention the cheap ten dollar microphones that connect directly to your computer and are probably horrible for recording any kind of good quality music. That's the kind I have (for recorded school playing tests). ^_^

  • But those are still dynamic mics ;-)

  • Oh really? Well then I stand corrected. My microphone looks so drastically different from the microphones Alan talked about that I though it belonged to a separate microphone species. Oh well. ^_^

  • Can you do something about mixing/mastering? That would be helpful =)

  • check - check - testing - testies - one, two ... three?

    haha, awesome, looks goood.

  • Awesome! looking forward to be watching this channel! Its a really nice idea that you are helping out other people in such away!

  • This channel looks so exciting.

I've been record my own music using Garageband, with the built in mic on my MacBook and creating MIDI with my keyboard.

I've only just started getting the hang of Garageband.

You can really get a very proffessional sound out of it if you know what to do.

My Dad has a mic just like the first one you showed, but I can can never get it to work with my laptop. Perhaps you could help out with that.

  • Comment removed

  • I had an Idea, do you recon other people (like me and other music youtubers) could make guest videos about a certain topic we feel an expert on? I think this idea could do really well, and give this channel a more community feel to it? Ideas Alan?

  • Uke tips?

  • really interesting channel!! you´ve captured every youtube musicians´ interest!!! im looking forward to watching all of your videos!!

  • Thank you so much for posting this! Fantastic <3

  • cool nickname!!

  • haha thanks! Sometimes I feel like making a new one because this one makes me feel like a dirty old man (I'm not...I'm a younger woman). But your compliment has given me confidence.

  • They way you talk into a mic depends on what type it is, yes, but it also depends on the pickup pattern. Condensors generally have a super cardioid, hyper cardioid , figure of 8, shotgun and omnidirectional pickup pattern, depending on what you have. You are right that it requires external power but generally they are powered by phantom power on your desk. Dynamic mics have generally a cardioid pickup pattern but that can vary.

  • Yea, maybe it's cool to discuss those various options in condenser mics in a later vid :-) I guess for now Alan didn't want to get to technical right away ;-)

  • I agree but im a nazi when it comes to teeling the whole story, lol. I love to unload my knowledge in the hope that some one takes something away.

  • Is there anything specific we need to remember while covering a song from another band?

  • OMG!! This is not what I expected, and it's actually going to help me immensely with the project I want to start this year.

And I love the painter's tape keyboard, awesome!!

    I'm really excited for this!!!!

  • Topic ideas:

    1. Garageband

    2. Is there a PC equivelent of Garageband?

    3. Editing your music.

Thats all I can think of right now, I may have more later.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the week!

  • Oh, wow. I subscribed because Bill (Mr. Monday!) told me too and had no idea what to expect. It seems like it's going to be awesome.

  • That was interesting. I like learning things on YouTube.

  • I want ed to talk about fortunes fall and what stuff he uses to make the sound...

  • I learned something :D

  • It was very interesting, but you might concider getting slightly less annoying intro music. :)

  • I think you should talk about GarageBand

  • Yeah, I'm preparing for some serious embarrassment on the microphone front. Your assistant looks somehow familiar...

  • this is awesome!

  • you mention that your aim is to help us get the most polished and professional sounding recordings but also something to keep in mind is that many professionals and even amateurs (like me) don't always strive for the most polished sound. In my opinion many lo-fi recordings like those from Neutral Milk Hotel and others are much more sonically pleasing than their polished counter-parts, granted its a tricky phenomenon to achieve i don't think it should be disregarded.

  • Awesome! :D

  • I'm excited, I love music talk.

    I have 2 condenser mics(MXL 990/991), a pre-amp(Mic-Mate) and a sound mixer (Xenyx 802), but I don't really know what I'm doing.

But there's no way I could describe the help I need with 500 characters, I just hope it gets covered, or I can figure it out.

  • this is really, really interesting.

i am so excited for this channel!

  • Great video if possible I would like to listen something about mixing vocals, im pretty new to it. Right now I'm trying to emulate a very original technique I found from davedays' songs, having a voice in the middle and then changing it with a voice panned to the left with an almost indistinguishable delay on the right, but I would like to know more. BTW there are also ribbon mics :)

  • Haha, yeah, but ribbon microphones are typically hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, so I didn't think any YouTuber watching us would need to know about them. =)

  • That is very true, but you never know lol.

  • Holy crap Bill is monday! I'm a monday! it must be FATE :D

  • Alan could you do a video about the mixing and production of taking leave, specifically the song "Can't" I think it would be really interesting to see how you did all the inkjet printer loop stuff, would be cool :)

  • OMG. NEW PAINTER'S TAPE.

    :D

  • Yes! Youtube educates! See... it's not just funny cat videos. It's educational!

Great idea. I can't wait to see where this channel goes! <3

    -Sara

  • 1.This channel makes me happy.

    2. The concept of singing as close as possible to the dynamic mic is a completely foreign concept to 98% of the people at my school. You wouldn't think standing close to it would be such a hard thing to do.

    3. Bill's demonstration was amazing. There should definitely be more in the future [:

  • What's your favorite part of the music-making process?

  • Sweet! I can't wait to hear/learn more from you guys! :)

  • Yay for you starting this channel just before I go to uni to study music so I can sound like a pro!

I, like a lot of other people, I reckon, have become well rehearsed in using my computer's microphone, or even just a Skype phone to do all my vocal tracks. It's hit and miss, though! xD

  • Thank you guys so much for starting this channel. I don't know how many times I've tried to find comprehensive help for musicians working from home on their computers. Keep up the good work.

    =D

  • This video was very informative. I am excited to see this channel expand even though I am not affiliated with anything that pertains to the topics but it seems like information that would be good to know just for random knowledge's sake.

  • That's a BOSS intro, you got there, Alan.

  • I never realized there were so many things that go into microphones man. I'm excited for this channel cause I know that I'm going to learn loooads.

I also liked Bill's demonstrations, hahah.

  • Alan + one video a week + talking about music = SEXY TIME <3

  • Where are decent some retail-type places (online or walk-in) to start shopping around for recording equipment?

    ~ Jethro.

  • musiciansfriend, zzounds and sweetwater are all great websites to start with, they sell at wholesale. As far as walk-in stores, find a Guitar Center near you. They also sell at wholesale.

  • i love me some alan videos.

hooray for music. it makes my heart happy.

  • Yay for happy hearts!

  • I love this channel. Seriously like, Tesla style. o.0

  • This is a great idea for a channel. I'll be watching.

I'd like to see a topic about acoustics, and what the best placement and setting is for recording instruments like drums and guitars.

  • Whats the best recording software?

  • I use Cubase 5. It's decently priced, has OUTSTANDING midi features and fits my workflow. I've also used ProTools, which sounds amazing, but is generally lacking in the midi department.

  • I use Cakewalk Sonar and Pro Tools. Nothing is the best. Depends on what you want and a bit on what you're used to.

  • Pro Tools 8 is what I find is the best for what I do.

  • I have a Zoom H2. I use it for basically everything. Do you think it is a good choice?

  • It depends on what and how you record, for some people the portability would be a great choice, for others it would be extremely inflexible and lacking in features.

  • I agree. I like the fact that it is a very nice mic with a built-in recorder. I can take it with me anywhere I want, record as many tracks as I want, get back home and edit everything in the computer.

It's good because I don't like carrying a lot of equipment around.

  • I think it's awesome. I've got the H4 myself. I use it to record most of the sound for my videos, live recordings of my band and it's great for quickly recording ideas. Of course it won't work for a professional multitrack recording, but that's not its purpose.

  • Great job sir Distro.... very informative

  • Awesome start, Alan. What's that poster behind you, if you don't mind my asking.

    DFTBA

  • It's from CrimethInc, google them and you can see the poster on google images to read it. =)

  • Sunday,my new favorite day of the week (because Alan's cool) :D

  • I just record with my comp's microphone... uh-oh. I'm gonna ask for a mic for my birthday.

  • You have no idea how perfectly timed the creation of this channel has been to me. I just started recording my music, and even though I do a TON of research on my own, these tips are going to be so helpful to me.

So here you go, a loyal fan from day 1.

I was wondering if you had any tips on people using a mic that can not be monitored live. I have a Samson C03U USB mic, and there is a latency when trying to listen while recording.

    Thanks.

  • Does your soundcard or audio software offer direct monitoring? You should be able to direct monitor with your soundcard if it's anything above a soundblaster card.

  • The mic doesn't connect to a soundcard, and it does not have a driver or any software. The only way to monitor it is through recording software. Software-based monitoring is almost always going to have latency. This is something I am came to accept, because I do not have enough money to but a preamp, mixer, ect.

What I was wondering was if you had any tips on monitoring sound...without actually monitoring the sound. If that makes sense.

  • it can honestly be difficult to pull that off Keith. I have a delay even when I record that I've actually just grown to accept. Now, my delay isn't that bad and I'm not sure how bad yours is, but when you don't have the money to get the equipment, sometimes you just gotta deal with it until you can afford it. This is a topic one of us should cover in more depth though, without question.

  • I've a hunch I'm going to really like this channel.

  • Yay for the first video, good job Alan. I like that you explain things throughly without sounding like a kindergarden teacher or without being condescending. Its a happy medium. :)

This channel has a lot of potential, and I and loving it so far!

  • I'm going to make this project into a playlist as it goes along for conveinence to newer viewers when the project gets going

  • awesome

  • So yeah... let's just say I'm one of the 90% :P

    The learning has already begun!

  • This is gonna be a brilliant channel for aspiring artists and bands. I'm learning stuff already!

  • Yay, thanks for watching.

  • Autotuning. Do you approve, and if so in which instances is it acceptable to do it? Also, if you use it at all, what software do you use, or could you use?

  • I want to hear everyone's thoughts on this too.

  • Great topic. I don't sing, so I don't autotune, but in very lite settings it can help tame a wild track. I haven't had good experiences with it in the past though, so I tend not to use it. Cubase 5 includes two different autotuners. One even analyzes the track and can spit out a midi version, which is helpful.

  • Excellent start, Alan! I'm liking this channel already. I can sing, but not as well as other amateurs. I'm eventually going to learn how to play the guitar and start doing covers, then slowly start writing my own songs. This channel seems like it can be a good model to learn from.

  • def. start doing covers!

  • Thanks Bill!

  • I'm so excited for this channel. Great first video Alan! =)

  • It's still saturday here lol

This channel sounds like it's going to be awesome. =)

  • we call talking directly into the mic... "eating the mic" in the showbiz biz... or at least that's what i call it.

  • haha, that works. Every time I produced a band in college I had to tell them to get closer. No, closer. CLOSER!

  • hahaha FIRST!

    love you, Al Pal.

  • Hey KT Pal, thanks for watching.

  • I feel like I'm cheating for watching this while it's still Saturday here :P

But thanks for all the information! I don't really know anything about audio recording, so I get the feeling this channel will be quite helpful.

  • Do you plan on recording anything? Did you give in to the YouTube peer pressure and buy a Uke?

  • I don't have any specific plans right now, but you know, I could always get my rap career started ;)

  • Talk to saradod on that end, she's the queen of T-Pain'ing it.

  • FIRST! I MEAN AWSOME

  • This channel is amazing! Alan this video is great, and I can't wait for everyone else's video

  • Thanks, I'm really looking forward to this week too!

  • :3 Loving the whole idea for this channel. Excited for it to really get going and build momentum.

  • Me too, originally this video was nine minutes long, I'm going to need to learn to talk less. Or edit more.

  • this is going to be the most awesome and useful channel ever.

    thanks, alan!

can't wait for the rest of the week =)

  • Yay, I'm looking as forward to it as everyone else.

  • i'm gonna learn so much haha

  • First! lolololol cant wait for this channel!
