Iowa Class Battleships Re-activated & War on Terror & Piracy!

It is to bad that there are only 2 battleships left that are able to be Recommission. The rest are to old and impossible to fix it would be better off making a new battleship.

SO?? any more info......given the fact that 3 Iowas are now confirmed museums and the 4th is almost a done deal. It would take a huge amount of money to "Recommission" these ships, money the U.S. does not have.

The pirates will be a good shake down for the USS Iowa, once they are blasted to oblivion we can unleash her on China. I will say this though, unless a unified EU navy is ran, and crewed by the British, it can never hope to beat the United States. A good rule of thumb is the British do not lose naval wars, and I would hope that wouldn't change in a unified EU navy.

I don't think the EU has any old battleships they were all sunk or scraped, the european battleships were better along with the japanese, than the USA ones but they did not have enough carriers. Now the key sea weapon is a nuck sub thats how the UK sunk the Argentine ww2 ship in the Falklands war. What if we could bring back the yamato, Musashi, Hood, Bismark, and the other great battle ships from ww2. but i think there time has gone subs and carriers are the way forward. thanks

lets not forget though... the aircraft carriers are just as big, if not bigger than these monsters.. so perhaps it won't be so bad, having a massive ship like this, equipped with modern technology after-all. i can't see it being on the front, but i sure as hell could see it doing something useful.

absolutely beautiful ship but Indeed, this is the 21st century , regardless how well equipped it is, it's still a massive target, even the smallest ships nowadays could sink that thing. There's a reason why most modern ships are small compact and HIGHLY stealthy. Yea i'm absolutely certain it could do some serious damage above all others, but it's no use if you can't hide yourself nowadays. It's a shame really. Still, it will have its uses!!

@nuclearblastowns I am sure that the ship fits in with a strategic and tactical plan of action - that is sustained bombardment of the coastal area's of an enemies homeland - your argue your point well but you must consider the other weapons backing this warship up will be carriers, though your argument would apply to carriers too as they are too large, larger and slower than the Iowa class.

This weapon will be used as part of a combined arms team.

@nuclearblastowns And a U.S aircraft carrier is small and "HIGHLY" stealthy?? I think not. These Battleships were updated in the 80's with the most sophisticated equipement of the day. The Iowa's at that time were the most powerfull ships in the world and could engage up to 52 targets for several hours. They Had Tomahawk cruise and Harpoon missles,Phalanx to counter incoming missles and planes. They also have the thickest armor of any other ship afloat! And a 2012 update??

A one one ton torpedo detonating under the the hull will snap this thing like a twig. You should read up on carrier killer cruise missiles. Those will sink it in one shot and they are not even nuclear.

@leninstreet Maybe the Binladen's and AlQueada have weapons that can destroy any of the current frigates and cruisers at dock as they did the USS Cole (because of its weak armor) but I doubt since, the current balance of power favours the US & EU against China that a one ton torpedo and or killer carrier cruise missile will be used by US or EU's immediate enemies against the Iowa Class ships. Although the Binladen's certainly have the money to buy them they don't have China's favor.

@infokemp Bin Laden not only has the money to buy a high class torpedo, he more then likely has the contacts to do so as well. Not only Bin but also most likely the Somali pirates as well. They like Bin are muslim and have a whole lot of money from the hijacking trade. The north koreans would have no problem selling one to them. Check out what the North Korean torpedo did to the Cheonan corvette. Only a complete idiot would risk a huge ship like that for some pirates.

The Russians and Chinese can sink this thing any time they want. They even have special cruise missiles for the task. Using those against a gigantic target like this they cannot miss.

@leninstreet Well you may be right but at what political cost - you also have to take into account that the Battleships will by their history of operations before be backed up by satalite, destroyers and attack submarines to protect the Battle - Group as a whole.

This ship is going to be tested on the Somali Pirates as a Sea Trail, from what I have heard and only once it has been modernized - just on cost this is less than building a new frigate yet you get 10 times more firepower.

What a load of bullshit. This thing is the biggest sitting duck the world has ever seen. It is a huge radar target and has no defense against torpedos, missiles and even aircraft.

@leninstreet It will be modernized and upgraded in its role as a Capital ship - you are right that no weapon is invincible but as I said in the video it will be a platform for modern weapons and the 16 inch guns will be used for shore bombardment as the USMC has requested for 20 years.

The ship also has a hardened steel belt of armor which no modern cruise missile (known) is designed to penetrate, it was hit in the Iraq war 1 with missiles and there was no effect on the armor.

@Elitepoosniff Well I did not know that the Dreadnought was still about but the Tragedy of the Vanguard class being used for bombing practice is well known.

What we need is an armoured platform which cruise missiles can be launched from on mass and with sustainable fire. i.e. a modern cruise-missile-battleship and created by the EU.

@infokemp I believe the Iowa class and the big battle ships of that time were born from the British empires Dreadnoughts in WW1.
