the movie the other guys has a skit in it where the charactor sings his problems in a choir that is because it has been done in other countrys Traditional Folk Music and Songs where they sing their days problems that they face this has been going on for centurys i dont remember the country that started it
Psychology Today has an article about this choir! The link is on the Psychology Today website in 'The Squeaky Wheel' blog or @GuyWinch on twitter "have you heard of complaint choirs?"
The idea is generally not bad, but imagine this song in the Third World. THink out of the box! It is not only about having troubles with your neighbor chewing too loud.
@rusalkarin ahem, as far as i know many of these complaints are sarcastic and make fun of people who complain without thinking of people who have it way worse. i'm not sure, i really hope that's how it is... but either way i take the complaints with a grain of salt haha.
Such a simple concept. Brilliant and well-done. Not heavy-handed either. Hopefully people will stop and think about this the next time they are about to fly into a rage because a washing machine at the laundromat left their clothes sopping wet.
The "Rapture" / Global Warming lyric is genius. I'd love to hear a New York version of this.
I just visited Chicago for the first time and agree with so much of this! I had a great time in your city, but I noticed some of its faults. This was brilliant - perhaps the best Complaints Choir since Helsinki!

Leave it to Americans to turn their complaining into an art form. Oh well, there's no excusing bad art..
As a Chicagoan, I'm embarrassed that my fellow citizens are wasting their time in such a obviously pointless manner. If these people used half of the time spent rehearsing this song to actually make their lives better, wouldn't that make more sense? Oh I forgot, nowadays we like to complain and wait for someone else to fix our problems.
As a fellow Chicagoan, I'm embarrassed that there are close-minded individuals like yourself in my area who fail to see the purpose or usefulness of channeling normally negative energy into a creative and positive expression of art.
You have neither the knowledge nor place to say that these people would prefer to complain rather than act. Yes, some of them might behave as such, but most likely not all.
And for the record, the choir started in Helsinki, it's not just an American thing. =P
I hate people who think people who complain are just whiners, and need to get a life. I hate that negative view you know.. This dude doesn't even know anyone on the choir I bet. I find this to be really creative!!!! MY cousin almost did the one in tokyo, but decided to opt out on it (lives in sendai) I wish I was back in tokyo last yr to do it. XD the singapore one is my fav. still. lived in boon lay for some time XD.. I'm an okie btw but lived in chicago for a bit of my childhood
the project originated in europe (finland first, i believe). So while Americans are good at complaining, let's also acknowledge that the core concept of the video series isn't American.
the point is not where this originated though.. the pt is to have enough self-awareness to be able to laugh at yourself. some of this is not about problems that need solving, but just annoying details that frames everyday lives. surely its not an embarrasment to recognise faults and fallacies any more than it is to be human!
and the pt is to connect people. before doing anything, you need to socially acknowledge and often create a discourse around a problem that extends beyond yourself. there are contradictions voiced here, both sides of which are are recognisable by others! i think sharing frustrations is a fascianting way to release tension ..it makes people more "equal". :)
I moved from Chicago to Berlin 8 years ago and that has reminded me of my life there more than anything has in a long time. Love to you all! Focus on the positive things in life!
The last 2.5 minutes of this could be the closing of "Chicagoland, The Musical"

Almost everything is spelled incorrectly or wrongly punctuated or capitalized in the subtitles.
