All of these guys would have been excellent soldiers. What a waste. However when all of this stuff was going on, it rarely was to the death, more of just wounded. However if somebody was accidentally wounded beyond repair they had an executioner that would finish the job with a mace behind the scenes.
Lol cool but a lil over played eh? the end with the mace in the neck? wtf? lol and the head off with the sheild i mean rlly? lol anyways epic fight scene though!!!
I remember, fucking five years ago, watching this for the first time. I saw many many tv show in my life but at 4:42, I was on my feet, screaming, 13 forever! Best scene ever.
This is what friends are all about. This was the best!
@Elboy75 Romans were barbarians when they had to be and philosophers, scientist and architects also when they had to be. That's why they conquered everyone who opposed them and their cultural influence is still alive to this day be it in the form of law, architecture, art, etc.
Well, an ordinary legionnaire wouldn't stand a chance against gladiators in an arena fight. Legionnaires were trained to fight in formation with perfect discipline, but not single combat in open space. Gladiators, on the other hand, literally lived or died based on how well they fight one-on-one.
Unfortunately for these gladiators, Pullo and Vorenus are no ordinary legionnaires ;)
@setdan You raise an interesting point, But I would speculate that a Legionnare given his proper equipment like he would in the Army, would provide a suitable challenge for most gladiators. Legionnares were trained to fight defensively, hide behind the shield and stab outwards, and relied on superior armour to win in a One Versus One.
those gladiators should know not to fight a angry Roman legionaire, he will kick thier ass. stupid slaves disrespecting a citizen army. they should have been crucified.
The actors' regional British accents were used with effect to enhance the portrayal of the social distinctions of ancient Roman society; however after initial previews, some of the stronger accents were re-dubbed and toned down for American audiences.
@davehoward22 Because this series was produced by English. Why do you write "dunno, better then them speaking texan i s,pose" How about, "I don't know, but it's betten than them speaking Texan, I suppose"?
Yeah, JarlFrank from the Codex. Actually clicked the link to this video in the Codex thread about the AoD demo. So which Codexer are you or are you just a lurker?
Fitting end too, being a veteran gladiator he is given the role of finisher. Finishing off the wounded and condemned. Someone like him probably killed many this way.
Watch closely in the next episode, I swear you see that gladiator's dad. When they show the scene with the comedians acting out what happened, one man who looks just like the big gladiator is seen looking sadfully at the stage. It is quite a hidden, but powerful scene. I have no doubt it is either the same actor but with makeup on to look old, or just another actor meant to be the gladiator's dad.
Why could you see it happening with a shield if it has happened with a sword? I don't understand the logic. The swords which removed heads were those enormous two handed weapons.
As I said, it's actually very difficult to remove the head from the body. There were many cases where the guillotine, a device solely designed to chop open the neck, failed to cut through. The punishment had to be administered over and over again until successful.
This is Cronenberg style exaggerated Hollywood gore.
I clearly stated they could have sharpened the shield, and a massive man like Ray Stevenson would be a fitting candidate to do it.
And yes, the guillotine failed once in a while, but wasn't the sword made to hack people apart too? Yet it also failed to cut through on occasion. Still, with the proper velocity and movements by the attacker and opponent, I could see it happening and I think you could too.
Perhaps not in the way shown in this scene, but it's without a doubt possible.
And with all due respect, who are you to say which weapons couldn't do this in a battle? I hope you don't have experience beheading people, but it seems like you are going to great lengths to cut my balls off.
Also, you are wrong about your point that only two handed swords could chop through necks and bone. There are one handed swords able to cut through a neck in one swipe AND short two handed ones that are far from enormous.
Also the guillotine always did what it was meant to, execute.
- Even assuming it was a sharpened shield (no such indication), can you cite any examples from history where a shield like that is supposed to have sliced someone's head clean off their shoulders?
- The point about the guillotine is that a special device needed to be constructed for quick, 'humane' execution, because simply hacking away with axes or swords usually failed to cut away clean. Even then, the guillotine wasn't always successful on its first attempt.
- I don't believe I ever said all two handed weapons were enormous, nor did I say that they were the only things which could chop through necks...
- "Cutting off your balls"? Not even going to bother with such a silly comment. It's not like I attacked you at any point, and YOU replied to me to begin with. Who am I to know? Argue the facts, not the person.
>> Perhaps not in the way shown in this scene, but it's without a doubt possible.
Well, exactly. I was obviously talking about THIS scene, not something else that could just be conjured up in your imagination.
It's 'possible' to cut out a person's heart with a spoon - doesn't mean I'm not gonna laugh if something as improbable as that is presented on screen as realistic.
And you can't speak about me conjuring things up, you said it was impossible, it is not. There is no middle ground, now stop retreating on sections of your point. Either a shield cannot decapitate or it can. You said it can, and you are wrong. This scene is not a good example, of course it fucking isn't. In Rome, Titus Pullo has sex with Cleopatra, has her child, and is to blame for the war with Pompeii. Are you claiming that I'm using this as a historical reference? because I clearly am not.
Lastly, for I think we should agree to disagree or end this stupid, and needless argument, there was a case in Newfoundland in the 18/1900s where a murderer was hung from the gallows, and due to being weighed on a broken scale, ended up being beheaded when falling through the trap door. This is the same kind of proper velocity and weight I am talking about.
It was a freak incident, and I can give you a name if you wish to bitch me out about every last detail, but it has happened more than once.
"The swords which removed heads were those enormous two handed weapons."
Don't waste my time having to quote you, you said exactly that, as if other swords could not.
Cutting off my balls means trying to denounce what I'm saying or doing, and you are doing just that. I am not arguing "the person"(as unsensible as that is), I am arguing what you are saying. Falling unsharpened edges of glass have decapitated people, and no I'm not thinking of The Omen. So why is it impossible with metal?
And don't talk to me about arguing facts, after reading what you said on another video, I have officially declared your arguments null and void. Don't waste your time responding, because i don't care about what you have to say one bit...
"Women are ABLE to out crap on their face to look good - plain and ugly men just have to deal with being ugly. Women can park cars in one go too. Women use their strength more productively. Women let their emotions out - they don't fight."
Can you cite any examples from history where a shield has not cut someone's head off?
And you are saying some very expected, but ridiculous things.. No such indication that this shield was sharp? Uhh.. Did you just watch the same scene I did? I think the fact it chopped his head off is quite an indication...
I think you are trying a bit hard here, I am not saying this is possible in every situation, but with a 200 pound man falling onto a large tower shield around 50 pounds minimum, well..
I took about 10 minutes to write all of that, and see that retarded reply you sent to someone else(I prefer to know who I'm arguing with, even if briefly), so pity me all you want.
The saddest thing is; all you could respond with, after getting so severely shut down, was that pitiful response.
And I can guarantee, you wasted more time than me miss.
You are just one more annoying girl searching for something to bitch about, I feel rather sorry for you.
I hate to disappoint you, but the response I gave you had nothing to do with the fallacious arguments you made. It had everything to do with the same reaction anyone else who reads this exchange will feel - astonishment at the sheer antagonism and unnecessary vitriol in your remarks. All we were talking about was the realism of a TV show and a little bit of history. What exactly did I say to provoke such an aggressive, nasty reaction? Why have you made this personal?
By the way, the comment you PARTIALLY quoted here after following me around Youtube was a JOKEY reply to a JOKEY comment on a COMEDY video. I have to say, I found it downright creepy that you checked out all my recent comments before directing torrents of abuse (much of it deeply misogynistic) at the people you found in those videos too.
If you're willing to drop your bizarrely antagonistic and frankly stalkerish behaviour, I'll be perfectly happy to discuss the original point of history with you in a calm, rational manner.
Otherwise, I have no interest whatsoever in the the sort of embarrassingly childish bitchfests you appear to be seeking out with complete strangers. Sorry.
Sorry for coming off rudely, but you need to read some of your past comments if you think you have been respectful. Calling me stalker is pitiful.
And I'm childish? I have to deal with enough fakes in the real world. You have tried to "outwit" me using long words(which I understand, but really don't get why you're using them, surely you don't speak like that with friends?), when you aren't even on topic whatsoever.
When you have learned to speak as if we are both equal, then I will reply.
You were joking at the end. Not the beginning, and yeah, I'm stalking you, right.
Maybe I'm checking to make sure I'm not wasting my time, which I am.
You started acting bitchy, not me, and you are the one making fallacious bullshit up. What the hell would you know about decapitations and war? I partially quoted it, because I obviously didn't have room.
And as smart as you may feel using the words misogynistic and fallacious, many of your sentences are not making sense whatsoever.
No, no, no. You were speaking about this scenario, not the TV show. I know Rome is not historically accurate, I'm not an idiot. The TV show had nothing to do with this argument, you have shifted it to be about the TV show, because you simply don't know what you're talking about.
You deserve such a reaction, because you have replied 4 times implying I am just making shit up, when I am not. You have called me a liar, implied I'm an idiot, when you have proven yourself both.
Oh my god, haha! This is so gory that it's completely silly. And it's not like there is a lot of violence, it's just what little they have is to the maximum. Pretty cool. I didn't know this show had balls like that.
Loved the series, too bad their wasn't a third season. I liked how in the next ep, you see a play about this scene shown to the roman mob. The gladiator's face in the crowd was priceless.
Are you really so stupid ? Do you think they played chess to decide who to win the great battles ?
Let me tell you: In even battles the only chanse to win was to have heroes who could raiste the morale, It's known that Brutus (ceasars general) Killed over 20 enemys in one battle.
The actors' regional British accents were used with effect to enhance the portrayal of the social distinctions of ancient Roman society; however after initial previews, some of the stronger accents were re-dubbed and toned down for American audiences.
This sceen means so much to me. Because I've done something like this. This brave and selfless for a freind which I wouldn't do for anyone but when you know the real definition of freindship this is nothing.
awsome, i liked the last fight, when comodos sted him before the actual fight because he WAS scared of him, he knew he couldnt fight him alone. and then maximus owned him with a stab would and a slashed sholder. :) good always wins.
The second fight you refer to is the last fight in the film Gladiator (one of my favourite films), this clip is from the BBC series "Rome". The time difference in historical terms between the two is about two centuries- The series Rome is set arond the first century BC, the film Gladiator is set roughly in the middle of the second century AD.
Pulo! Pulo! Pulo! What a warrior. A Roman. I was was gonna be pissed to see him die in that sorted way after he bested 7 Gladiators, at one coming three at a time. But Vorenus changed. He gave up the centurion role for friendship, and because he wouldn't see a 13th legionary killed when out of breath and wounded. Can anyone think of analogies? Hoo Rah!!!
No. That's what makes this one so damn special! There's another really, really good fight scene that's as good as or better than this one (matter of opinion) later on towards the end of the series. But the show is awesome in so many other ways. Rated 9.3/10 on IMDb, so that gives you an idea of how good it is.
Is it the one from Televisionwithoutpity, the dark red one with 13 in roman letters? If it is something else, let me know, I'm intersted in getting it.
can't see it happen tbh, too many characters died, although they could always try a new era in rome with different characters if it could work that is
not really, although this is by far the most violent scene in the entire series. almost all the eps contains violence of some sort. like a friend of mine said, "all they do is feed, fight fuck, and drinking". but it has great characters and a really good story.
its not a movie its a T.V series on H.B.O. in series 1 there are 12 episodes. in series 2 there are only 10 episodes. if u go to the hbo website i hope ive helped

Speaking about the part with the sheild cutting his head off, I re-looked at the scene and there's one bit goof with it:
We clearly know which head Pullo chops at 1:38. However, when we pull back at 1:45, we see that the guy's head is now back one.
Very peculiar.

That shield beheading was pretty unrealistic. If it was that easy to remove people's heads, the guillotine would never have been invented.

Grungadin 3 years ago
You have called me a liar, implied I'm an idiot, when you have proven yourself both.

yah! lucius verinus and titus polo!
OptimisPrimeRib 3 years ago
Oh my god, haha! This is so gory that it's completely silly. And it's not like there is a lot of violence, it's just what little they have is to the maximum. Pretty cool. I didn't know this show had balls like that.

Loved the series, too bad their wasn't a third season. I liked how in the next ep, you see a play about this scene shown to the roman mob. The gladiator's face in the crowd was priceless.

No, your an idiot.
jonathan12376 3 years ago
Look at what you wrote: "rarely 1 person cant even kill 1 enemy", if this were the case people wouldnt often kill each other.
heyeverybodyshappy 3 years ago
Are you really so stupid ? Do you think they played chess to decide who to win the great battles ?
Let me tell you: In even battles the only chanse to win was to have heroes who could raiste the morale, It's known that Brutus (ceasars general) Killed over 20 enemys in one battle.
albertalbertsson 3 years ago
Brutus was a wimp, things like that are Roman propoganda.

Any worse than American?
AdmanFP 3 years ago 6
Good point there. I sure as hell don't mind British accents. I think they sound better actually. :P
000majorwinters000 3 years ago
The actors' regional British accents were used with effect to enhance the portrayal of the social distinctions of ancient Roman society; however after initial previews, some of the stronger accents were re-dubbed and toned down for American audiences.

This sceen means so much to me. Because I've done something like this. This brave and selfless for a freind which I wouldn't do for anyone but when you know the real definition of freindship this is nothing.

ever seen on TV or on film.
Absolutely awesome!

personally, i liked when he impaled the guy and swung him vertically. that took strength.
Buyah1 4 years ago
awsome, i liked the last fight, when comodos sted him before the actual fight because he WAS scared of him, he knew he couldnt fight him alone. and then maximus owned him with a stab would and a slashed sholder. :) good always wins.
lgnat 4 years ago
The second fight you refer to is the last fight in the film Gladiator (one of my favourite films), this clip is from the BBC series "Rome". The time difference in historical terms between the two is about two centuries- The series Rome is set arond the first century BC, the film Gladiator is set roughly in the middle of the second century AD.
They are both great fights though!!
victor300500 4 years ago
Pulo! Pulo! Hoo Rah!!!

is all episodes of rome like this ? :P
almyman 4 years ago
No. That's what makes this one so damn special! There's another really, really good fight scene that's as good as or better than this one (matter of opinion) later on towards the end of the series. But the show is awesome in so many other ways. Rated 9.3/10 on IMDb, so that gives you an idea of how good it is.
comikall 4 years ago
The fat one seems to like it when men suck his cock often :P

This is totally my fav scene from season 1. It made me cry lol. I love Pullo and Vorenus. <3
Imboredboredbored 4 years ago
This place way before the Coliseum and way before Gladiator(fictional).
Actually Roman Empire really is at is best around 200 AD. This was the greatest period in time for average straight men.
Now is the worst time for average straight men, especially in the U.S. where men are worth less than women.

can't see it happen tbh, too many characters died, although they could always try a new era in rome with different characters if it could work that is

this is undoubtly the coolest scene of the first season which i got for christmas.. made my week :)
2Jabs 4 years ago
Wow that show owns is it like that every episode ?
cacapipi0123 4 years ago
not really, although this is by far the most violent scene in the entire series. almost all the eps contains violence of some sort. like a friend of mine said, "all they do is feed, fight fuck, and drinking". but it has great characters and a really good story.
