I remember another incident where armed guards shot a group of people that were there to protest, it was called the Boston Massacre in 1770. British troops opened fire on a crowd that was there to protest the British imposing tariffs and taxes on them. Now the same people calling these people "Unamerican" and laughing at their deaths I'm sure would call the protesters in 1770 "patriots". People who think they have the right to decide who and who isn't a "real" American are truly a sad bunch.
I don't know if anyone here mentioned it, but I was watching television when this shooting actually took place. It was "live" on television. If you look at the photograph of the girl kneeling down, arms spread, mourning over the death of another student, it turned out that she was actually a runaway, and when her parents saw that shot on television, eventually, the campus police caught up with her and she was sent back home. This video is 40 yrs old and i remember it well. I was in college then.
this is one of the saddest tragedies ever endured by innocent students who gathered to protest the war which we all know was a big SNAFU. anyone who finds humour in this ought to feel ashamed - they were just college kids and never deserved to have their lives ended, and their friends murdered. lets just kill one of your friends for voicing an opinion, or standing up against a bully, and see how fucking hilarious you find it.
@rpitts1986 Yeah, because those protesters destroyed the economy. Actually, I agree with you, they should all go home and find a way to destroy the stock market lol

May all california cops involved fry in hell. you shame this nation, you shame those fighting for your rights you shame your parents, and as for your soul, you've already sold it down the river.
More than just that, these "PEACEFUL" youths also set the dorms on fire and chopped up the hoses that the firefighters had run from the trucks to the dorms. Resulting in the death of a firefighter, and hospitilization of other firefighters. They also hit another cop with a rock so hard that it shattered his skull and almost killed him. These idiots got just exactly what they asked for !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where were the protestors when 3,000+ civilians were butchered by the communists in Hue? Kent State was simply restoring law and order. Hue was a cold blooded and calculated massacre.
"When government starts shooting its people in the streets, they lose all legitimacy to govern" The United States Government started shooting in the 60's and has never stopped... By their own admission and standard they are an illegitimate enity.
@PeaceProfit - - iIlegitimate entity = ??? - = no capish - Any Physicist or Biologist , [ especially Darwin ] will tell you there is no such thing as an "illegitimate entity".
@isaysee i*am of course speaking in terms of the social contract between The*People and their government, and yes indeed just as in nature that contract allows the legitimate parental destruction of those in its care, yet humanity has deemed such action as terms that void these arrangement's... capish ??

all of this is and will continuous loop throughout the linear timeline. Untill God has allowed you every single opportunity to humble yourself before his grace and mercy, brought to you by the Perfect man, Jesus Christ, defender of humanity and enemy of the nephelim, fallen ones and all that is evil. you will die. He died for you. when you die, if it is without him as your Lord, you will not escape eternity alone. Repent of your sins and ask Jesus to be your Lord.
After the scumbags murdered JFK, RFK & MLK.. they had free reign to stomp out the will of the the PEOPLE! Look at America now. Sheeple. Busily tweeting away as our country rots and is totally eviscerated. The greedy scumbags have.. 'won'. Just as they did throughout history. The very same entities infiltrated the Roman empire, rotted it from within, looted it's wealth & burned and destroyed it's technology. Germany suffered the same fate, and now us. It has been in the works.. long years.
Ronald Reagan was a great man indeed! A++ The hippies and the freaks were absolutely worthless. The hippies and the freaks did not do a dam thing for America! The hippies and the freaks cost the taxpayers millions of dollars do to the willful and malicious destruction and defacement of public and private property that the hippies and the freaks were responsible for. in addition, millions of dollars were spent on police to protect public and private property from the hippies and freaks!
Well done video. A total tragedy. Poorly trained and scared National Guard with live ammo and war protesters. It was a deadly mix. I was in that age bracket and saw it on the news shortly after it happened. I was in college at the time. Those National Guard kids were considered monsters at the time, but it was not true. They were just kids too. The blame was higher up. The guard should have never been sent in and should have never been given live ammo if they were sent in.
How could the criminals that run this country be allowed to get away with that you don't dare protest what this country is doing in Vietnam what a police state in1970 and what a police state in2011 we need protests again in this country like during the Vietnam war
You might think that those are over, but not. On April 11, 2002 , a massive demonstration walked towards the Venezuelan Presidential Palace to protests against the continuous violation of the people's basic constitutional rights. The president, Lieutenant Colonel Hugo Chavez, ordered the Venezuelan Army to stop the flood of more than 500,000. The Army said NO, so he ordered his paramilitary, Círculos Bolivarianos, to shoot at the demonstrators. More than 20 dead, more than 100 wounded.
The Monkees' Peter Tork believed when Kent State occurred, it was a sign that the 60's had ended. While Paul Simon said in recent years, he believed that the 60's ended and the 70's began in 1971; because as he pointed out you had every American (including him), young and old upset about the way the country was running. I read "Nixonland" and guess where Kent State student victim Jeffery Miller was shot when he died? In the head-a sign that "The Ghost of John F. Kennedy" was hovering around.
To be honest, I would not blame the soldiers for shooting. Yeah, I do understand that the soldiers were high-strung young kids, but that did not cause them to fire. The students were stupid enough to commit Arson and then ATTACK fire fighters trying to put it out. The students were the ones who threw rocks, bricks, and heavy objects at the soldiers. If anyone would be put in a life or death situation like this, they would take another person's life before giving up theirs.

What ticks me off to no end are the comments you all make on subjects you really know very little about other than what your fed by media. Their business is ratings and they document what makes you angry or mad but seldom will you see the whole picture. But yet you all make uneducated assumptions of what you read or hear from media.
I feel sorry for every war veteran, innocent villager, child, student and parent that had to suffer just because America was in a stupid little contest with Russia. I wonder what inhumanities are being commited in Iraq and Afghanistan ever since the states limited what they can film there. Poor people.

We should at the very least respect the military for the freedoms we enjoy. If I recall correctly, the anti war movement challenged both LBJ and McNamara, but never condemned the veterans. Anyone who reads at length about that unfortunate day, will learn that two combat veterans from Vietnam were present at the time of the shootings. Both were KSU students, who were among the group of students.
@jaybirdzz and so their presence justifies the random murders of four students and the injuries of 9 others, which left one man paralyzed for the rest of his life? no, nothing really could ever justify ripping someone's constitution "good ol' american" rights and "freedoms" out of their hands and shooting them in cold blood. It's sad how many psychopaths we have in authority.
@jgame99 You talk of 4 dead and you chastise authorities and military as cold blooded Phycho's Get some facts Idiot. 1966 campus Texas 15 ,1983 Wah Mee club Seattle Wa 14, 1984 Mc Donalds San Diego 21, 1988 Laboratory California 7, 1993 Law office San Fran 8 , 1995 Oklahoma Mc veigh 168 1999 High School Colorado 12, 2002 road sniper VA 10, 2005 High School Minnesota 5 2006 Post office Ca 7 , 2006 Party Seattle 6, 2007 VA Tech 32 That's just the big ones305 dead NONE by Police or Military.
@jgame99 You have completely missed my point. It never occurred to me that anyone would even suggest that the presence of unarmed Vietnam Vets-dressed in civilian clothes-justified the actions of the ONG. I just wanted to point out the fact that the only Vietnam vets present were within the group of students, and potential victims. This was intended to contradict the attempts to demonize the group of students as anti American agitators, rather than citizens protesting RN's escalation.
It is a over-the-hill geezer illusion that 'soldiers' defend our freedom. WE, THE PEOPLE, defend our Freedom by asserting our right to be Free everywhere we go. Using a gun to assert oneself in any matter except self-defense is an act of impotentence and a grose failure to communicate with Heart and Mind.
@jrs6100 Massacre, arson, terrorism and genocide are the evil instruments of nation-states. Four innocent students were massacred and 9 more innocent students were wounded by National Guard punks indiscriminately firing 30.06 rounds at Kent State University students on May 4, 1970. There was no justifiable use of lethal force. The Rights of the People ALWAYS supercede the illusory constructs of nation-states.
Actually, free enterprise makes the rich richer, and the poor richer, and the middle class richer. That's why the left hates it so. It proves you don't need a government caretaker. In short, you don't need them.
@JohnBisMe absolutely, the left relies on dividing people, and prosperity unites people. Capitalism = prosperity = unity so therefore dems are against it.
they love finger pointing, and class warfare. They want american vs american, while they pick our pockets
What you see in this video is the "end" without anything leading up to that day. Riots on campus and through the city of Kent. For days. The rioters had overwhelmed the city police, the county sheriff, and highway patrol. That is why the Nat'l Guard was called in. Yes, it is a terrible end to the situation there, but you must remember what had gone on before that day.
@ThirdSon13 Yes, you're right. Just because Tricky Dick lied and said he'd end the war just to get elected and on April 30, 1970 said he was going to escalate the war by going into Cambodia, the peace loving citizens had no justification to protest. The part you conveniently left out of the equation is that the protesters were unarmed and the NG opened fire on them resulting in 12 hits and 4 dead, none of whom were armed or posed a threat to the rifle toting NG.
@RonCheneler Something you left out: those who supported Kenneday and Johnson were supporting a couple of "war mongers", right? But hey, how convenientv to putv the blame all on a politician mainly because he had an R next to his name. The arrogance of the left was awful and it's even worse today. Ditto the ignorance.
@velveetaslingshot you're right but unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world, I wish we did, but until mankind as a whole learns we'll always need people who are prepared to fight for whats right. What would a pacifists response be to someone like Hitler who is only encouraged by what he sees as weakness to ever increasing acts of barbarism. When that happens the world needs people who will fight to stop it because sometime words don't work
@GargleMyMayonaze Hitler would have been meaningless without soldiers. Just another power starved lunatic ranting in the streets. So I go back to my original statement. If every soldier put down their rifle, what would be left to defend?
It is important to remember the historical context. RM had been elected in 1968 pledging to reduce troop level in Vietnam, and pursue "peace with honor." (The Paris peace talks had begun prior to the election). Those who claim that his well stated platform was to fight and win are wrong. Many were surprised when RN held a press conference-covered by all major networks- and announced that he was expanding the war into Cambodia. This led to student protests across the country.
they did this as an effort to scare people into not protesting the war.Now they dont have to worry about protesters. both wars are basically kept out of the media. So most americans dont think about it. there is a reason the news talks more about dancing with the stars then they do about are soldgers in iraq and afghanistan
Unfortunately, the TV networks today cannot afford to cover the wars very much because the nets have cut their budgets to the bone. It's expensive to gather news. Besides, Katie Courick can get an audience with Steve Hartman feelgood pieces. Uncle Walt was right. It's no longer the news. It's chick news. Flip over to ABC and Diane Sawyer's delivery is so slow you wonder how they manage to fit as many stories as they do.
@RaveForSaleMan I dont believe that they cant afford to report the news. they dont report it because they are told not too.we are left completely in the dark so that we dont know whats going on over there. we must not be doing good things over there or we would have the people behind us. they are fighting us because they know we are only there to exploit a weeker nation and steel its resources. thats why america fights wars. safty or freedom has nothing to do with it
@smithdsmit ...exactly......who do you think they had michael jackson on the air for weeks after his death.....its to cover what they dont want us to see
@smithdsmit the other difference is there is no draft now, so most people are not as directlyt affected ..i think if they introduced the draft, both wars would end soon
@kevinantonyrowland America loves war because it's big business. Misery and suffering among everyday people of the world means little to the corporate elites who have Washington - and with it the remainder of the West - in the palms of their hands.
Sorry folks, It was an evil deed by an under trained, extremely fatigued National Guard but you get nowhere by attacking and insulting people. That seems to be the norm for talk forums and you tube and it is very sad. Everyone has freedom of speech without being accused of racism or being a communist or anything else. I am hoping that this trash talk as I see everywhere will cease, as none of us have the right to do that. Right byan 85? Every day there's at least 3 sides to every story
@byan85 The US government is what's keeping you alive from saying stuff like that, we have freedom of speech. yes it was a tragedy and an evil deed. But we have to remember that those National Guard soldiers had the choice to open fire or not.
@FreeHankook No, I don't live in the US. What do you mean I have no right to talk about it? Your country imposes its ideals all over the fucking world. What your country does has an impact on all of our lives, from your disgusting wars to your globalising corporations and entertainment industries. And you might want to reformulate that "living in the US" to "being a US citizen".
@byan85 I'm not American either lol, this shows how ignorant the rest of the world is and how hypocritical you are. Sure America has made some poor choices when it comes to political leaders, but the "globalising corporations and entertainment industries" you speak of are just as big anyhwere else in the world as it is in the U.S. So you're telling me you don't watch movies and listen to music? shut the fuck up you hypocrite and keep your mouth shut if you don't know what you're talking about
@FreeHankook I took "United States" and "jap exterminator" as indicators of your nationality. I think you missed my point about the entertainment industries completely. What I meant was that these industries emanate from the U.S., leading to a slow demise and homogenisation of foreign cultures. It doesn't feel nice to watch young Irish children growing up speaking like Miley Cyrus. Also, political leaders are nothing but marionettes to serve the agenda of the financial oligarchs.
@50poiuyt so do nothing about 9/11? I'm pretty sure any country would have gone to war after that, what you're saying is that we shouldn't have done anything back and let those innocent people die in vain? America is full of idiots but at least these idiots now how to sympathize. stupid brit
@50poiuyt what makes me sick is people like you who talk America's war "crimes" and then ignore all the shit that North Vietnam did to South Vietnam and the war crimes Iraq has done over the years. shut your goddam mouth boy
@FreeHankook Unfortunately for you the rest of the world is not going to shut its "goddam mouth". The USA has taken over as the most war mongering nation in the world - responsible for mass murder and mayhem across it - all because your greedy economy needs to grab the world's resources, especially oil. And what do you mean by N. Vietnam & S.Vietnam. USA split the country by putting in a puppet dictator in the south. And Saddam Hussein. Guess who put him in power when it was convenient for them.
@FreeHankook The original goal was to go after Bin Laden but it was totally botched by an inept, war-loving president who wanted to finish what his daddy started and make his corporate republication buddies wealthier than they already are. Now you're stuck in Iraq and Afghanistan - the modern day, loose-loose Vietnam. There is a reason that Republicans like free enterprise .. it keeps the rich rich and the poor poor. It is not the democracy you think it is.
@kingtourism LOL..The goal was not to solely take out Bin-Laden. Remember our troops rarely have the lead on missions there. It's inept and corrupt Afghanis who our troops must follow and get intelligence from. The Afghanis will never stand up and fight for themselves because they live in fear. Iraqis still live in fear. Theres so many factions and warlords in Afghanistan vying for power. Until they get together they will always live like that. Has nothing to do with republicans
@kingtourism Um, this isn't a democracy. It's a constitutional republic. And Clinton is the one who botched going after Bin Laden (USS Cole, Kobar Towers, etc). By the way, you meant to say "lose-lose", not "loose-loose". Note how the "s" is voiced rather than voiceless, like a soft "c". They would have taught you that in public school had the NEA actually been interested in educating you instead of merely indoctrinating you
In 1970 I was 21. It's nice to know someone here can see through the flag waving camouflage of the Republican party. "Now come on all you big strong men, Uncle Sam needs your help again, Got himself in a terrible jam, Way down yonder Afghanistan!"
@cincyblows Soldiers themselves are brave and I have a deep respect for them. However, the government they fight for is throwing them into wars we have no business in. Well, I take that back war is about business. This "left", "right" business has got to end. The fact of the matter is no matter left or right, people are going to have extreme opinions.
@kingtourism To say something so completely retarded as "free enterprise keeps the rich rich and the poor poor" is very sad this day and age where the Soviet Union and East Germany fell because they were abysmal failures. Free enterprise is the reason you have an account on Youtube, dipshit. You're peddling nothing but class warfare fueled by your own class envy.
@kingtourism Sure it is. Democracy is two wolves and a sheep debating what the dinner menu is going to look like. You know it wont end well for the sheep... And, don't kid yourself -this isn't a partisan issue. Dem, Rep, Lib, Con - they're all the same. The "dancing with the stars" comment applies to this too. As long as wealth and power is involved.. wars will exist.
@kingtourism Obama isn't any better. I don't think Bin Laden finally being assassinated just before an election year when Obama's approval ratings were only about 38% is a coincidence.
@kaldemvor That doesn't matter. The elections are over a year away by this time next year most people will have forgotten all about this, and also al-qaeda came out saying he was dead. So it doesn't help him to much.
@Samitchboy We'll see. Obama's approval ratings shot up 15-19% after Bin Laden's alleged death. Obama is going to get all the mileage he can out of this one.
@kingtourism Not excusing the Repubs but which party started more wars? The answer is Dems. Let's list what they started: D Jefferson Davis: U.S. Civil War D Wilson: WW1 D FDR: WW2 D Truman: Korean War D Kennedy: Bay of Pigs D Johnson: Vietnam War D Carter: Soviet-Afghan War D Clinton: Bosnian and Kosovo War D Obama: Libya War The Dems are just as bad as the Repubs. And btw, considered rethinking about your comment as Bin Laden was already killed by our U.S. Navy Seals. OHHRAH.
There are two sides to this story, that of the protesters, and that of the guardsmen. The National Guard, at this time, was not properly trained in crowd control measures. They lacked leadership in this area, and were very unprepared for what they encountered. I cannot blame them, because they were just as scared as the protesters. The protesters did not realize the guardsmen were given live ammunition. They were exercising their free speech rights. This tragedy finds no blame.
@09TexasTitan (p.s.) I think what really blows my mind is not this... but the fact that, in order to be a good human and live up to what has been learned, one will still find themselves confronted by the like of you ....and have to deal with your smoking, bloody fuc__ing mess... as usual. Up close and personal.
Because, in the end, we need each other to survive. Go figure.
There is going to come a day... when you realize that this kind of attitude is actually the very source of the imploding social structure of the country which people like you claim to be so proud of.
You are going to realize that it doesn't make you sound tough or brave but, in fact, that it is probably the most ignorant comment posted here.
And you'll be faced with the damage you've inflicted on your world with your way to be. And you'll have to deal.
I have done a lot of research into the shootings, and have an original copy of the President's Commission on Campus Unrest report. The vast majority of the Kent student body was unaware of any order that assemblies had been banned on campus. The administration had created flyers saying this, but they were randomly distributed, if at all. The nearest student to the guard at the time of the shootings was over 20 yards away, and an examination of the field by the FBI did not turn up any "bricks".
The amount of misinformation is frightening. How could the students be ordered off campus when classes were being held? Where does this nonsense about brick throwing mobs of hippies rushing the guard come from. We are fortunate to live in a free society where information is available to all. Look at the videos that are available. If interested, read the Scranton report; read the FBI report. Draw your own informed opinions.
@jaybirdzz Not misinfo. See the wikipedia article on this. they were ordered not to assemble for a rally at the plaza or whatever they called that open area where this occurred. 12,000 fliers were distributed. They did anyway. There had been 3 days of rioting, looting and arson, and on monday the crowd began again to get violent, picking up whatever they could and throwing it at the guardsmen. This was not a peaceful gathering to protest policy as the constitution protects out right to do.
This is my last post on this subject. The wikipedia article is brief and says very little. If you had read either the FBI report, or Scranton report, which distribute blame to many, you would not make statements indicating that the students were massing to attack the guard. The statements about bricks and Molotov cocktails being thrown is misinformation. Just look at the video. The FBI later found only one brick lying near the scene, but it is unclear whether it was ever thrown by anyone. .

I find this entire thing very strange, your military is made up of American Citizens,
The military is put in place to protect the people from outside invaders
Governments are voted in by the people, which are also American Citizens, so if
I understand this correctly, after America votes in a Goverment, the government then
orders the military to shoot the civilians, is that how America works, thats democracy?

More than just that, these "PEACEFUL" youths also set the dorms on fire and chopped up the hoses that the firefighters had run from the trucks to the dorms. Resulting in the death of a firefighter, and hospitilization of other firefighters. They also hit another cop with a rock so hard that it shattered his skull and almost killed him.

MSM586 8 months ago

@FreeHankook I took "United States" and "jap exterminator" as indicators of your nationality. I think you missed my point about the entertainment industries completely. And what do you mean by N. Vietnam & S.Vietnam. USA split the country by putting in a puppet dictator in the south. And Saddam Hussein. Guess who put him in power when it was convenient for them.

@katherine232 I agree.

@kingtourism your a fucking idiot if you really believe that, if you don't you're a fucking lying propaganda artist in need of a soul.
you are so pathetic, I feel almost guilty insulting you. Good day sir, or should I say little child.
Alexn1067 1 year ago
@kingtourism Um, this isn't a democracy. It's a constitutional republic. And Clinton is the one who botched going after Bin Laden (USS Cole, Kobar Towers, etc). By the way, you meant to say "lose-lose", not "loose-loose". Note how the "s" is voiced rather than voiceless, like a soft "c". They would have taught you that in public school had the NEA actually been interested in educating you instead of merely indoctrinating you

@cincyblows Go here and substitute the lyric "Viet Nam" with "Afghanistan". The song still holds-up.

In 1970 I was 21. It's nice to know someone here can see through the flag waving camouflage of the Republican party. "Now come on all you big strong men, Uncle Sam needs your help again, Got himself in a terrible jam, Way down yonder Afghanistan!"

@RaveForSaleMan I'll be sure to thank the next soldier I meet for your opportunities to speak freely.

@cincyblows Soldiers themselves are brave and I have a deep respect for them. However, the government they fight for is throwing them into wars we have no business in. Well, I take that back war is about business. This "left", "right" business has got to end. The fact of the matter is no matter left or right, people are going to have extreme opinions.
kube82 1 year ago
@kingtourism Really? Because the Clintons and the Gores also had financial interest in this war. Sorry the fact is so rude.

@kingtourism how can anyone take you seriously when you say things like "loose-loose Vietnam"?? Are you 12 years old?
WigglesAround 1 year ago
@kingtourism To say something so completely retarded as "free enterprise keeps the rich rich and the poor poor" is very sad this day and age where the Soviet Union and East Germany fell because they were abysmal failures. Free enterprise is the reason you have an account on Youtube, dipshit. You're peddling nothing but class warfare fueled by your own class envy.

Trashfished 11 months ago
@kingtourism Sure it is. Democracy is two wolves and a sheep debating what the dinner menu is going to look like. You know it wont end well for the sheep... And, don't kid yourself -this isn't a partisan issue. Dem, Rep, Lib, Con - they're all the same. The "dancing with the stars" comment applies to this too. As long as wealth and power is involved.. wars will exist.

@kingtourism i thought obama was going to get us out !!!
MrTtillub 10 months ago
@kingtourism Obama isn't any better. I don't think Bin Laden finally being assassinated just before an election year when Obama's approval ratings were only about 38% is a coincidence.
kaldemvor 8 months ago
@kaldemvor That doesn't matter. The elections are over a year away by this time next year most people will have forgotten all about this, and also al-qaeda came out saying he was dead. So it doesn't help him to much.
Samitchboy 8 months ago
@Samitchboy We'll see. Obama's approval ratings shot up 15-19% after Bin Laden's alleged death. Obama is going to get all the mileage he can out of this one.

@kingtourism The Democrats are just as bad- they just screw us in a different position.

Go figure.
See you there.

@09TexasTitan "good ole hippie shoot"

The nearest student to the guard at the time of the shootings was over 20 yards away, and an examination of the field by the FBI did not turn up any "bricks".
rwentz21 1 year ago
The amount of misinformation is frightening. How could the students be ordered off campus when classes were being held? Where does this nonsense about brick throwing mobs of hippies rushing the guard come from. We are fortunate to live in a free society where information is available to all. Look at the videos that are available. If interested, read the Scranton report; read the FBI report. Draw your own informed opinions.
jaybirdzz 1 year ago
@jaybirdzz Not misinfo. See the wikipedia article on this. they were ordered not to assemble for a rally at the plaza or whatever they called that open area where this occurred. 12,000 fliers were distributed. They did anyway. There had been 3 days of rioting, looting and arson, and on monday the crowd began again to get violent, picking up whatever they could and throwing it at the guardsmen. This was not a peaceful gathering to protest policy as the constitution protects out right to do.
batvette 1 year ago
This is my last post on this subject. The wikipedia article is brief and says very little. If you had read either the FBI report, or Scranton report, which distribute blame to many, you would not make statements indicating that the students were massing to attack the guard. The statements about bricks and Molotov cocktails being thrown is misinformation. Just look at the video. The FBI later found only one brick lying near the scene, but it is unclear whether it was ever thrown by anyone. .
