  • from 2.27 there is one of the most extraordinary moments of slowing down set against quick mental calculation and reaction I have ever seen in the cinema. It is ten seconds of genius and almost totally original. In the cinema , it is electrifying.

  • Haven growing up in NYC at this time, the scene captured the angst all New Yorkers had of riding elevators. Muggings, rapes, slashings, beatings took place daily in elevators all across New York circa 1980. This film is excellent on so many levels but is outstanding for capturing the psychological fear and terror which had enthralled NYC at the time. NYC today is another planet. If you didn't live there at the time, you simply think this is simply De Palma's imagination or exagerration.

  • from the first cut to her hand, this scene always gave me the creeps, depalma did his job, perhaps one of the scarest scenes ever and the part where she sees the killer in the mirror at the last moment, genius great film making

  • Such a funny movie. De Palma's jokes are of the insidious variety, verging on camp but deliberately so, and with a tongue-in-cheek wit that isn't much around these days. Yes, the screaming cleaning lady is hilarious, as is the music, which sounds like a PARODY of "serious" dramatic tension. All the other hysterical stuff in the film - I especially like the seduction scene between Michael Caine and Nancy Allen toward the end - is classic.

  • oh god...first angie dickenson lost her glove at the museum, caught a venereal disease at a stranger's apartment, lost her wedding ring, and now she's getting slashed by a psycho. today's just not angie's day :(

  • I LOVE this movie! It's DePalma's best film, and Angie was magnificent! I just watched my DVD tonight, and it gets even better with each viewing. I agree with ricke1100, she sould have gotten an Oscar nomination for this performance! A+

  • push it ONCE ya DUNCE

  • Okay, remove knife, so "she" doesn't use it on victim anymore. check

add witness to add drama, and confusion to police.

& she witnessed a woman in the elevator, add difficulty to find real suspect.

IT SEEMS CORRECT & WELL WRITTEN TO ME...

WHAT THE HELL IS WORNG WITH PEOPLE, SOMEONE WHO HAS PROBABLY NEVER DONE ANYTHING WITH THEIR OWN LIFE BITCHING ON THE COMPUTER ABOUT OTHER PEOPLES WORKS... FUCK THEM...

    This was good!

  • LOL that woman screaming in the hallway is HILARIOUS !!! as is the music too !!!

the elevator scene is really gory YUKK !!!

love this movie !!!..one of my all time favorites :-))))

  • ouch

  • This is from an era when blacks and whites lived in the same buildings, I remember those NYC days. If this movie had been made today the black women would be replaced with a screaming old white women.

  • WHY does she have the KNIFE in her hand....OH i know why!! Because her Husband is the Director!!! LAME SHIT

  • @UFOSPACE1999 piss off then you twat

  • @farfisa fartisa....I am right.....LAME SHIT...amit it..WHY did she pick up a knife? HUH DA....stoooopid shit.

  • @UFOSPACE1999 She picked up the knife probably for evidence. Write a better movie before making stupid comments about people's movies.

  • @UFOSPACE1999 I really want to respond to your comments dear Hymen, but I can't understand a word you've written. It's because you are uneducated and from the underclass which I don't hold against you, but there is no hope for you. I only hope you can find someone who will be able to read this to you.

  • omg i used to think this film was awesome, now it looks so dated and ridiculous.

Its all style with no substance and the death scene looks so fake.

Oh who am i kidding i still love it lol

  • @MundyArtStudio Shoot, it stills scares me for being scared the first time. No doubt I was nervous in elevators for a while.

  • I believe that had it not been for the over-the-top violence and nudity, Angie Dickinson would have been nominated for an Academy Award. The museum scene alone would have qualified her- she certainly deserved one. DePalma's best film.

  • @rickw1100 Hard to believe she was 49 at the time!!!!

  • @rickw1100 The museum scene is superb! Totally without dialog. All the acting conveyed through facial reactions & bodily gestures. Angie was great!

  • Bobbi always seemed to be a very calm killer, always seemed sure of her/himself in thinking of not getting into a glitch in the any attack or murder, especially on subway trying to kill Liz in front of Gangsters and other ppl on a train, also in the Elliotts office when the identity is revealed, Bobbi was going to slash Liz in front of a police officer, who is seen clearly in Bobbi's view, bit of a dumb killer if you ask me, although Bobbi succeeded in killing Kate first time, that Liz witnessed

  • Love DePalma

  • Hooray! I love this scene!

  • I think killing off Angie Dickinson so soon in the movie was to add to the shock value and catch the audience more off guard.

  • I think it would have been more effective and less brutal / violent to women to let Angie shows " the terror " through her acting / facial expressions, plus various " body positions " ( jerking / trying dodge the razor ) and ripped clothing ( like her skirt ) as this would be terrifying even without the gore. And I don't Angie deserved to die since she could have still had some scenes ( in hospital ) to do. She's very beautiful and it was a waste to lose her at that point. Regards.

  • This scene is smiliar to Alfred Hitchcocks " shower scene " with Janet Leigh and Fellini's various viloent women scenes. I've seen the movie and I love Angie in it ( especially an earlier scene ) but I think it was unnecessarlity brutal and " violent to women " to show the attacker cutting her throat and face and that she died as a result; they could have had her wounded and evacuated to a hospital but play no further part in the film as per the plot. More to come.

  • why does the camera zoom into 7 vey close? it feels like i'm missing a very important clue.

  • What was with that soft lens effect in this film? Was it part of De Palma's visual style as a director or a device used to make Dickinson appear younger? I know that softening lenses/filters were very popular with older American actresses during the 50s and 60s but it fell out of vogue after the 70s. Liz Taylor supposedly had them written into her studio contracts and was rarely filmed without a filter (to conceal the wrinkles). Anyone know if this was De Palma's idea in this case?

  • i love the psycho references in this scene.

  • I love it when the lady saves her shopping goods at 02:40!

  • @lupinostar With the price of groceries, the way they are, you gotta save them groceries! or else she'd have to take another trip to the A&P.

  • I always thought that Bobbi dropped the razor so that the elevator doors would open again, in order for Bobbi to be able to kill Nancy Allen too, and that's why Nancy Allen picked it up, so the doors could close and she could get away... haha :-)

  • 4 people were killed by Bobbi.

  • Un dressed to kill

  • The best scene of any Brian de palma movie.

  • I almost never get scared.

But that scene was really scary and creepy. It was amazing! :D

  • @FearTheEyeliner It was all Angie. Her reaction to the razor slicing her skin is what made the scene.

  • Just like the shower scene in Psycho..this scene is just as shocking and brilliant!

and to top it off is the hilarity of the woman's scream at the end...LOL

  • This was such a well shot scene. The only downfall is the music in spots. At a few points it was perfect then it falls short, especially at 1:22 until 1:31.

  • How appropo was it that she was dressed in a white outfit...I still get the creeps when I have to get in an elevator thanx to this movie!

  • that cleaning lady sream is ampled to a hip hop song intro from a few years ago...i think it was from the Ying Yang twins.

  • Who would be stupid enough to pick up the razor?

  • @Acme633 Nancy Allen, apparently. :)

  • haha yeah me too!

  • A Hitchcock disciple to be sure! This scene has always reminded me of a more graphic Shower Scene. Though Angie is a fine actress, she cannot top Janet Leighs depiction of sheer terror.

  • if the c(_)nt knew like krav maga she would have snapped that she-he s neck .....

should have been studying krav maga instead of taking it in the asss in the shower the sugar slut !

  • If someone has the soundtrack could someone put up "Death In the Elevator by Pino Donaggio"

  • What glasses was Bobbi wearing?

  • Mr De Palma had been watching Dario Argento's work before making this methinks!

  • @bluegrasslass I couldn't help notice some similar vibes. Although I don't think Argento would let Nancy Allen get away.

  • @wevetra13 Good point! :D

  • The scene will forever creep me out!!!!!!

  • remington..... as close as a blade or your money back.

  • deliciosa

  • excelente film

  • Hitchcock would be proud, shame he never saw this sequence!

  • Well DePalma did idolize Hitchcock somewhat and modeled a lot of his fims and directing style after him, so that would probably explain it! :)

  • This scene vs. the Psycho shower scene! Both are beautifully directed (although this scene has a heck of a lot more gore than the shower scene).

  • The little girl knew what was coming

    for Kate.

  • Is this scene UNCUT on the DVD?? I have to buy it now if it is.

  • Yes.

  • Thanks. I already bought the DVD though. Since seeing this video, of course.

  • LOL!!!! EXCELLENT!!!! Amazing reply! That's reply of the year, right there!

  • at 3.19 - 3.20....is art of the screen

  • at 0.01 - 3.23....is art of the screen ;)

  • I don't understand why it's being referred to as the uncut elevator scene. It looks to me she was really all cut up.

  • Yeah but it pisses me off at Michael Caine's "manwoman" for dropping the razor deliberately, knowing the other gal would pick it up and get blamed for it! LOL

  • I'd never heard the name of this movie until I remembered this scene tonight and decided to look for it. I remember seeing this very clip on TV when it came out, the only clip I remember. LOL

  • I love this movie! This scene alone is filmmaking triumph next to the museum sequence.

  • I saw this years ago and this scene still makes me wince with its brutality.

  • Yep they had some pretty violet slashers throughout the 70's and early 80's.

  • Depalma is so good at the slow motion, i wish he would make another horror movie...

  • how i love this...they really dont make them like they used to...

  • i think this is what would have been in psycho if hitch had wanted us to see the stabbing. even through i know it is not real...i can still feel the knife!!! wow!!

  • Ah, De Palma. Love him or hate, this scene is a sheer celebration of cinematic technique.

  • I love this movie. Brian DePalma made some truly excellent thrillers back in the 1970s/80s, maybe one day he'll make another...

This scene is reminiscent of Hitchcock's Psycho - don't think anyone's going to deny that - but has anyone seen the Italian movie "The Case of the Bloody Iris"? There's even more similarities there!

On a side note, I met Nancy Allen at a convention on Sunday. She's just as lovely in person now as she was in these old movies. :-D

  • i certainly don't think the term "Uncut" is appropriate. LOL

  • Well it is when most of the gore you just saw was cut in the original "R" theatrical version.

  • i think the other guy meant that Uncut isn't appropriate because he cuts her with the razor.

  • hay otra version de esta escena en que la pantalla se divide en dos y muestran simultaneamente a nancy allen y el elevador, q me parece una edicion mas interesante, sin embargo, la pelicula es genial!

  • good effects considering its age.

  • so why was her hand throbing

    was it the elevator or...

  • Yeah the elevator; you can hear it clanking.

  • brian de palma is simply ---the greatest----; Brian, we love you and waiting for the next movie. Best regards!

  • great movie,,,but u have to watch the uncut version to fully enjoy

  • That was in the 80´S one of the best movies

    and it´S still.

  • Sure it's a bit 80-tastic but I thoroughly enjoyed this Psycho update.Angie Dickinson has maybe two pages of dialogue and has to convey a lot!

    A strange odd little gem.

  • This was a very suspenseful movie. Who knew that Michael Caine was the tranny killer who had an obsession with blonde women? And that he killed them because he was a pre-op transexual and they aroused him? How crazy was it that Angie Dickinson died a' la Janet Leigh in Psycho/Jada Pinkett in Scream 2??!! Man! But it was kinda weird that the chick who saw the killer in the elevator was the John Travolta's girlfriend in Carrie. This was a real good movie!

  • SPOILER*SPOILER*SPOILER*SPOILER

  • You know, it's funny that the actor who played the killer in this scene (not giving a name, but this is kind of a giveaway for movie buffs) went on to play a character named "Cutter" later on.

  • this movie is so good! the music and the tension remind me of psycho, the murderer is also some kind of norman bates!

  • it's just too good to be true. what a fab sequence. perfect!

  • lovely:)

  • now i wanna see this movie!

  • Angie Dickinson is my all-time favourite pin-up, & it is almost painful for me to watch her getting slashed to death with a razor. Although very suspensefully filmed & edited, i am not going to watch it again. I would far rather watch her in that taxi scene from DTK.

  • wow, I've never seen that last cut to the carotid artery before. The bit to the head I saw in a De Palma documentary. That made me feel a bit ill for a second and I'm not easily queezed - no wonder they cut it out! Have to say that Brian is my favourite director but I dare say his misogyny went a little too far in this version. Nevertheless, as a thriller, it is brilliant cinematography, music and editing. Gonna go puke now!

  • Can you buy a version of DTK on region 2 DVD with that unrated elevator sequence?

  • Dunno; I believe that the US R1 DVD has the uncut version and the mono soundtrack (which it damn well should), but I'm not 100% certain.

  • What horrible acting....

  • Soo Fabolous, depalma y realy good director

    my favoryte film "BLOW OUT"

    good youtubed video.

  • God, what a murder. I rented the unrated director's cut DVD of 'Dressed to Kill' nearly two years ago, and it still has me in awe. Considering that Alfred Hitchcock was director DePalma's outspoken greatest influence, you can certainly draw a good number of parallels from this film to Hitch's 'Psycho.' I prefer this (gorier) version of the murder to the theatrical cut, which sucked. When Caine and Allen's eyes meet in the security mirror at 2:29, I almost scream myself. Masterful.

  • Lucky you, i totally pissed myself. Listen to the music carefully, i got chills...

  • God I wish that happened to Yukis mom from fruit basket the god forsaken bitch.

  • de palma was the master of suspence. take all his money from him, maybe that can force him into making these kind of movies again. love U de palma, for those beautiful movies U used to make.

  • As amazing as this scene is, I think it works better when one sees a bit more of its "head" — where Angie's character comes from, and her motive for going up (the realization of losing her ring, and of her afternoon "mistake"). It explains the distress in her expression and her teary eyes, all of which makes her demise even more sorrowful. Thanks for posting the uncut version, though; after all this time, it's still VERY chilling!!!

  • Wow, thats my Video Collection print in the bin!

  • So Michael Caine's the one in the costume? Maybe it's time Jun Kazama come in there and BREAK THE KILLER'S ARMS, if you ask me. :0)

  • I agree, this movie is a near masterpiece. Having a big star like Angie Dickinson killed off so early in the movie made it even more shocking. The cinematographhy and music are absolutely brilliant!

  • dePalma stole that (as he does everything) from Hitchcock; Janet Leigh is killed off early in Psycho, confounding audience expectations. I love how both witnesses come rushing to Angie's aid. His filmic setpieces, throw away any common sense or realsitic motivation, which Hitch didn't do.

It builds to, and ends with, Nancy getting the blade? Uhm, ok, sure...

Also very few scenes can survive Nancy Allen who is truly a horrible actress.

  • Hitchcocks set pieces never threw away realistic motivation in favour of a set-piece? You have seen 'North by North-West' I'm assuming?! You truly are a knob chock.

  • I really hate N B NW for that reason. It's his weakest movie IMO, despite the legions of fans. Hitch's motivation never makes you blurt out "Who are these stupid peole and what planet are they from?"

  • It's a sex satire. It's playing on the formalistic devices of thrillers with all there Freudian overtones, but with a comic touch. You can't approach this film looking for realism.

  • @knobchock the real influence for this scene was NOT psycho but dario argento's the bird with crystal plumege

  • @sjohns1974 Yeah, people are really stupid enough to "reference" dario argento's crystal plumage. They reference this scene with psycho instead.

  • @sjohns1974 Actually-if you look close, it references both Psycho and Plumage. Slashing, killer in drag- good Samaritan unable to save victim. A truly brilliant scene.

  • I just saw this movie for the first time, thanks for posting this. This movie was def. out there for 1980, it's something special. Angie Dickinson was very fine for an older woman...

  • I still got a bit squeamish in a few parts...I'm not a blood and gore veteran...

  • Now we know what Ann Coulter does when "she's" not on tv.

    ^

    I lol'd.

  • Terrible acting, bad editing, don't know where all the praise comes from.

  • Expensive but cheesy--from the mock-Herrmann music to all of the slo-mo. Like a student movie with a budget.

  • Now we know what Ann Coulter does when "she's" not on tv.

  • I've seen homemade teenage movies on here with more realistic violence and blood. The acting is laughable. The music sounds like it was recycled from a rejected 70's TV melodrama soundtrack. And the cheesy zooming in/out camera work is more dated than disco. De Palma is a hack among hacks.

  • Go jump out of an elevator.

  • You´re stupid. DePalma is a genius. You probably haven´t ever heard of the symbolism of vision in slasher movies. That´s where the zooming comes in!! It works on a cinematic meta level!

  • Moron.

  • You should probably consider the fact that Dressed to Kill was made in 1980 before you attacking it for being "dated". Every film becomes dated at some point and I don't think there is such a thing as a "timeless" film. I think Dressed to Kill is a near-masterpiece, although it does lose a bit of steam after Angie Dickinson is killed off. The music is brilliant, the acting is superb, and the camerawork is beautiful. Go back to watching Saw and leave classics like Dressed to Kill alone.

  • Thank you for posting, I had never seen the uncut version of this scene...
