Oh, how great this song is!!! I watched this video, I think it's from the "Up close " DVD by Tommy and I think this DVD is the highlight of his artistic career. He seems so confident and warm on all of his songs. Tommy opened me a whole new world of music and in this way changed my life forever.
agreed you gotta realize that this guy is playing a walking bass line, basically rhythm guitar, and he's noodling with solos and arpeggios all at the same time
@huix107 Yes, that's his strength - the both the diction and rhythm is always excellent. There's rarely any unclean notes. If anything is a weak spot, I will very meekly point out the phrasing and dynamics are often not quite what they should be. Each phrase is kind of monotone and the ebb & flow is a little timid. The melody line is often no where near as pronounced as it should be. All that said - he is a master.
This guy prooves that using the thumb can can be very functional and adds a frugile ability, sort of like " economy of movement" approach not to mention he shows how to incorporate pretty much every type of guitar technique under the sun.
I have learned alot about the "guitar" by watching this particular musician
I can't agree with u more. i'm a big tommy fan i play the guitar myself but i'm looking for tips or tricks to train my thumb to get it started. Maybe u know what i should do.
I've been learning classical guitar for over 6 years now but had been learning contemporary for 5-6 years before that. You were wondering about how to get your thumb moving- classical guitar is the way to go for that sort of training. It's pretty underestimated in what it can do when applying it to contemporary guitar. I've found classical training invaluable when technique and agility, especially when it comes to moving the thumb cos it trains the thumb to think for itself!
thnx for your tip, i have had classical guitar lessons myself for 5 year. But you dont learn fingerstyle playing with a thumbpick. I found a video from tommy emmanuel on youtube "boomchick" where he explains it very good so iam learning that now thnx.
I am sure I have seen Tommy Emmanuel play an acoustic using both types of pick. I imagine he chooses the one that is most suited to what he wants to play.
yes, he uses both a fingerpick and a plectrum (hand pick). And he also uses no pick sometimes too. It all depends on the type of sound you are after. Warmer sounds come from no pick, whereas a pick tends to create a strong 'attack' on the notes, making them sound 'harsher'. It is like singing a 'la' sound for smoother, well connected phrases, and 'ta' sounds for more accentuated phrases.
Truly inspired, Tommy. When i first started watching your playing i wanted to give up even pretending to focus on my own guitar "style", but i've reconnected with the instrument that brings me such joy. Respect. Chops or what, eh?
... Tommy! IS - Mozart at his highest state of composition before he died,... there is no other comparison in this world,.... if MOZART was alive today, he would have surely embraced Tommy as his most beloved smaller brother...
i think i was going to say im not particularly into them haha then thought of partial a little too late lol funny thing is, i usually read over my comments to make sure i make sense. i think that would probably get a 'd' hahaha
This is a great player , he truely expresses his heart with his guitar..he's just greatly inspiaring for all of us..if we can't play it or not , atleast you try ;)
Love his way of showing how we must enjoy our play and not allways try to be the best ;)
He just had a musical priviledge life , but also known his downsides.
Tnx Tommy , you 're a grand contribution to all music-lovers !
how many times have you watched a musician play an instrument. because your comment suggests this is your first. try to think of one accomplished musician that doesnt play with their eyes closed at times. when you feel music deeply, it kind of naturally happens... you fall into it inadvertently.
i love this man all his songs are so lush how are they ALL so fuckin good its not human and you can tell every time he plays he gets lost in the music fuck!
i hope so im trying to learn it now!!!!! and im finding quite tricky but i remember struggling alot more with angelina just got 2 keep my head down now lol

lol " huge plastic sidewards-growing fingernail" lol
its called a thumb pick :P
but no, he uses a flat pick.
"huge plastic forwards-growing fingernail" :P
thats why if you watch the video, his thumb and forefinger remain together to hold the flat pick in place..
you made me laugh though haha :)

Check out 00:17, there's no pick. He braces his index finger with his thumb and uses his index fingernail as a pick on the fast lead melodic lines.
Tommy is a wonderful player!
davesfrontporch 3 years ago
Actually, look at 0:50 and you'll see he has a flat pick in his hand.
veightnut 2 years ago
sorry, but i've seen him play this song in person, and he uses a flat pick
but what does it matter its an awesome song, and it doesnt matter what kind of pick you use, thumb , flat or none.. its just how you play it
i personally prefer to play this with no pick

and is it called keep it simple because he makes it look easy (even though it will be hard to play)?
