I have a Civic VTI Hatchback and my father had a Punto GT. Right next to each other, Punto kept up, until VTEC kicked in. Then VTI's goes away nicely. That's the story.
By the way, the faster you go (from say 60 mph/100 kmh up) the more advantage to the VTI.
VTEC won't make any difference if the punto has a slight boost increase to 1.2 bar. The heavier, torqueless Civic will be left to dry, especially in the mid range.
punto gt is absolutley original. i build up the engine new. new setting of the timing belt and ignition timing. i had a rice from 0 160km/h against a CRX Del Sol VTi. It was highly modded with full racing exhaust, Racing exhaust manifold an other mods.. i was faster than the crx! and i'm not lieing! i don't got away really fast from him, but i was faster. and if some of you guys now say that this is a fake that i'm writing... the honda was my best friends car, he knows to drive!
the civic must be in bits cause vtec kicked in and no extra power at all then the driver bounces off the limiter instead of quick shift! amateur at best! im not surprised the punto kept up with such poor driving skills!
SOHC VTEC doesnt sound like a DOHC atall

I was talking about cars with stock specifications. As you can increase boost in the GT, there are lots of things that can be done in the VTI.

You can clearly hear VTEC kick in so it's B-series anyway.
