PMV stands for Passey-Muir Valve. It goes on the tracheostomy tube. The valve opens when they breath in and closes when they exhale/breath out forcing the person to breath out the mouth/nose instead of the trach. The passing of air through the vocal cords is what makes sound. Typically people who require a trach to breath cannot make sound without the valve unless there is enough air pushing up past the trach.
