This song really sends me chills up the spin. I don't understand the Italian version, but the French version make it even sadder than tar&cement because she never wanted to leave. I made a try at an English translation, probably not perfect, but I believe it succeeds at conveying most of the feeling of the lyrics.

@skully1954 NO, this is not a version of Tar and Cement. The original is Italian, by Italian composer/singer Adriano Celentano. Both Francoise Hardy's French version and Verdell Smith's Tar and Cement are versions of that Italian original. So the original credit goes to the Italian, NOT to the English.

@aldrickbarber35 That s great seeing US people finding out aout French singers. I really think we have a different style; it s really a lot about the lyrics here, they move you. In fact, Hardy is a singer kind of made up at the time by French producers who were trying to bring rock and roll in France. So it s not typical French style. We call it "les années yéyé"; it this time when Young people kind of wanted to feel the US culture but with a French touch...

@pmolik1029 Remarques intéressantes. Mais je préciserais: d'abord, la présente chanson est d'origine italienne (Celentano) donc ni française ni américaine. Par ailleurs, F. Hardy a composé elle-même le texte d'un bon nombre de ses chansons, et même la mélodie pour plusieurs, et pas du tout dans un style Rock&Roll. L'influence américaine chez F.H. est plutôt minimale, si on la compare à ce qui se fait aujourd'hui. Elle est un emblême de la vraie chanson française des années 60-70

J ai grossi le trait et pas fais dans le détail parce qu on s adresse à un Américain qui ne connait probablement pas les bases de l'histoire de la chanson française des années 60. L'influence rock chez FH, indéniable selon moi, n'est pas dans la musique elle même mais dans le mode de production, de diffusion et dans l'image de la chanteuse chez les jeunes à l'époque, avec évidemment la distance qui existe entre culture française et US.

My American roots, as far as I know are of English and Irish. Not very sure about French. And, Jean-Luc is an alias I use in French class. Par example, mon ami Mike, en français, il s'appelle Marc. Something like that.
