  • Man what a voice. Piano could have been better.

  • his singing is heaven, exquisite! but, piano sound n dynamic is hell... Heaven n Hell

  • the high notes are soooo beautiful. one of the best countertenors !

  • The sound of a male voice singing in that register is so haunting and beautiful. Probably one of the best renditions of this song I have heard.

  • With his funky hairdo, I was instantly prepared to dislike him. Then he opened his mouth. Oh, my God! This is absolutely everything that singing should be. I am a fan for life.

  • david what a truly wonderful voice I AM A FAN ALREADYSUMMER MAGENT

    He sang in Semele

He was fabulous and that was 10 years ago

    you still sound so wonderful

I really liked what you did with this song

    Bravo to you

  • Where do I find the sheet music for this arrangement! Please help!!!!!!

  • OMG, you just made me cry!! It is so incredibly amazing the way you perform this awsome Ave Maria, your timbre is so rich, I would think of an alt instead of a countertenor if I close my eyes. Brilliant! Thanks for bringing a piece of heaven to us!

  • i am in love david.......

  • I thought that Slava Kagan-Paley had the most beautiful voice...I'm not so sure now.

  • beautiful voice as a woman....il castrati I asking.....higher tenor

  • Beautiful voice. His lower range is also outstanding.

  • this is great but i like Vitas version better, because it follows the traditional melody

  • @eyepatchinc vitas is masturbation for real countertenors

  • @Guichotpresident fail... you are quite mistaken

  • @eyepatchinc dude! The one vitas sings is schubert's... A bit of research before you compare real countertenors and musicians to that commercial masturbation?

  • @Guichotpresident lets try this again (my original comment didn't post) ...i don't need to do research to know which version/singer i like, not do i even care who wrote the traditional melody. in fact, i never claimed to know who wrote it. i just know i like it a lot better than this garbage. don't get me wrong, this guy also has a great voice, but this melody blows. & seriously man, get over it - i'm entitled to my opinion. lastly, just cause vitas is popular, doesn't mean he can't sing.

  • @eyepatchinc dude... THERE IS NO TRADITIONAL MELODY!!!! Ther are different versions of ave maria. That you don't like the melody is understandable, that's a question of taste. But PLEASE don't compare vitas to real countertenors! I didn't say Vitas was popular, by the way, I just said that his music was unoriginal and commercial (=made in the sole goal of making money and not touching people). If you like vitas, fine. But don't come on real countertenors' videos and comment that Vitas is better

  • @Guichotpresident i shall post comments anywhere i wish. you know damn well what the traditional melody is. its the one everyone knows and sings. the one you hear in church & on the radio. why? because its the TRADITIONAL MELODY get over it.

you have a job right? you make $ right? it just happens that vitas makes more than you & he does it with singing. it doesnt mean he's not a "real" countertenor. people buy his music, because it DOES touch them. quit playing dumb & quit being an elitist

  • @eyepatchinc Check out ave maria on wikipedia, it'll broaden your little view on things ;) It's great that Vitas makes lots of money i'm really happy for him! Maybe I looked a bit elitist, it's true. But his version of SCHUBERT's Ave Maria (it is NOT the "traditional" melody for god's sake!!!) just doesn't compare with the TRADITIONAL singing of it.

  • @eyepatchinc and there is no traditional ave maria melody, there are different ave marias, that's all. I don't think vitas sings caccini's.

  • Ein warmes Timbre,viel Gefühl,unglaubliches piano-ein sehr talentierter Künstler!!!

  • I like his voice, but if this is what I have to look forward to as a countertenor, I think I'd just rather get a sex change...... :(

  • vitas is better

  • Well i think its safe to say that gave me goose bumps

  • OMG, another ridiculous asian going blond, and he sings like a weeping woman who just lost a child, rather than paying tribute to the virgin Mary. I swear he looks like the broth preparer at my local noodle restaurant.

  • It sounds like he was inspired by Sumi Jo like Jackie Evancho was inspired by Sarah Brightmore i think i spelled it wrong...

  • @ChrstinaTheArtist Brightman? lol the girl who was Christine is The Phantom of The Opera?

  • I don't normally enjoy the countertenor voice, but dude. I could stand to listen to a few more hours of that.

Thank you, Korea. Keep those sweet-voiced classical singers coming, pls.

  • sung with such a complete control and ease!

  • Marvelous!

  • So beautiful & expressive singing! It was so thrilling that I even stopped breathing! Wonderful!

  • Meraviglosa, splendida.

    Bravissimo David Lee

  • ich kann der tag und nacht höhren...hundert mal...ich mag ich sehr!!!!!!!

  • WOW.....WONDERFUL....I agree with zutalOrs

  • Aahhh! The rare and beautiful voice of the counter-tenor. So serene, so melodiously performed with the grace and dignity of a true virtuoso. I loved every note!

  • Шикарно!!!

  • Alright. I do not have the right words to say what I feel when I hear this guy render Caccini's Ave Maria. No one precise adjetive comes to mind.

  • der ist ein supertalent!!!!!!!

  • ez a hang mindig megindit!!!!!!!!

  • I'm touched. This performance had me in tears. Tears! What the fuck is that?

  • Sehr gut ! ausgesprochen musikalisch !

  • Thank you for your kind comment. It is so vey sad that people who have no appreciation of genius, brilliance and sheer beauty, not to mention commitment, waste their time, and disgust the rest of us with their unpleasant, abusive (and here, rcaist) comments.

  • @abowden239

Is that your usual reaction to anyone that is, quite obviously, so much more talented than you could ever hope to be, even in your wildest fantasies? Nobody wishes to read your filth, or your craven racism.

  • @abowden239 What a sad creature you are.

  • @wonbad dickhead

  • best of the best

  • lol fucking amazing.

  • i can't fathom him, he's mind boggling, simply beautiful

  • Les larmes nous viennent aux yeux lorsqu il chante que dire d'autre....

  • ...

    The best Ave-Maria --- Okulova !!!

  • whoa thats amazin!

  • I 'd wish they had already discovered in the seventeenth century, what a countertenor is capable of, so they wouldn't

have to castrate little boys to make neuterised male mezzo-sopranos out of them...

  • @Jimis1821

shit - for - brains nazi nincompoop !

  • @theo9952 but its said, that there is a difference between the voices of castrate singers than in countertenors... ;-) sure countertenors are damn good but i think castrated singers sound different ;-)

  • @todesbote Well, they say that castrato tenors didn't use ''faltsetto'' vocal techniques that counter-tenors use. But how different their voices could they be ? They still had human vocal cords and there are also several singers with natural high-pitched voices and don't forget the sopranists ! BTW have you heard recordings of the ''last castrato'' Morecshi ? They are very low-fi of course but still one can tell that he was not so good.

  • @todesbote

I pressume that you must have heard the sopranist Aris Christofelis... I don't think that a castrato singer could do better that.

  • It's Vavilov. Caccini has nothing to do with this masterpiece.

  • Vavilov? What is that mean?

  • It's a russian composer who wrote this version of Ave Maria. Not Caccini.

  • Oh-! it seems to be really interesting fact that if your comment statement is true-! You mean this version is actually revised by a russian composer Vavilov as getting from the original Caccini? Could you inform for everyone as briefing an authentic sources about it?

    Thanks!

  • "Ave Maria" is a popular and much recorded aria composed by Vladimir Vavilov around 1970. It is a musical hoax generally misattributed to Baroque composer Giulio Caccini. Vavilov himself published and recorded it on the Melodiya label with the ascription to "Anonymous" in 1972.

  • It is believed that the work received its ascription to Giulio Caccini after Vavilov's death, by an organist Mark Shakhin (one of its performers on the mentioned "Melodiya" longplay), who gave the "newly discovered scores" to other musicians; then in an arrangement made by the organist Oleg Yanchenko for the recording by Irina Arkhipova in 1987; then the piece become be famous worldwide.

  • Wow---! Many thanks for your detailed explications about Vavilov's story---!!

  • @unitim, can you give the source please? Thanks.

  • Very talented! Making beautiful music. Keep up the good work.

  • Please, people! Do not be that obtuse! Listen and enjoy! This interpretation is technically (almost) perfect but, above all, is delicious! Congratulations to the singer!

  • Very well!

  • what an insensitive piano!

  • BRAVO! Very good technic, beautiful voice and outstanding musicality: you are a very talented singer!

  • He didn't miss any high notes, the high notes are probably at piano or pianissimo

  • He left out the high notes :(

  • very interested in your opinion. is he singing it in the right intonation? but you are saying that he skipped the high notes? interesting....

  • @dcbeyam I'm not sure if I would consider intonation the problem. But around 1:55 in this video he goes down instead of where most singers go higher (bocelli, westenra, sumi jo)

Anyway, in my opinion he probably is just in a more falsetto-y vocal cord function then his tone would lead to believe. And like any professional he works around it well.

    :)

  • Amazing

  • How sensitive and spirtual, thank you.

  • Beautiful!

  • Brilliant...thanks for posting.

  • Wow! I love how some of the great sopranos sing this song, but there is something quite haunting about the voice of a great countertenor.

  • I LOVE how he sings it with such ease. He is not straining to hit the notes, he is not pulling the notes out of this throat. He is just in his comfort zone, and letting it just come out naturally....Just blows me away everytime I hear this.

  • sorry, I pressed the wrong thumb... I meant to click on the thumb up icon. =)

  • I've seen him in concert and he's marvelous.

  • "This Piece is Peace"

  • oh man!

  • Just beautiful...he sings with such passion, clarity and ease...

  • A voice of great beauty, control and honeyed richness. None of the horrid nasal timbre and quality of so many countertenors! Bravo!

  • i wanted to sing this falsetto but.....idk.

  • Bravo David DQ Lee!

  • That's a smooth falsetto

  • His and Sumi Jo's versions are my favorite!!!

  • Amazing! Without words.

    Dreaming and dreaming........So Beautiful

  • it must have taken forever to memorize the lyrics

  • This is amazing , beautiful song and best performing by David DQ Lee. BRAVO !

  • It's great but I don't like his pianos, I listen like a small noise back.

But ok thanks for recording this.

  • bravo!!!!

  • simply amazing

  • what a beautiful interpetation!!!

  • A voice of such incomparable richness and mellifluous beauty. There are dozens of countertenors today, perhaps even more: only the very tiniest handful are capable of such purity and warmth of tone. David has none of that unpleasant nasal timbre or pushed notes at the top of his tessitura.

He is becoming better known but deserves world recognition!

  • @zimnaya couldnt agree more

the abuse posts on here are nonsensical.

  • Exceptionally beautiful upper register.

  • BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO

  • wow if greg pritchard on britain got tallent 09 sang like this he would of won

  • Because of the timbre and technique of this singer, this selection may have been a good choice: the fullness of his voice (as opposed to a more white voice) and less demand for technical agility and precision in this composition than in most Baroque vocal works. I would be curious how he handles very demanding arias (as an example, Andreas Scholl's "Mitridate", posted on YouTube.)

  • Amazing!!!!!!!!

  • I wonder if Andreas Scholl ever sung this? ... would be amazing! ... but as for David - very very nice. Need a bit more focusing though ... but great anyway :)

  • musical... good control... i like it

  • a countertenor must really have to take care of his voice more than any class of singer.

  • Muuuiiittoooo bom !!!!!

    Excelente !!!!!

  • does anyone have an mp3 of this?

  • Excelente...

  • great! i cant believe that i can match him....but my voice gets dry so fast that i crack at the last notes :(

  • David DQ Lee is fast establishing an enviable reputation among countertenors of his generation as mentioned by Elissa Poole in the Globe and Mail, With a powerful instrument and high As to rival any mezzos, reinterprets the same kind of voice as something voluptuous and exotic. An award winner of numerous international competitions.

  • Well you are very lucky then! I am a countertenor and I don't think it's easy! I'd like to hear you!

  • shh

  • ???

  • I don't think you can put as much musical dynamics and intonation as Lee can. Lee also has a wonderfully full falsetto.

  • You don't know what you're talking about! "It's so easy?". Why isn't every male a countertenor then? To sing with such durability and breath control, a lot of training is required! Because so much breath is taken from the diaphragm it is hard to sustain! And it is very hard to develop good dictation.

  • singing very high ca ruin an aria ... What jg060291 said was that u need very hard work to sound good and of course u also have to be talented. its easy to get to the notes that Lee sings in this video but its hard to sing them with grace and control that can sound good and not artificial to other peoples hears specially with a male falsete ...

  • and btw I can also sing along some arias sang by Callas but i can never think i can sound as good as her ... I never listen to a countertenor that match a coloratura soprano ... i don't think thats possible

  • a countertenor can almost never match a true soprano simply because the male vocal cords is different anatomically to that a a female !!!

  • i cant stand when people listen to themselves next to a recording of a professional singing. sit down with a tape recorder and sing queen of the night in saprano and then come back and tell me your voice is close to joan , natalie and maria.....

  • I do have a tape recorder (very old school Sony tape recorder), I do record myself, and I said closer... not close.

  • Just Beautiful.......

  • I just found out I am a countertenor!Im 16

  • I've listened this song by him in real, and must say: it was touching!

  • I was completely shocked and amazed by HIM~~ so beautiful and so touching !!!

  • because he's a professional countertenor....kid

  • There isn't anything unnatural about it. He is an extremely skilled countertenor...oh, btw...he sang as baritone for many years as well, he has quite the range.

  • ur a lower vocal type hunn!!

  • Well yes I know, and now I know this man is normal lol :P. I always thought there should be a bassline in a male voice...but lol, he can probably speak with a bassline but whatever man, it's not my business anyway :)

  • I can't get over his beautiful tone. I've watched over and over.

  • ..and very beautiful!

  • This is impressive!

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • Him: Simply Beautiful...Gorgeous Voice...

    Me: Fetal position...sobbing...

  • 1:54 Should he have taken a breath here? It seemed a little out of place.

  • Before people start flaming my post, I should clarify that no, I could not do any better.

  • No flame here...but I agree....must have been just a lung fart so to speak...

    Overall....beautiful!!

  • Absolutely beautiful! Had me in tears!

  • this makes me almost sad... utterly beautiful...

thank you for the beautiful singing...
