I was always a Supergirl fan all the way back to the 1950's. Even though she has had many versions and restarts over the years, I'm still a big fan. I was somewhat disappointed by this movie, but all in all it was a real treat to see the character in real life. I thought Helen Slater did an excellent job. When I first saw this movie, I thought from 3:34-3:46 that the rock she grabbed and was squeezing was coal and she was trying to turn it into a diamond just like Superman did on the movie "Superman III" but, for Superman, he did it with no problem but, Supergirl looked like she had problems when I thought it was coal she grabbed and was squeezing.
Great sequence. While the US theatrical version does deserve scorn, the Director's Cut is a far better film overall. This was always my favorite part, as I love the effects and camera movements for when Kara gets imprisoned and then flies away to the Phantom Zone.
@holodock Yes this is probably the international version which is 124 min. long. The U.S. version is probably the one you remembered which was butchered to death at 105min. There's also the director's cut which is 138 min and a 150 min version of the movie out there somewhere probably hidden in some vault.

I know, the flying looks much better quality. She looks faster than Superman as well. Overall the mood of the film seemed darker, closer to Donner's vision than Lesters' comedy campfest. Plus I had a massive crush on Helen's Supergirl when I was young (I was only 6 when this came out).

And MAN, that flying sequence in the beginning of this clip -- look at it! It looks REAL. The chroma keying is top notch, there is no difference between her and the video being put in on the green screen. For all it's faults, this film really looks spectacular. The flying is super well done and just looks dead solid, her costume is kickass, her look is gorgeous, it's got Peter O'Toole!, and that awesome fucking score by Jerry Goldsmith. Man..

Yes, it was sad that she went back to her home at Argo City, and it also felt like a sad ending that, that groundskeeper at the girls school named Ethan didn't get to have Linda Lee/Supergirl stay with him since he said that he really loves Linda Lee. (I remember as Supergirl was flying back to Argo City, Ethan looked up to the sky to Supergirl and said "goodbye Linda" which felt sad to me that he lost the woman he loves and that he will never see her again).

@eightiesfan Hell, they're better than the flying effects in Smallville. Everytime they do it in that show, they go out of their way to make it look fake by putting a stupid blur effect around everything.

When I first saw this movie, I thought from 3:34-3:46 that the rock she grabbed and was squeezing was coal and she was trying to turn it into a diamond just like Superman did on the movie "Superman III" but, for Superman, he did it with no problem but, Supergirl looked like she had problems when I thought it was coal she grabbed and was squeezing.

I think her powers disappeared as soon as she got trapped into the Phantom Zone which is why she couldn't fly or break that rock from 3:34-3:46.

Great sequence. While the US theatrical version does deserve scorn, the Director's Cut is a far better film overall. This was always my favorite part, as I love the effects and camera movements for when Kara gets imprisoned and then flies away to the Phantom Zone.

@holodock Yes this is probably the international version which is 124 min. long. The U.S. version is probably the one you remembered which was butchered to death at 105min. There's also the director's cut which is 138 min and a 150 min version of the movie out there somewhere probably hidden in some vault.

Being Trapped in the Phantom Zone is like the Underworld of Inner Space, that Zaltar was sentenced to die in the forbidden depths. Maybe he invented the time warp through the Phantom Zone has the escape entrance beyond the Radiation to the Yellow sun for Him and Kara to get their powers back.

I know, the flying looks much better quality. She looks faster than Superman as well. Overall the mood of the film seemed darker, closer to Donner's vision than Lesters' comedy campfest. Plus I had a massive crush on Helen's Supergirl when I was young (I was only 6 when this came out).

And MAN, that flying sequence in the beginning of this clip -- look at it! It looks REAL. The chroma keying is top notch, there is no difference between her and the video being put in on the green screen. No white line around her, etc. Just works perfect - pretty mindblowing considering this is from 84.

For all it's faults, this film really looks spectacular. The flying is super well done and just looks dead solid, her costume is kickass, her look is gorgeous, it's got Peter O'Toole!, and that awesome fucking score by Jerry Goldsmith. Man..
If only the story made sense. It's still a lot of fun to watch for me, 'cause I remember it from my childhood and all that, but its a real shame about the darn script.

Both Peter O'Toole and Peter Cook are in Supergirl. Peter O'Toole plays Zaltar, the Argonian sent into the Phantom Zone, and Peter Cook plays the warlock that's apparently teaching Selena magic.

Is to bad In the End of the film she has to leave Earth & went back home to Argo City. She was only In a mission after all she just wants to retrieve that glowing ball thingy called the Omegahedron I think that is what they called it. Other wise if they change the story of Supergirl she would rule the 80's & Helen Slater would win an Oscar. Also they would have made a series about her like a spin off for Lois & Clark The New Adventures of Superman.

Yes, it was sad that she went back to her home at Argo City, and it also felt like a sad ending that, that groundskeeper at the girls school named Ethan didn't get to have Linda Lee/Supergirl stay with him since he said that he really loves Linda Lee. (I remember as Supergirl was flying back to Argo City, Ethan looked up to the sky to Supergirl and said "goodbye Linda" which felt sad to me that he lost the woman he loves and that he will never see her again).
