How else did people expect the officer to get the knife from her without risking her own life. The first thing my husband says when he gets up for work in the morning is "I'm coming home today". @Tahmus Orealy? There are only a few sanctioned disarming moves that an officer is allowed to use when dealing with a deadly weapon (and yes a knife is considered a deadly weapon). There is the taser, pepper spray, or a baton thrust to the abdomen. Which would u prefer?

Pepper spray can be very dangerous on older people, o people with breathing problems/asthma in general. In the end sh had to use one of these methods, and she chose the best. She should be commended for choosing the takedown method which is the most humane, at greater risk to the officer due to the necessity for physical contact.

Without knowing the circumstances leading up to this, all I can say is, if this were my grandmother, that cop would be dead. No one would do that to her and get away with it. I was there so I know what happened from begining to the end before the angy mob showed up(she wouldn't allow any of us near to her to help) . It was not police brutality however a better means could have been used to detain her instead of slamming her on the ground. her wrist/arm could have been twisted slightly to ensure release of the knife. The knife itself was not a machete.

How else did people expect the officer to get the knife from her without risking her own life. The first thing my husband says when he gets up for work in the morning is "I'm coming home today". Someone must have called for help from the police, when the police arrive and do what is called for to end the treat (which is what the lady was at that time) everyone wants to complain about how the situation was handled, I bet if that old lady had cut your loved ones throat you wouldn't complain.

@Tahmus I'm sorry but using the takedown method on a suspect is far more humane and statistically less damaging to a person than a swift baton strike. Pepper spray can be very dangerous on older people, o people with breathing problems/asthma in general. In the end sh had to use one of these methods, and she chose the best. She should be commended for choosing the takedown method which is the most humane, at greater risk to the officer due to the necessity for physical contact.

The cop did go overboard, I think they could have restrained her with the knife without dropping her. The whole thing is jacked up though. I feel for her, and the poor officer that had to deal with that shit. It was just all bad.

Without knowing the circumstances leading up to this, all I can say is, if this were my grandmother, that cop would be dead. No one would do that to her and get away with it. Of course, if this were my grandmother, I never would have let it elevate to this level. I would have taken the knife from her myself. The daughter was there, so why didn't she take it from her? It's obvious the woman could barely even walk, let alone inflict any serious damage with a knife. This was bad all around.

i don't like seeing the old lady gets hurt like that it is just wrong but she is has a knife and does not have her mental faciltys about her which is very bad for everyone she could have hurt some far worse then the cop hurt her there may have been better ways to deal with this but the fact is a cop getting a knife waved at them is gonna act on their training and there best odds of not getting hurt

I was there so I know what happened from begining to the end before the angy mob showed up(she wouldn't allow any of us near to her to help) . It was not police brutality however a better means could have been used to detain her instead of slamming her on the ground. her wrist/arm could have been twisted slightly to ensure release of the knife. The knife itself was not a machete.

Tha lady was left in a locked car in a seat belt sleeping while her daughter was in Walmart shopping. 2. She suffers from dementia. 3. she was afraid that everyone that was trying to help her( before the crowd came) was trying to hurt her. 4. she attacked a young man (maybe 12/13) with the knife before this started.

I know this police officer and feel she did the right thing. I dont care how old you are the lady had a knife which put others in danger. As far as the blood goes thats what happens when you go down on concrete. I support Whitehall's police force 100%.

@romie12321 you will continue to support the tactic used until it's one of your family members, friends, or even yourself. You can clearly tell thewoman was confused she didn't even recognize the law enforcement officer as a safe person to go to for help. I was a military police office on Ft. Bragg so I know there was a better technique that could have been used. The batton could have been used to hit the knife out of her hand or just hit her hand hard enough so she would drop the knife.

Why was she there? and most of all why wasnt her family there with her and trying to stop her? She was at wrong and no matter who you are, if you got a knife your ass is going down. Id rather risk an old lady breaking a hip or crackin a head rather then a police officer getting stabbed over some ridiculous person.
