  • hehe... im barely 15 and can play this clean ^^

  • is there a moth next to the mic?

  • the melody somehow resembles his song angelina... nonetheless still beautiful as it could ever be :)

  • oh heaven is a place on earth.

  • Is it just me, or does the melody sound like Belinda Carlisle's 'Heaven Is a Place on Earth'?

Go listen and it's almost exactly the same.

  • @presidentflush

not really, no. its nowhere near similar.

  • @presidentflush about one note sounds the same.

  • @Hadleton Fuck off

  • YOU CAN USE MY BAGEL PHONE BABE.

  • @kolvelive Aw that's so sweet.

  • as a guitarist i find its a pretty simple song, but the composition is very beautiful, and of course with tommy's flair it comes alive

  • M to the A to the G to the I to the C, that Tommy.

  • simply beautyfull,..

I love this i always get a special feeling from his music i can't explain it. I call it Tommy's magic.

  • keep it simple my ass! awesome song. listen to joe's Its Not Easy, at least the title is true fir that

  • @RaptorJMR haha I know

that guy is insane as well ! lol

  • this video is so claming :3

  • 1 in all the world!

  • 1 in a million.

  • @IIIISolidSnakeIIII The one and only.

  • @IIIISolidSnakeIIII

actually 1 in 6.000.000.000.000 more or less ^^

  • Oh, how great this song is!!! I watched this video, I think it's from the "Up close " DVD by Tommy and I think this DVD is the highlight of his artistic career. He seems so confident and warm on all of his songs. Tommy opened me a whole new world of music and in this way changed my life forever.

  • i can play it but not half as clean as him, i think you have to be a guitarist to really appreciate. (no offense to you non guitarists) :P

  • agreed you gotta realize that this guy is playing a walking bass line, basically rhythm guitar, and he's noodling with solos and arpeggios all at the same time

    its really amazing

  • @huix107 wow you can play almost half as clear as him? That would make you the second best player in the world!

  • @huix107 Yes, that's his strength - the both the diction and rhythm is always excellent. There's rarely any unclean notes. If anything is a weak spot, I will very meekly point out the phrasing and dynamics are often not quite what they should be. Each phrase is kind of monotone and the ebb & flow is a little timid. The melody line is often no where near as pronounced as it should be. All that said - he is a master.

  • @huix107 its cause its his song lol

  • wow.........

  • ti adoro

  • just learning this song right now.. not that simple actually.

  • i rember learning this....... it was gruling, it will come though and once you do hav it, it rolls off your fingers lol

  • @IcantDunk you can say that again lol is tehre actually any easy tommy song lol

  • @IcantDunk its a metaphor for life, but i know what you mean ay ;)

  • This guy prooves that using the thumb can can be very functional and adds a frugile ability, sort of like " economy of movement" approach not to mention he shows how to incorporate pretty much every type of guitar technique under the sun.

I have learned alot about the "guitar" by watching this particular musician

    Johnny Guitar Carson

  • Hi

I can't agree with u more. i'm a big tommy fan i play the guitar myself but i'm looking for tips or tricks to train my thumb to get it started. Maybe u know what i should do.

    Thnx TE fan

  • hi

I've been learning classical guitar for over 6 years now but had been learning contemporary for 5-6 years before that. You were wondering about how to get your thumb moving- classical guitar is the way to go for that sort of training. It's pretty underestimated in what it can do when applying it to contemporary guitar. I've found classical training invaluable when technique and agility, especially when it comes to moving the thumb cos it trains the thumb to think for itself!

  • Hi

thnx for your tip, i have had classical guitar lessons myself for 5 year. But you dont learn fingerstyle playing with a thumbpick. I found a video from tommy emmanuel on youtube "boomchick" where he explains it very good so iam learning that now thnx.

  • crap sound - what a shame. Thx for posting though

  • how the..??

  • lol " huge plastic sidewards-growing fingernail" lol

its called a thumb pick :P

but no, he uses a flat pick.

    "huge plastic forwards-growing fingernail" :P

thats why if you watch the video, his thumb and forefinger remain together to hold the flat pick in place..

you made me laugh though haha :)

  • Hahahaha

    ;-)

  • It reminds me a lot of angelina.

  • Yea true

  • Just what I was thinking. :)

  • concede, flat pick. commenting now to tell you not to miss tommy at you tube "guitar at its most beautiful" site.

  • * on picks *

I am sure I have seen Tommy Emmanuel play an acoustic using both types of pick. I imagine he chooses the one that is most suited to what he wants to play.

  • yes, he uses both a fingerpick and a plectrum (hand pick). And he also uses no pick sometimes too. It all depends on the type of sound you are after. Warmer sounds come from no pick, whereas a pick tends to create a strong 'attack' on the notes, making them sound 'harsher'. It is like singing a 'la' sound for smoother, well connected phrases, and 'ta' sounds for more accentuated phrases.

  • Check out 00:17, there's no pick. He braces his index finger with his thumb and uses his index fingernail as a pick on the fast lead melodic lines.

    Tommy is a wonderful player!

  • Actually, look at 0:50 and you'll see he has a flat pick in his hand.

  • sorry, but i've seen him play this song in person, and he uses a flat pick

but what does it matter its an awesome song, and it doesnt matter what kind of pick you use, thumb , flat or none.. its just how you play it

i personally prefer to play this with no pick

  • Truly inspired, Tommy. When i first started watching your playing i wanted to give up even pretending to focus on my own guitar "style", but i've reconnected with the instrument that brings me such joy. Respect. Chops or what, eh?

  • Fucking brillianto!!

  • What's the idea with micing on the electric?

  • i love this song, can u email me the tap

i am not good at hearing, sorry

  • This is insane with a flat pick

  • beauty

  • ... Tommy! IS - Mozart at his highest state of composition before he died,... there is no other comparison in this world,.... if MOZART was alive today, he would have surely embraced Tommy as his most beloved smaller brother...

  • that is not a compliment to tommy. he is completely different, the only similarity is their passion for music.

  • tommy actually tells a lot of stories about being inspired by a lot of classical music, especially mozart's... so i think thats a huge compliment

  • inspiration is a lot different to a direct comparison.

  • and i like short shorts

  • i like to see my gf in them. im not particular to wearing them... BUT, if she liked me in them, i would haha

  • lol nice reply....should have said I'm not 'partial' to wearing them.....still good though lol

  • i think i was going to say im not particularly into them haha then thought of partial a little too late lol funny thing is, i usually read over my comments to make sure i make sense. i think that would probably get a 'd' hahaha

  • This is a great player , he truely expresses his heart with his guitar..he's just greatly inspiaring for all of us..if we can't play it or not , atleast you try ;)

Love his way of showing how we must enjoy our play and not allways try to be the best ;)

He just had a musical priviledge life , but also known his downsides.

Tnx Tommy , you 're a grand contribution to all music-lovers !

  • the eyes are closed because he´s feeling something when he play, something soulfull

    ( it´s hard to describe)

  • beautiful.

its not simple to play to me. He's just amazing, listen at the notes all ring. So smooth

  • His best song in my opinion! If it's about the notes I can even play it... but his feeling is unbelievable.. We aint worthy :D

  • Why does he show off that he can do it with his eyes closed? :(

and is it called keep it simple because he makes it look easy (even though it will be hard to play)?

    Fezz.

    xx

  • how many times have you watched a musician play an instrument. because your comment suggests this is your first. try to think of one accomplished musician that doesnt play with their eyes closed at times. when you feel music deeply, it kind of naturally happens... you fall into it inadvertently.

  • he's not keeping it THAT simple. :)

  • its so so good it actually physically hurts..

  • this sounds like a norah jones song w/o her voice.

  • 美しい。一度でいいから生演奏を聞いてみたい。。。

  • Lol, that's messed up

  • I'm not worthy

    I'm not worthy

    I'm not worthy

Tommy always leaves me with my jaw on the floor

  • this song is like his song angelina.

    it's really amazing

  • i love this man all his songs are so lush how are they ALL so fuckin good its not human and you can tell every time he plays he gets lost in the music fuck!

  • go get me a tissue now....

  • song is amazing

  • i just finished, check mine out. grueling work, that was.

  • reminded me of his other song angelina

  • i wonder if he is using a thumb pick...great song though

  • No just a simple pick. Simple melody bur really nice !!!

  • mate its a flatpick simple pick could mean anything

  • Simple my arse! awesome song though :P

  • it is quite simple when you get to know it

  • i hope so im trying to learn it now!!!!! and im finding quite tricky but i remember struggling alot more with angelina just got 2 keep my head down now lol

  • it's great...
