  • I just checked on googlemaps and they aren't sealed off.

  • OMG that is the building I work in. 1:07-1:12. The doors people came out of, that side on the first floor is the day care now and I think those doors are sealed off. On that curb there is the bus stop.

  • I think those sirens going on and on for three hours would get a little grating...

  • Did this really happen? People practicing to be ready for nuclear annialation? Boy! I bet people had nightmares every night, imagine having to comfort a screaming child all the time. I sure am glad I wasn't born then. Maybe that's why the children grew up and turned crazy in the late 60s, the Baby Boomers, Tune out and turn on, I bet half of them are so brain damaged from all that dope they done they won't live past their 80th birthdays.

  • Wow Portland looks so different back in 1957. I live downtown and only recognize a few of the buildings.

  • The funny thing is, at this time, they still did not fully understand the EMP. It took years before they figured that one out..

All I am saying is that the EMP will be just as bad as any FALLOUT or HEAT. One Nuke strike in the center of the United States will result in a EMP wave that will envelope the continent.

That means no ATMS, Lights, Tv's, Cars with computer chips in them, Computers, everything with a motherboard or electric goes bye bye. And there is no insurance policy for that.

  • erm... i don't think it will take out the entire continent...

  • cautionthisisparta, if you search anything concerning EMP's on google.. you'll see that I'm actually correct.

I wasn't saying it to be dramatic, only factual

  • @MacPete187

To be honest, a nuke that would EMP the entire US would need to be detonated so high up as to not cause any thermal/blast damage. One that would destory a city would only knock out electronics a hundred miles or so beyond the blast radius.

And anyway at the time this movie was made electronics were too primitive to be effected by EMP.

  • Broadway st. from 5:05-5:30 (Why didn't they put them on Harbor Drive? )

Also, the 1905-1958 Morrison Bridge @ 5:45, I thought it was the Broadway bridge at first, but the span to the left of the screen is wrong for the Broadway bridge.

unless its some other bridge elsewhere I'm not aware of.

  • This is efficient thanks to proper planning from the top down. The populace in no small measure helped. I wonder why Katrina was such a debacle?

  • @wkat950: Unfortunately, such an orderly evacuation would not be at all likely during a real nuclear attack. In fact, there would probably be panic in the streets for the last hour or two before the bombs hit{probably even sooner for those launched from subs}.

  • fema needs to watch this and revamp it

  • Well, I guess they ran the "attack is not taking place" more than one time, but still they needed to keep it on the screen for the entire program.

  • Would these people evacuate so slowly if this was a real attack? They need to take their defense exercises a bit more seriously.

The producers of this old CBS documentary are gracious to put "this is not a real attack" at one point in the video. By not running this disclaimer through the entire program they risked a mass panic on the magnitude of "War of the Worlds"

From the title, you might think

  • Thanks a lot Alaska and Canada...couldn't get off your assess to shoot down a couple of bombers for us in Portland?

  • Ah, the long gone Orpheum theater. Now a Nordstrom stands in it's place.

  • That Asshole stole a chopper.

  • The bombers are probably headed for Seattle, not Portland. They're going to nuke Boeing back to the stone age.

  • orderly w/o panic, well done

  • I other words, completely fictional.

  • Amen, brother! People in America panic and stampede when a new toy or model of iPhone goes on sale. I could only imagine what today's America would do if the sirens sounded.

  • Lol yeah, and another reason why-if it has to happen-Walmart should be ground zero.

  • I hope they walk and drive faster to evacuate in case of a real attack. In the defense drill they weren't moving too quickly.

From the title, one could think that they were going to a rave-oh, yeah, a day of X

  • @brucearmstrong1 tweet about it and put it up on their facebook
