  • So how does this compare to the 817?

  • What's your comparison between the FT-817 and IC-703? Dont see your comparison video either. In my vids I'm rocking QRP with a FT-817 but I am an ICOM man. How do you compare them?

  • Bob,

Really enjoyed the QRP video here! I have been thinking about QRP for sometime now, and I am convinced to try it! I have an IC706MK11G and I may turn the power down to 5 watts later and give it a shot on 20 meters. My dipole is an inverted vee with the apex around 70 feet into an oak tree. Live close by the water, how should I do on 20 meters QRP? Is that a good band to start with?

    Cheers!

  • Very nice, I'm eyeing a IC-706MkIIg right now.

  • That's pretty good with 5 watts. What kind of gain are you getting out of tje antenna?

  • A very easy choice to make between the two radios the Icom 703+ & the Yeasu FT-817.10 watts output, inboard antenna tuner, speech processor for the 703+.None of these for the FT-817.Superb receiver on the Icom. Not near the receive quality on the Yaesu. But the Yaesu costs less.Yes,and you also get less.73.Dennis W7KB.

  • Hello Bob,

This seems to be a nice rig. I'm hoping to get my basic Ham license very soon and I'm thinking to purchase an Icom 703 myself. My question is : what's the difference between a "normal' Icom IC-703 and an Icom IC-703 Plus? Thanks.Daniel

  • @DanCeekey

    Daniel,

It is an awesome rig. They only make the Plus which for the most part means that it has 6 meter capabilities whereas the original did not. I am not even sure if they are still making this rig either. What I am looking at and would be an awesome alternative to this one would the Elecraft KX3. You can learn more at Yahoo Group KX3 thanks for watching and supporting. Take care, Bob.

  • Can't seem to find your 817ND vs 703+ videos. Can you provide a link?

  • Hi, can you please tell me what is the internal atu like on the 703 some say good and others not would it tune up say a random wire antenna such as a rybakov style vertical wire antenna or would need external atu thanks.

  • @RIDDICKorigional.. .Perhaps a 4:1 balun would allow you to tune up on a random wire antenna...the internal ant. tuner will tune to about a 3:1 SWR allowing for normal tuner use with an antenna tuned even somewhat close to resonance. The 703+ has a very nice all around use internal tuner.

  • Hi Bob. About the eBay Li-Ion pack you mentioned:

I'm curious about how charger functions. Have you had a chance to measure operating and charging performance of the pack? Also, is the pack's output polarity clearly marked (I'd hate to damage the rig or other component due to reverse polarity)? I would plan to cut off the male connector and replace it with powerpoles at the component end. What does the pack weigh? I've been waiting for your "comparo" of IC703 v. FT817... TNX Mark WOWWY

  • Hi Bob,

I just bought an IC-703 myself and I'm considering the batterypack aswell.

    Are you sattisfied of it?

Are there other possibilities of batterypacks?

I hope to QSO with you sometime (after I got my license).

    Best regards from Belgium.

    Kristof

  • @PsynceFiction Kristof, I am very happy with the Icom batterypacks, however, recently I have purchased some Li-Ion 6800mah packs from a supplier in China, selling on Ebay and these are very small and last a looonnnnggg time. Search "DC 12V 6800mAh Super Rechargeable Lithium-ion Battery". Delivered to my door with charger was $28. Thanks and good luck with your setup. I am sure you will enjoy it!

  • @PortableQRP Thanks for the very quick reply Bob.

DC 12V ... does that mean that the IC703 keep putting out 10W?

  • Great stuff. I love my 817 but had a 703 for a while and thought that was great too. I guess I stuck with Yaesu as I prefer the menu system.

  • Oh yeah, the OMISS Net is a great group.

  • I just purchased a 703+ from HRO. I am extremely happy with it. I find it's receive to be so much better than the 817 and the DSP functionality really helps clean up the noise.

What antenna are you working that radio from in this video?

  • Hi Bob, I had one of those a few years back & I

ran 80mw on 40 thru 10. made many contacts and

DX too. I have been inactive for awhile but plan to

get back on this year with a new call. Tnx for the

    great demo............73

  • Excellent video. I enjoy using both the 817 and 703. They both have different attributes. I would hate to decide which one to give-up. I like them both!!! 73 from AI4QT in Huntsville, AL

  • I agree, not sure which one to keep if you could only have one. I guess that is one reason I decided to put together a head to head comparison of the two rigs. Not sure I will find the answer, but I am sure going to try. Thanks for watching.

    Happy QRPing.

  • Hello bob, nice demonstration and good quality video. I would love to get radio like this. I decided to save some money and go with an mfj qrp rig. 73

  • Well, I regret selling my MFJ 40 meter SSB rig. I am looking or another one. As far as receive audio they are hard to beat. I love those radios so much. AND, you have a chance off repairing one, if needed. It is all fun! Good luck and thanks for watching.
