What is Silica Gel: Basically it's a desiccant, a hygroscopic substance that takes the water out of the air around it.
Why throw it away: I wouldn't throw it away :P Use it to keep moisture from getting into different things.
Why not to eat silica gel: Yeah... it absorbs water, your body can't digest it, and you'd probably feel VERY uncomfortable as long as it remained in your digestive system.
You are supposed to cut it open and throw the little beads onto the floor near a friend. They bounce like crazy making noise which usually freaks out unsupecting people.
silica doesnt wash your bag. silica gel is a high water absorbing solid. it is placed in jackets, bags, purses etc. so moisture does not ruin the product or material. Its NOT toxic, but the reason why we cant eat it is because it will absorb the fluids in our stomach and causes less minerals(water) to absorb into our bloodstream resulting in feeling "sick". most effects usually consist of being mildly dehydrated. i had to study this shit for my job because we use it to dry out wood faster.

It absorbs moisture to keep mold from growing! Used a lot in electronics & dry food storage. It won't hurt you, just don't eat it!
