shit i miss USA SATURDAY NIGHTMARES, THE HITCHHIKER, USA UP ALL NIGHT. They usually showed THE EXORCIST I AND II, PORKY'S I, II, AND 3. I didn't go to bed til about 5 sunday morning.
When I was a kid (10-15 years old) I LOVED this man. I watched Saturday Nightmares almost every week. I still don't think I appreciated it as much as I could have.
Looking back on this now, I miss it so much. There's NOTHING on, on Saturday nights anymore. Just a bunch of shitty sitcoms and garbage reality TV or cartoons.
Not many networks even play movies anymore, let alone horror films.
I long for the days of when USA Network was king. I'd kill to have this back!
@GialloHorror I fully agree. Thanks to big media giants NBC, we are stuck with junk programs that want us to never question authority and accept moronic predicaments as "reality". I so miss the days when independent companies owned these once awesome cable networks.
Yeah tv used to be so good usa network was awesome then, everything sucks now u get 10 hours or more of law and order a day and stuff like that wowwww funnnnnnnn
Amazing... I haven't seen this intro in 20+ years... This really brings back memories of younger days, spending time with the family watching these on many Saturday nights, when things were a lot easier in this world.
Thanks so much for posting all these and for helping create such a big part of my childhood. :) Saturday Nightmares played a huge part in my love for horror as a kid and i haven;t looked back since. Wasn't there an older intro that showed the outside of the old haunted house in this intro and it was thunderstorming? Cause i'd KILL to see that one if you have it.
It was certainly a better time fellas, I'm grateful to have found a piece of it in these bumpers and shorts here. They have the short film (The Dummy) here also! Was magical to see that again, I just need to find the (Fish & Hook) short and I can die a happy man.
@FuccThatShitNigga But Friday The 13th films were on USA in the same time slot as Saturday Nightmares, I just don't remember if it was SM that hosted them.
Help, does anyone remember a Saturday Nightmares promo or bumper that showed some kind of really scary carousel - like something that showed some very horrific-looking horses?
@1976showtime No they shouldnt. Because knowing how it is today in opposed to the early 90s. Saturday Nightmares would show Twilight and I know what you did last summer movies. Let it rest i say.
@FuccThatShitNigga You have a valid point, which is why I sort of oppose USA bringing back Up All Night too. They would have some corporate magazine-faced dunce hosting real crappy films with tons of annoying ads. Rhonda and Gilbert were very talented and "b-movies" were fun back then, so it's difficult to imagine a new UAN program that would appeal to us who love the original.
The Hitchhiker Episode featured in this intro can be viewed on Hulu. It was the season opener for the second season titled "Love Sounds" as explained in this video. It was pretty good story. Not sure if its available in the 3 available DVDs Volume 1-3 currently being sold. Worthy of checking out. I cannot find any information of the Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode under any of the 4 seasons that it ran from 1985-1989.
thanks for posting this, i remember sitting down with my family watching old horror movies,i just asked my dad what was the name of the show we used to watch back in our old neighborhood, and he said SATURDAY NIGHTMARE! THEY SHOULD BRING THIS BACK ON THE AIR!!
@cheapcape Speaking of "sewage", I remember one Saturday night when USA Saturday Nightmares showed "Slugs: The Movie". It's about these mutated slugs who, for whatever reason, have a hunger for human flesh and it's up to a scientist, a sewer worker, and a health inspector to destroy them. Sounds cool, huh?
I couldn't agree more baddog, I watch these clips on many saturdays evening to remember the good 'ol days of when TV was good. TV has good stuff that is few & far between, & certainly its share of bads. Its unfortunate that this is all there remember, someone should have told us then to invest in blank VHS tapes and get our VCRs ready to record every waking moment of the likes of USA. What about the announcer, his voice was perfect for USA, anybody know his name; still alive?
Thanks, thats pretty interesting. I do know him there. You can't beat the Hitchhikers theme either! I wish the Ray Bradbury DVDs included the original, longer opening theme/segment.
Nothing beats these programs at night, something about the stories, the theme music of both the Nightmares and Hitchhiker, Alfred in B&W- can set the mood for unprecedented TV.
I agree, a great era of cable television, one that we will never see the likes again.
USA Classic is a great idea but its one that I'm sure will be meet by red tape and corporate goons that can't see the value of such great hosts like the Commander, Rhonda, Gilbert and the genius of Ray Bradbury to name but a few. At least bring back Saturday Nightmares, such a awesome opening intro and music almost as great as the Hitchhiker theme to boot!
I know man. It's an impossible dream, but one can always hope right? lol
I guess I'm just really fond of the stuff I grew up with. This type of stuff just brings back so many, great, memories for me, and how I long for television, from 20 years ago.
This day in age, I'd rather watch youtube, than my own television
Wow! This was the first time I saw David Cronenberg's "The Brood". I never made it to the Kinski episode of "The Hitchhiker"! I remember Cronenberg's "Rabid" freaking me out on this program, as well. Such a great era for cable television!
Christ, USA used to be such an awesome channel. The programming now is still high quality, but not my cup of tea like this used to be. This, Night Flight, Up All Night, Commander USA, Cartoon Express, and Forever Knight were all my shows back then. Is there any way I can get these promos/openers/bumpers on a DVD from you? I'd gladly pay for it.
I think The Usa Network, should make a "USA Network Classic" channel, and play some of their older shows, like this, Commander USA, and Up All Night. They could also play shows like "Silk Stalkings", "Make Me Laugh" and "Night Flight"
Man.... Night Flight. That had to be the coolest show after hours back in the 80's. We use to sit up and watch it til 4 or 5 in the morning. I saw somewhere on the web that you could order the episodes. Even if you could now it wouldn't be the same. It would be nice if they would bring it back though.
@baddog7676 Yeah they also had tons of original movies that they showed and cartoon express and friday night fights plus they would be able to show some of the old wrestling shows becuase wwe (wwf back then) is still being shown on usa...theres a lifetime movie network that shows all these old lifetime movies so it would be cool for usa to show all their old movies and shows...but since they merged with NBC i bet they lost a lot of rights to those programs...but well always have the memories : /
@cheapcape Your preaching to the choir my friend...unfortunately our memories of USA are just that. As with everything that was cool back then has to come to an end. No matter how much we say USA sucks now those corporate goons could care less because unbelievably USA is like 1 of the top rated cable channels right now. Just like every other channel i guess what gets rating is showing the same shit 40 times a day. originality and creativity has gone down the tubes since 2000. A shame,
I loved Saturday Nightmares. USA should bring this back. I actually have on tape Day of the Dead when it was shown on this. But I think all the real gore was taken out tho.
I miss this show so much!! Every saturday night when I was a kid was spent in front of the tv watching saturday nightmares. I really wish they made a box set or just brought the show back!!
damn!!! i remember this, me and my grandma used to watch this every weekend. i was dissapointed cuz the opening showed freddy krueger but i never seen a nightmare movie on it....
HAHA! I felt the same way, but I still loved the cheesy movies they used to play. Although, "The Brood" (1979) is a classic.
I have a list of the movies they played on "Saturday Nightmares", and they never did play a "Nightmare on Elm Street" movie. They did show "Friday the 13th" and "Halloween" though
It has been so long. I thought the classic open had some slower, scary music, and had some hand on a book with the old "Saturday Nightmares" logo on it. This and Sammy Terry on WTTV in Indianapolis scared the crap out of me in the 80's.
i grew up in El Centro and this didn't come on untill like around midnight or 1am, the shows were great but some movies they showed were lame. they should bring this back or i like to say...raise it from the grave !!!!
Such a shame - they don't make TV like this anymore! Back then, none of the gore was cut out of the movies either! GREAT video! Thanks for posting! Brings me back to my youth!

Does anyone remember a syndicated 30-minute horror anthology show that ran on the WGN network coming out of Chicago? It was similar to Tales from the Darkside.
The opening title sequence had some sort of monster family sitting around a TV, eating.
I was around 5 too, we were some strong kids watching these things, kids today couldnt handle the things we saw. I miss saturday nightmares. The horror movies today are not even horrors, they are so dumb. You mentioned counterstrike I miss that show too.
Whoo! This was a creepy intro and I loved how the announcer always spoke in an ominous voice. I still remember the Bumper they showed when it was time for commercial break: a dark countryside, a wolf howling and the Saturday Nightmares intro in red!
