If she got disqualified, why did we see scores at the end? I think she just got a deduction, which is still dumb. The back-flip was made illegal in the first place because the skater can't land on two blades, which obviously doesn't apply here.

If I'm not mistaken, she is still considered the only figure skater in the world to accomplish the one-bladed backflip...unless there was maybe one other person, but as far as I know, that's a strict Surya move...and one hell of a protest move at this competition...she even finished wth her back to the judges since that backflip was for the crowd. Way to go Surya!

Ah yes.....I've seen another skater do a double bladed simple backflip, but I'd never known of anyone besides Surya to successfully land a one-bladed backflip...Thanks for confirming. I often wonder if anyone else will make this move part of their repertoire, but in all honesty... I'm thrilled that the move BELONGS to Surya and no one has been able to accomplish the feat. Simply amazing athleticism to pull it off repeatedly.

The "insane backflip" was done *because* of the fall. It is a disallowed move, and as such to do it would result in disqualification.

She would not have done it, but because of the fall she would have no chance of a medal, and she knew this of course, so she decided to just do the forbidden move.

Apparently there's an actual risk of her killing herself if she fucked up doing that (and landed on her head for example) which is why it's banned.

very nice how she handled the fall, that's all part of the presentation. I saw a vid of her before, and her jumps were amazing, but her regular skating was nothing special. much better here! lovely.
