Minke Whales which are the primary targets for Japanese Research are actually listed as 'non-endangered least concern' on the IUCN index.
Plus.... their quota's for other species which are more threatened are only like 50 and still allow for greater population growth of the species.
As for whaling sanctuary, not all countries will recognise the sovereignty of Australian regions in Antarctic because Australia fails to meet requirements for claiming ownership of unowned territory.
According to the UN, for a country to claim an unowned territory as their own, they need to display an effort to colonise or authority in the region. The Antarctic is inhospitable and to truly claim it then they would have to display some authority (eg: sending vessels out to patrol the area). Since such display of authority is non-existant, the UN can't recognise Australia's declaration for Whale Sanctuaries.
Even the USA do not officially recognise Australia's sovereignty in the Antarctic.

@chrisdef15 - Currently the killing of elephants is just for their tusk while leaving the rest of the elephants carcass to rot in the African sun. That is the problem. If the rest of the elephant was used as food for humans, animals, or fertilizer, no problem. The whales are consumed for food, pet food, fertilizer, etc. Also elephants are far superior in intelligence than whales (using the "intelligence" card as an excuse to save whales).

If they are illegally whaling in Australian waters, then where is the Australian Navy to stop them? Did Australia take them to court for violating their territorial sovereignty? Since the Australian Navy has not intercepted the whalers, and since no action has been filed in an international court, this tells rational people that Australian waters are not being breached by the whalers. Or are you accusing your government of not protecting the territorial integrity of your nation?

Sea Shepherd has broken the law in Canada and they admitted to sinking a ship or two in Norway. Plus they put lives at risk in the frigid waters of Antarctica. That is not a group I care to endorse. That is a group I would say, whatever they are for, I am against. Whatever they are against, I am for.

For a start.......
They are violating international law for a start. The United Nations Convention on the Law Of the Sea (UNCLOS) specifies that all signatory states shall cooperate with appropriate international bodies for the protection of see mammals.
Japan is a signatory to UNCLOS.
The appropriate body for the conservation of whales is the IWC (which Japan is also a member of).
They also whale in Australian territorial waters, where whaling is banned.

But the laws concerned are still pretty clear cut. Even if you don't accept UNCLOS obligates Japan to defer to the IWC on matters of whale conservation, there is still a Australian Federal Court ruling specifically banning whale hunting in Australia's territorial waters. The whalers themselves admit defying it. They too break the law, so why u take their side over Sea Shepherd? Why so partisan?

Minke Whales which are the primary targets for Japanese Research are actually listed as 'non-endangered least concern' on the IUCN index.
Plus.... their quota's for other species which are more threatened are only like 50 and still allow for greater population growth of the species.
As for whaling sanctuary, not all countries will recognise the sovereignty of Australian regions in Antarctic because Australia fails to meet requirements for claiming ownership of unowned territory.

According to the UN, for a country to claim an unowned territory as their own, they need to display an effort to colonise or authority in the region. The Antarctic is inhospitable and to truly claim it then they would have to display some authority (eg: sending vessels out to patrol the area). Since such display of authority is non-existant, the UN can't recognise Australia's declaration for Whale Sanctuaries.
Even the USA do not officially recognise Australia's sovereignty in the Antarctic.

How come it takes so long to send me the references? You have sent the references to hisaathome already right? (hisaathome said he never didn't receive it though) The you have the references already, so just send them to me.

Keep waiting, but while you are at it, look at the comments where I already gave them, because it the only way you will find them, otherwise research the issue yourself. You don't really need me to hold your hand, do you?
