  • Class.

  • bats: all i can say as an old boy, thank you.....i was there

  • I loves me my Bats

  • saw them play this at the Subway tavern in christchurch waaaaaay back

  • still love it <3

  • Hey don't limit to the hemisphere :)

This song is rich, it elevates as all great music can. thanks for the upload.

  • One of the best bands in the hemisphere. the Grant McLennan reference is apt.

  • The Bats - when you think of all the dross we've been exposed to for the last 25 years- and these guys have been making fantastic music all the time. They deserve a place among NZ (and Australasia's) best bands). Period.

  • I love "The Hollowmen" - such off-beat satire that only the intelligent can find funny - for everyone else it goes right over their head. The bassy beat of this song in their intro is a great introduction to this classic Australian band.

  • @TheDeadlyDelilah ummmmm they are from New Zealand

  • generally i like new alternative music... but this is in another league altogether!

  • saw these guys play on sunday at chicks hotel in port chalmers. fucking blew my socks off. so stoked when they played this song, it's definately my favorite bats song.

  • yeah he built that bass guitar i hear. I would go with 'enthusiastically melodious' over; "enthusiastically amateur"; .. (erp?)

  • daddy´s highway de los bats es lo mejor que he oido en mi jodida vida!

  • the perfect driving song

i wake up in the morning like really early

and drive with this song blasting

    godly

  • amateur!!?

  • @krispian Hardly amatuer - classic more like - don't you know that simplest is often best?

  • @krispian What really appealed to me about the Bats -- other than Robert Scott's songwriting -- is Paul Kean's bass playing. He was anything but a root-note only bassist, pumping out nothing but accompanying eighth notes (although there's nothing wrong with that). His playing is actually fairly complex, especially for rock music.

  • incredible, just got into all these bands- cant get enough. that bass line..

  • This is one of my all-time favorite songs. The atmosphere it conjures up is haunting and gothic...beautiful stuff. Everyone in the band is so talented. Kaye's guitar tone is the stuff of legend, and Paul is probably my favorite bass player in rock. And Robert Scott? He ain't no cross-eyed geek. He's a songwriter extraordinaire. Thank you, Bats, for giving us so many fantastic songs. And The Guilty Office is great!

  • gold!!

  • Rofl that's great(:

  • agree

  • Paul Kean is a bass guitar god.

  • The Bats will come to Rouen (France) on 7th June and to Paris on 8th June !

  • I'm going to see then in Gothenburg on 1 juin !

  • Never heard of them before discovering them on YouTube, but they are great.

  • lol i got it from hollow men to

  • I love the Bats. Silverbeet is such a great album. though this isn't on it. I only heard this through the Hollowmen.

  • I just love the intro to this song, just so bloody catchy

  • One of the greatest NZ Bands!

  • The inherent catchiness...So great;...

  • Brilliant.

  • Kaye is so pretty here.

  • I love the bass in this song. A sort of rolling thing that's all over the place. Lovely :)

  • exactly, the bass in most Bats songs makes me cry with total delight.

like the songs of grant mclennan.

  • This song will always bring back Dunedin for me, but now there's a little part of Canberra stuck to it too, which is fine by me. A brilliant song!

  • What the fuck is the hollowmen? time to get on to NZ classics people!

  • The Hollowmen is an Aussie TV show. This is in the intro of the show.

  • Mna was desperate for this song thanks to alot of searching lol i finally found it. Bloody good song

  • got here from hollowmen it was bloody hard to find!!!

  • I found it on wikipedia in less then 2 minutes :-p

  • love this song and absolutely loving the hollowmen

  • I know this is the theme for the Hollowmen, but the first time I heard it, I thought it was some BBC police drama. Just had that particular sound.

  • i found it in less than one. beat that assface

  • *laughs* Now you mention it... though I think it suits very well. The starting to The Hollowmen is brilliant. I love how it's all dark at the start, then dawn, then day etc. And Lake BG... ^^

  • love the hollowmen, love this song

  • another fan of the hollowmen here...love lachy hulme... this is a cool song too

  • Oh yeah, another awesome kiwi track from the same movie soundtrack is from a band named "The Clean" and there superb track "Anything Could Happen" Check it out on here on youtube then go buy there album

  • Here's a fun fact! The guy who plays Murph in the Hollomen (his name has escaped me, dammit) was actually going to play The Joker in the new Batman film. But Ledger beat him to it. Maybe that was a good thing, after how Ledger got depressed and the pills and such. And if he HAD played The Joker, we wouldn't have him in The Hollowmen. Ah well. Que sera sera.

  • Yeah his name is Lachy Hulme!

  • Of course... thanks!

  • Love this band... and yes, have to admit, I was led here by The Hollowmen!

  • yea i got here from the hollowmen

  • Love this band... and yes, have to admit, I was led here by The Hollowmen!

  • Haha, seems there are heaps of us led to this song and band by Hollowmen

  • Looks like there are lots of Hollowmen fans here! Great song, well used in the show!

  • Awesome song. And might I add, The Hollowmen is an awesome show. Seriously awesome. You know, after the first episode the ABC greenlighted a second seris of it! So happy ^^.

  • where can i get this awesome song as an mp3 wicked song

  • Do the right thing and buy the CD, The bats deserve to be paid. File sharing takes food out of the mouths of the artist.

  • they do indeed and i have done, bloody hard to track down tho.

  • Yeah awesome tune, those who remember this track appeared on the soundtrack for the classic kiwi film "Topless women talk about there lives" loved the film and the soundtrack is a ripper. Nice to see the bats get some exposure here in oz (only about 10 years to late)

  • No, the end credits for Hollowmen clearly state "North by North" by "The Bats", even mentions the individual band members as composers. However, I tried putting up a link for this video at Youtube on an ABC forum site for the Hollowmen, and they [ABC forum moderator] got 'all stroppy on me' and removed the link. W**Kers.

  • Fantastic song. Thanks to the makers of The Hollowmen for introducing me to the Bats.

Shame on the ABC for telling me it was something completely different when I asked them about the music!

  • What song did they say it was, I think the music is different on the website

  • When I first visited the Hollowmen website, the music was exactly as it is at the beginning of this youtube video (and on the promo on TV). The arrangement appears to have since changed a bit. The incidental music in the first episode seems to be a variation of the same song.

The ABC told me it was called "Fallen Angels" by Olivier Foubert, but I couldn't find anything specifically about this (apart from Foubert being a French actor/composer).

Who knows where the ABC got their information.

  • It was watching the promos for The Hollowmen TV show and this song was being tagged. It was driving me mad! It sounded like the start of the (dreadful)song Run to You . . .but their I heard a bit more of the song and realised it was from the 1980s and it was The Bats! Good old Flying Nun!

I wonder if The Bats are touring Oz?

  • What a brilliant tune and an outstanding clip- and now gets a rebirthing as the theme music for The Hollowmen..Flying Nun Gold!!

  • I can't believe this song is as old as I am! I was clearly born in the wrong decade.

  • great stuff

  • goold old Bfm, been listening to them for over 20 years now and they still find the epic artists first.

    these guys are pure gold

  • i just saw the bats again the other day. still brilliant!

i remember seeing them at uni and the dux years ago - there were sad old guys you used to see at gigs standing at the back dancing with their hands in their pockets. now i am that sad old guy.

  • Hear that.

  • good song cool vid

  • One of the best POP SONGS ever written. And I know some of them...

  • The Bats are an unstoppable force and the world is a better place for it. "Chicken Bird Run" would be great.

  • far out 5 stars

  • Great song.

    And I like the video.

    It has some nice ideas.

  • I remember this song use to be thrashed on Student Radio on which is known as BFM now.

If you listened to this music back in the time your were considered wierd. I loved it thou, even till today

  • wow what a great song, by a great group

  • Cool Bag Of Rhythm - Right On - WorldwidewelcomE - Viking -

  • Yep the state of Kiwi commercial radio playing Kiwi music was pretty dire in the 1980s. It was until the mid-1990s that things started to change. This song soooo reminds me of my days at Otago University!

  • Remember the state of the NZ radio back then?

There was no way that this great song would even get close to being played on commercial radio.

Student radio yes, anywhere else - they wouldn't touch it.

  • Bats offshoot, Minisnap, are making a video with John Chrisstofells this weekend. Kind-of summery psychadaelic vid for a bouncey song called New Broom

  • they've hardly released one bad song. not the greatest but the most even band on flying nun

  • Good to see this great Christchurch band and music vid by talented Christchurch filmmaker John Chrisstoffels

  • Perhaps the great Flying Nun song. I still can't listen to it without waves of mrmory breaking over me. This and Smoking Her Wings are just divine...

  • I get goosebumps every single time I hear this great song. Probably the best NZ song ever made.

  • The pic quality also is superb. Thanks to whomever put this up. Amazing!

  • still one of the best bands to see live today, they are just pure genius

  • one of the best bands I ever saw live as teenager!!

  • Best electric bass guitar line ever commited to record, bar none.

  • I love the bass in this song. A sort of rolling thing that's all over the place. Lovely :)
