I've been a bridesmaid 4 or 5 times and it was not really a soul sucking experience. I was glad to be a part of my friends day and enjoyed the partying. I don't get all the negativity surrounding this issue.
Just finished the book. picked it up on a whim one day and felt totally comforted by the fact that other girls have been kicked out of the coveted role of bridesmaid. I recently was kicked out of the bridal party for my brothers wedding, 2 days before the wedding actually. and this book in a strange way helped me with my anger and hurt over the unceremonious dumping i received by my new sister in law. Great book, no truer tale of horror has ever been told.
I do agree that the joke was pretty tasteless. Jokes like that may fly in person (not likely though) but they don't on the internet when you can't hear the laugh or see their face.
I don't understand why you'd ever agree to be a woman's bridesmaid if you have some kind of philosophical opposition to the role of bridesmaids. And yeah, it's definitely no shock that this woman has never been married and therefore only has a limited idea of the amount of planning that goes into a wedding. If she'd ever been a bride, she'd realize the pressure of being a bride and how important it is to have support from friends when you're in that situation.
On the other hand, Brides, you should also be respectful of your friends who are close enough to you to be in your wedding, & you should try and avoid ordering people around & expecting more than a bridesmaid could possibly give. (Don't choose a $300 bridesmaid dress for a girl who's already on a tight budget, unless you are willing to pay for some ,& don't expect a BM with 3 children to plan & attend more than 1 shower)
I see this all the time.(Work in a Bridal Store) In my opinion: If you agree to be a BM, you know full well what the process entails.(Possible ugly dress, stressed out bride, predictable and boring showers, etc)If you don't want to be a part of these things, then back down.
haha well at last you got to watch your best friends wedding, my best friend let her fionce` uninvite me as maid of honor on the grounds i couldn't afford my dress straight away and that i wasn't christian enough. i quote "your only there for her when you need her and when she needs you, never inbetween" like what the? Turns ou his sisters got in the bridal party, whom she has met twice! Now she wants to talk to me! ha! Wedding bring out ppl's true colors, its the true test of friendship.
The 'I give it six months comment" was inappropriate. About as classy as when my brothers father in law offered him $50 to walk away in the court house in front of the JP. Meant as a joke but tasteless.
she's right, too many girls freak out at thier weddings, and the weddings themselves revolve around some fairytale control bullshit than an intimate celebration of love and union.
Listen, tradition isn't for everyone, but if she had a problem with this she should have said so from the beginning. Was she unclear on what being a bridesmaid entails? Come on- no one forced her to say yes. This woman is incredibly rude and needs to learn to hold her tongue. How could she think it would be funny to say "I give it six months!" Let her do whatever she wants IF she ever gets married! Until then, just say "no" or forever hold your peace!
I got married 2 years ago... and this women is absolutely right... you know what fuck being politically correct.. just like Christmas... weddings lost there meaning a long time ago... moral breakdown... Long live this women!
This lady needs to watch Bridezilla and get a sensitive sense of humor regarding other people's feelings. Maybe she's jealous or something, but her comments are totally inappropriate. If she was going to write this article, she could have waited until *after* the wedding.

Also, why do you do it? You do it because you care, and so that those people will be there for you when you need their support.

Good to see a woman honest about the bullshit and false ideology that lies behind marriage.
Marriage is a played out institution maintained mostly by the phony and traditionalist idiots that placate this tired contract.

Funny... I thought you were romantic?!?!?
Marriage can't be so bad. Its the wedding that is cliche and seemingly phony. I could do without the hearts and doves. Just sayin'
