Nice video. I saw a similar technique used at a winter festival in Bavaria. There they split three to four foot logs in the same way and used them as long burning fires for warmth and atmosphere.
Makes me miss Arizona in a way, you can start a fire with a fat girl in corduroys there, here in the NW you need napalm and diligence to start one...nice videos!
I tried this last weekend. I used a pine log about 18 inches long and about 6 inches in diameter. It was a pain to get it to split wide enough for air flow without splitting the log completely apart. But once I got the fire going it really worked well. All I did was boil about 4 cups of water just to see if I could.
The easy short answer is that is is akin to a chimney fire, there is air coming from the cracks near the bottom burring the fuel on the way up causing sort of a blow touch effect
Itis a good way to do it if you are going to be in the same location for a time, it is also useful here in the desert where it is so hot and you just need to cook and no extra heat blasting you.
That is true I will try and abstain when possible, thanks for your comments, that was my granddad's line he would tell people when i came into eat that Steve will eat anything that does not eat him first.

Excellent video. Beats weaving a bunch of green willows to make a grate for your campfire and weighs less than a portable with lantern fuel.

thanks for watching, and if it splits all the way it is ok if you have a way to hold the bottom together like in sandy or loose soil

Thanks for the idea. I've never seen that before and I will definitely have to give it a shot the next time I'm on an excursion.
