They're caused by the front wheel and back wheel becoming misaligned, so I'd say you made a pretty good diagnosis. As long as you didn't hurt your self or anyone else, it is a good recovery in my book.
F-ing hondas man, I used to get tank slapper regularly when I had hondas. The fronts are just too quick... From my 600"s to my 1000's same thing. Once I went to Yamaha and Suzuki, tank slappers where a thing of the past. I would never ride a honda with out a damper..
Ok so I own a 2005 zx-10 which is notorious for tank slappers and as I understood they happen because the front end gets too light. So what I always do is let the throttle slam shut to get the weight on the front tire and slide forward on the seat so if you spoke with knowledgable riders are they suggesting that you don't slide forward if I understand correctly? Or else maybe I'm thinking of a speed wobble from accelerating
Even if you "know" you're gonna bite the dust, try to relax. For gods sake, relax and let the bike sort itself out.
The bike is very good at stabalizing itself, it doesn't need the rider to try and hold the bars still. In fact, doing so can disturb the bike, making the tank slapper even worse.
There's no guarantees that you'll save it even IF relaxing during a slapper, but it's hellova lot better then stiffening up. =)
I used to get head shake like this when I was moto-crossing sometimes. Scares the hell out of you and basically you are just along for the ride. Nice save man.
I had my first tank slapper at the track last weekend. It wasn't nearly as bad as yours, but still plenty fucking scary. I managed to keep it on two wheels, so I was happy.
Same happend to me on my yamaha yz 125, doing about 55 - 60 offraod and a tank slapper worse than that i still don't know how i saved it. Fkin scary shit man. Good save btw
hi there mate i dont want to tell you how to ride but ive found if you dab the back brake when the slapper starts it sits the front end back down i allways ride with my foot over the brake so if this happens a quick dab sorts it out without having to shut off give it a try .
first time watching the situation you got yourself into with the grass i thought, 'shit this is a bad situation, one wrong move and you're going down then your babys going to get herself beat up meaning weeks of work and feelings of regret.
you know how you rewatch movies sometimes, and you know the protagonist is going to lose the next fight, yet you find yourself hoping for a miricle win anyway?
well that just happened- and you just won man. that was kickass
@destined2sleep This is one of the problem with literbikes... when the revs drop from a shift, you're right back in the meat of the powerband (as it should be). However, because they have so damn much power this often leads to the front losing interest in the pavement. The front being "light" is another way of saying "small wheelie" ;)
@needknees i think i understand. So the front wheel being lighter, barely touching the tarmac, coupled with the ruts/uneven surface u mentioned caused the tank slapper? It makes sense
@destined2sleep exactly. Although that was one of the contributors to the slapper, the #1 cause was me not being light enough on the bars. Had I been more loose on the bike there's a good chance of a few hard shakes then it'd work itself out.
@needknees Isn't that so that short uncontinuence on grip of front wheel, and regaining that grip so, that some other than middle section of tire gains the grip first? When kid you all propably have put old tire, taken out of rim, to roll down a steep hill. Most usually it starts wobbling after jumping and so on... Completely same phenomenan.
@needknees Well said needknees. I just watched onthethrottle segment where Dave talks about the contributing factors of head shake. Like you said the timing was perfect for it to happen in your case; or in any other case for that matter. Glad you made it.
hooooooly shit. same thing happened to me today on my speed four. it was a bumpy back road and i was cornering around 70-80 and the front just hit a bump mid corner and bam. i thought i was going down for sure but i somehow saved it
Are you in Track Addix? I just got a Ninja, I need to put together all the gear I'll need, but I'd like to try out MPH or MAM sometime when I get the money.
I recommend Ohlins steering dampers.... had a simular but not so violent experience on my cb 1000r. Nice save by the way enough adrenaline for that day i say.
Right before the slapper starts you can hear ebgine doing - gre-gre-gre - bumps on the road. This is why it is started. I has two slappers myself on my zx-12r last saturday on very bumpy road while trying to overtake car. Managed to stop both withiut crashing. They are scary.
I have even worse tank slapper yesterday at the speed of 150mph(250km/h). I started to accelerate heavily on the straight road, the road was a little bit bumpy, all my body was moved backwards to hide from the wind under tiny r6 windshield. When I reached the maximum RPM at the gear 5, I loosen a throttle a little and a massive front wheel wobble started. I didn't accelerate, didn't break and I sat normally to slow down the bike with high speed wind hitting my chest. Somehow the shaking stopped.
The SAME thing happened to me today (except I was on the street and doing more like 50 or 60.) I was coming out of a slight turn, and shifted up under Heavy throttle. As soon as I shifted the bars started whacking violently back and forth for about 5 seconds. I let off the gas and it stopped(thankfully no cars!) but had no control during the slapper. I thought it might be my suspension settings but I think I agree w/ you: "cold" riding - not loose enough, shifting under hard throttle& turning
to the hater thats giving him advice on what he should have done? its all about saving your self and the bike which he clearly did. there are no rules here, you either save it or go face down.
Hats off to you, most people would blame it on the machine and buy a tight steering damper, you are improving your riding. A role model in some respects mate
Don't listen to the retards on here critiquing your riding. You rode that out like a champ. And you're spot on with your analysis, I just spent all of this past Saturday with speed wobbles on my Supermoto trying to figure out how to get around it (same spot on the track every time) We have a big hump in the middle of our back straight and it happens to be right at my shift point from 3-4th letting off the gas and hammering it after a shift was enough to lift the front and throw me for a ride.
apart from the tank slapper which happend ona straight when :p you went on the grass you pulled your clutch in quite early why thats a silly thing to do.
@MaGicMik3z I didn't clutch in on the grass till I got down to the corner worker's station. The drop in revs you heard was from the rear tire momentarily locking in the grass.
Hey needknees, Do you recall how full or empty the gas tank was ?
My guess is that the tank was very low on fuel. I have a RSV4 (Factory) and I have noticed that it is very sensitive to fuel load. I am sure this contributed to it. The heavier the fuel load, the less likely this will occur, Sounds like "junk Science" but I know first hand !
This was first thing in the day so the tank was topped off. Can't remember exactly how many laps in but it happened in the first session. Not sure how the RSV4's tank is situated but the CBR puts most of the weight under the seat.
WOW for one im surprised it even tankslapped with that stabilizer & two that was one great save,i;ved had some tankslappers my self & i know how tuff they r 2 save but you were in the dirt still tankslappin & saved it ,you got some skill playboy well done!
I used to get tank slappers on my CBR, then I learned not to grip the bars tight, it stops the front wheel from going where it needs to go and in turn gets kicked about, then forms a tankslapper.
I thought you were about to eat shit for sure. Bet your eyes opened up as big as bowling balls. Nice save. If I were a ref id give it a 10/10. Sadly I am not so all I can do is a thumbs up!
Dude NICE recovery!!! Ya, your stock damper isn't enough for that kinda of action, if your riding track you really need to upgrade. Also the main cause of a slapper on the straight like that was cause by pressure on the bars. try hanging on to the bike using your feet and legs instead of your arm. you want virtually no pressure on the bars under acceleration or braking. Great job holding on to it in the grass and sweet bike too!
YEAH go the GoPro HD! Love those little cameras, I have one myself :) epic tank slapper dude. Im thinking of getting a dampener when I upgrade from my CBR250RR to an 08 R6
@kennopoo A bit over 100. The slapper started at the 2-3 shift which is approximately ~130mph. From what I can see of the taped off speedo in the video it's still in triple digits when I hit the grass.
Accelerating out of that corner. Maybe just a little to firm on the counter steer. Advice for getting out of a tank slapper used to be to let go of the handle bars. It worked for me once.
Hit road kill at 50+ threw me in a tank slapper didn't recover bike slid 347 feet I rolled a good part of that .got up talked to police and bystanders pushed it home two blocks down the road .bumps and bruises and new out look on life.
That was scary to watch! I had one just like it yesterday on my brothers cbr 600 while chasing an Audi r8, I beet the Audi but needed a new pear of pants when I got home!
that grass area is what saved your bike and got that slapper under control.. as the front wheel couldn't move side to side so freely... close call either way
Lucky man. My high speed slapper resulted in me going airborn, tumbling down the highway, with missing skin, crushed hand, and a fear to hop back on the saddle. bike was totaled. My tank slapper could have been the result of bad suspension settings, bad fork work, gew leak stopper in the rear tire, slack chain, worn bearing, cheap tire, etc. My lesson was stop being cheap on the maintenance. The $5000 in medical bills wasn't worth the money saved by keeping my bike maintained.
MAM has one of the worst run off areas of a track that I have been to. Needless to say I went down because of the bumps. Not going back there unless I am paid to go.
I'd blame the surface at MAM... I had a pretty sweet tank slapper coming out of 5. Of course it coulda been that I was full bore on my R1 coming out of a turn :)
Maybe its another problem, like head bearing failure or a faulty front tire. I have a stock r1 with factory damper and have never experienced that much shake.
@EmoSurfer1982 They do have a stock damper, but it's electric. It's supposed to automatically stiffen up at speed and be looser at low speeds, but I don't think they're really designed for the track. ...If it's working at all, that is. I'm thinking it's more a combination of track surface and geometry that caused the tankslapper than anything.
@needknees damn that nuts ..thats like yamaha's fly by wire throttle... it seems cool but what if it fails on u .... like this did...i mean I get chatter wot going up a hill on certain courses but that is nuts in a straightway
@agg2001 haha I'm looking at them. There really isn't much out there for the current gen CBR1000 though! Neither Scotts or Ohlins makes one yet :(. GPR is about the only one I found, and I've heard conflicting reports on them. Sounds like their seals blow out pretty quick.
@needknees - yea, the first few batches of the v.4 GPR had faulty seals from their supplier. since then, they've changed suppliers and i haven't had a single problem with mine - nor any of my friends have - in nearly 12 months. AND, if it should ever start leaking - EVER - they'll fix it for free (9 times outta 10 it's simply replaced with a new one directly from GPR... not old dealer stock).
@needknees Don't just cover up the problem with a damper. Figure out what actually caused it first, THEN use a damper if you want the extra piece of mind. Have you altered the steering geometry at all? Had the suspension set up?
There was a problem with one particular run of the GPR's, which was fixed. I'd say it's a safe bet if you get a new one. I've had no trouble with mine.
Get the GPR. They've gotten a new seal for it. Even if the one you buy doesn't come with the new seal and develops a leak, it's only $35 for a seal & service. So don't let those leaky seals deter you!
Damn good job on the save. I would have changed my drawers after that.

I'd blame the surface at MAM... I had a pretty sweet tank slapper coming out of 5. Of course it coulda been that I was full bore on my R1 coming out of a turn :)

great save, pulled over to change underwear? :)
redhot916spd 1 year ago
Maybe its another problem, like head bearing failure or a faulty front tire. I have a stock r1 with factory damper and have never experienced that much shake.
psychocycledad 1 year ago
It seems that you squeezed the handle bar, bike don't lyke that ;)

thats sad even a OEM damper shouldn't respond like that but i don't think honda's come with stock damper...cause yamaha is the same way
EmoSurfer1982 1 year ago
@EmoSurfer1982 They do have a stock damper, but it's electric. It's supposed to automatically stiffen up at speed and be looser at low speeds, but I don't think they're really designed for the track. ...If it's working at all, that is. I'm thinking it's more a combination of track surface and geometry that caused the tankslapper than anything.
needknees 1 year ago
@needknees damn that nuts ..thats like yamaha's fly by wire throttle... it seems cool but what if it fails on u .... like this did...i mean I get chatter wot going up a hill on certain courses but that is nuts in a straightway
EmoSurfer1982 1 year ago
bet you have an aftermarket damper now, huh? ouch... nice save... and VERY NICE offroad skills. dodging the mud was impressive.
agg2001 1 year ago
@agg2001 haha I'm looking at them. There really isn't much out there for the current gen CBR1000 though! Neither Scotts or Ohlins makes one yet :(. GPR is about the only one I found, and I've heard conflicting reports on them. Sounds like their seals blow out pretty quick.
needknees 1 year ago
@needknees - yea, the first few batches of the v.4 GPR had faulty seals from their supplier. since then, they've changed suppliers and i haven't had a single problem with mine - nor any of my friends have - in nearly 12 months. AND, if it should ever start leaking - EVER - they'll fix it for free (9 times outta 10 it's simply replaced with a new one directly from GPR... not old dealer stock).
just sayin'. :)
agg2001 1 year ago
@needknees Don't just cover up the problem with a damper. Figure out what actually caused it first, THEN use a damper if you want the extra piece of mind. Have you altered the steering geometry at all? Had the suspension set up?
crash86ed 1 year ago
@needknees
There was a problem with one particular run of the GPR's, which was fixed. I'd say it's a safe bet if you get a new one. I've had no trouble with mine.
crash86ed 1 year ago
@needknees With certain models. Do some research. I have one on my sv and I've yet to have any problems with it.
crash86ed 1 year ago
@needknees
Get the GPR. They've gotten a new seal for it. Even if the one you buy doesn't come with the new seal and develops a leak, it's only $35 for a seal & service. So don't let those leaky seals deter you!
