This aircraft was cancelled several years ago due to the MASSIVE cost overruns in development and it was the President HIMSELF who cancelled it stating that the money was best used elsewhere. It is a great aircraft and has been giving years of reliable service in Europe and around the world but the presidential version got out of hand with all the add-ons and modifications being demanded.

This aircraft was cancelled several years ago due to the MASSIVE cost overruns in development and it was the President HIMSELF who cancelled it stating that the money was best used elsewhere. It is a great aircraft and has been giving years of reliable service in Europe and around the world but the presidential version got out of hand with all the add-ons and modifications being demanded.

I think the cost of that helicopter is reasonable considering the time we live, the age of terrorism, and so forth.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Marine One is just as heavily armor-plated as the presidential limousine and has the same special electrical wiring that Air Force One has that protects them from electrmagnetic pulses during a nuclear attack. Furthermore, Marine One has state of the art communications equipment for the president's use.

The biggest obstacle is trying to shoehorn the command/control and transport capabilities of the big VH-3 into something not much bigger than the Blackhawk, so it can be carried on the C-5 and C-17 without being disassembled...the VXX is supposed to replace both the VH-3D and VH-60, but that obviously can't be done without long and very costly R&D

The VH-92 built by Sikorsky in the United States would have been less expensive. The VH-71 was based on the Agusta-Westland EH101, and in order to be used as the presidential helicopter, a joint venture was set up with Bell Helicopter, and an entirely new factory in the U.S. had to be built. Sikorsky has already been building the basic S-92 "Heli-bus" platform for several years now, and the platform is field-proven in daily use. This shows how the pentagon just gives away gold-plated contracts.

Yes, it was the Bush Administration that began the process of new choppers...as this and other videos indicate, the venerable VH-3D SeaKings are over 30 years old. I don't give a shit who the President is...should we wait until they are 50 years old?!? They will be 40-plus by the time the Kestrels are online!!! It's all of this EMP Hardening that has jacked the price up to 400 Million apiece...higher than the price of each 747 serving as Air Force One. Plus a kitchen?

At any rate, the program has been canceled by SecDef Gates. The newer VH-60N BlackHawks...nice choppers...only cost around $36 Million each. Quite a difference from 400M! They got too fancy. Safety is a consideration, but I'm not sure Marine One needs to be nuke-blast resistant...just fast enough to get to the safety of Air Force One.
