All the respect in the world goes to Yuki Nakai. After what he was forced to endure earlier, not a soul would have complained if he would have forfeited, yet he went on to face the best jiu-jitsu man on the planet.
rickson was pretty classy that because nakai sort of accepted a jiu jitsu match, rickson didn''t destroy him with strikes which he easily could have in those positions.
i'm pretty sure that Rickson Gracie wasn't ever capable of destroying anyone with GnP. i don't think i've ever seen him really use any effective GnP in any of his fights. except maybe to fluster the other guy so he could transition.
@HIRE2HACK He was, but Rickson decided not to punch and fight a fair fight because of Yuki's injuries :) so they only fought it grappling/jiu jitsu style :) too bad that Yuki's eye became blind after this Vale Tudo =( a guy who earns a lot of respect =)
@HIRE2HACK he won two fights before this final bout on the night.... Gerard Gordeau eye gauged Nakai on the first fight which later cause him to permanently blind his right eye....very bad illegal tactics by Gerard...
@HIRE2HACK Yeah, it was a tournament event and Nakai had his eye gouged really badly in an earlier fight (he's blind in that eye now). Nakai actually hid the fact he was blind for years after the fight too because he didn't want the sport to get associated with it.

@Rockmaster2112 yeah man, thats realy not what this sport is about. i cand of knew this after seeing the match between yuki and gerard. but that he turned blind i did not know :( buuuu gerard.

@JonesD777 You supposed to know who Rickson really is!! Was(still) simply the best of the Gracie family. He won 2 major titles in Japan, Japan Open 94 and 95. In Bjj tournaments was unbetable.
Nakai - True fighter. He avoided telling people he became blind in his left eye of the fight with piece of shit Gordeau to avoid the sport being cast in a bad light. And that he fought a Gracie after beating up that piece of shit even though his eye was badly injured shows how mouch courage the guy has.
Nakai had a lot of heart. He's the man. He became a student of RIckon's after this fight and is now a black belt under RIckson and runs a jiu jitsu federation in Japan. Nakai also gave Shinya Aoki his bjj black belt.
the japanese invented jiu jitsu not the brazilians. So you should be thanking the japanese instead. Kimura still owned Gracie even though the Gracies claimed they added so much more technique. the japanese in my opinion are the best grapplers in the world.
@iMaKeUsHoOk His name is Yuki Nakai and is the Mentor and Teacher to Dream Fighter Shinya Aoki.. His style of fighting is called Nanatei Judo where they do more ground fighting.. But after loosing to Rickson, Yuki was impressed with his technique he took up BJJ and is now a Black Belt in the art
..It's only idiots that ask who'd win out of Fedor/Rickson, 2 different eras of MMA, it is the same with people who ask who'd win out of Rickson/Bruce Lee, 2 different eras of MMA, you can only really be judged against the fighters of your time.
Every other fan of every other fighter, talked the same shit about Rickson, until their fighter faced him in the ring. He shut everyone's mouth one at a time, the old fashioned way, by kickiing their asses.

@melittamomo, That's just silly, man. I went to a Relson Gracie BJJ school and everyone loves the Gracies, except for a few clowns. Don't be so nationalistic.
@44rumblefish hi.sorry.just im mad caus i see the deferent betwen brasilien atlethts and usa athlets . brasilien it so calm modest the dont show the power the respect others . look at how is they......... and look at the other . in every things schow the power in every movies also.......... we are not in transformer 2. and the stil every things. we are all one. im not brasilien i lived there and im in germany now and i see the deferennt
Yea, I agree that many American athletes often get carried away and can be disrespectful towards their opponents some times. I don't like it when that happens, either. Unfortunately, we can't change the world. We can only change the way we react to it. There is good and bad everywhere.
Yuki did not come for nothing to this end. I remember that he was dubbed in VT as Daredevil of Giants. Went to the final proving that size does not matter and had the honor to address one of the world! Any lutadorzinho go straight jabs to the face of the punishment big Japanese. I recognize that he had no chance, but its worth the fight is to observe the honor, discipline and clean technique of the great Rickson. Long life to this kind of fighter.
You are looking at one of them. And actually, this is the first fighter I have personally seen Rickson fight who was smaller than him... That's not to say that there weren't others, but this is the first one I've seen. Remember the psychological advantage Mike Tyson had over his opponents because of his rep in the early years. Let's be fair here. I've rolled with Relson Gracie at a training event at his school.; Relson was in his early 50s and hung over. He cleaned everyone's clock.
Not to disrespect Yuki or anything, he is a good fighter, but Rickson could have taken him out a lot quicker, Rickson was just messing around and drawing out the fight because this was the last match. Rickson was very confident he would win, especially once he has the mounted position, after that he seems to be prolonging the fight to make it look interesting for the spectators.
yes he was cnfident, he knew he was going to win anyway, but maybe becaus of the fact that yuki was done, he had fought two humongous guys and wasted all of his energy. in this tournament all my respect goes to him, and then to rickson, for not giving up under two guillotines in his first fight... two great warriors, one with disadvantage in the bout, i thnk they respected each other enough, and even mounted, yuki is not easy.
he definitely took it easy on nakai, but nakai wasnt trying to beat rickson either,he just was too respectful of rickson. He wouldnt have won anyway but he reall had no killer instinct here.
@Chevalier765 its a simple scarf hold, BJJ teaches multiple escapes from this position but not to much offence other than punch the guy in the face, non the less im sure he didnt feel uncomfortable for one secound on the ground during this fight
This is the Vale Tudo tournament, there is no resting or stopping, you fight and fight untill you lose or win the tournament. He had to save energy, You say Yuki came all hurt to the fight, because of his previous fight. Rickson didn't put all his energy on this fight because Yuki is no match to him size and weight wise. He could've won on the first two minutes if you learn from his fighting history.
if rickson takes u to the ground, there s nothin u can do...he s a legend, u can see gracie legacy in today MMA ...without em it wouldn t be an evolution in martial arts...
@Calfullanas rickson and his family did change fighting forever but the arent that great at fighting, I doubt they would even beat the UFC fighters today that have mediocre ground skill, fighting has evolved sadly the gracies havent :(
I agree with you on some of your points, but current Gracie family members are evolving. Even Royce was training different styles at the end of his career, They are a proud family who contributed a great deal to what we now know as MMA. The shamrocks were terrific in the early days, and I mean that. Ken beat the great Bas Rutten 2 times! Now that's something! Yet, I know of no other single family who continues to breed fighters like the Gracies. Not arguing, just throwing out a perspective
THESE MATCHES ARE A JOKE, NO STRIKING AND KICKING AND STAND UP GRAPPLING, ALL GROUND GAME. ANYONE WHO IS SKILLED IN ALL FOUR RANGES OF FIGHTING WOULD EASILY KICK THE SHIT OUT OF RICKSON. You have to learn to strike in every angle with a combination of kicks, throws, locks, elbows and ground fighting and be able to COUNTER, COUNTER COUNTER. all these fights of RICKSON IS GAY and stupid. HIS OPPONENTS looks like they're all on drugs and someone who was JUST PUT THERE.
why you gotta hate on rickson? anyone can fight standing up throwing punches and kicks from angles. but can they fight on the ground? it is actually skills man. rickson is skillful on the ground. thats his game. if he fights on the ground he has a better advantage of winning. a stand up fighter will fight standing. therefore he has a advantage on standing.
he really was a gentlemen, a real martial artist. at 3:18 you can see him contemplating to punch him in the face but he decided just to win this as harmlessly as possible.
You can see Rickson really being a gentlemen, seeing that the guy is already badly hurt so he doesn't bother punching him too he just tries to end the fight with pure jiu jitsu, a simple painless submission (if he taps right away). He knew all the conditions that you guys are stating he knew it was a mismatch, but he had to do his job. In my opinion the best BJJ fighter ever. (notice how I saw BJJ!) lol dont crucify me.
yeah its funny he fought 2 other guys who outweighed by like almost 100+ pounds and the only real mismatch was against Rickson not because of size but because of skill
True. Also, because Nakai had had some mad tough fights just before this one (You can see the swelling around his eyes and nose) and Rickson had some relatively easy ones.
He was beaten by size, weight, skill and the condition both fighters where in when they stepped into the ring.
i used to have the Vale Tudo Japan card and you should really see the fights. Nakai fought Gerard Gordeau for 27 minutes enduring stomps and eye gouges and fought an even bigger man who was about 100 pounds heavier for 15 more minutes, Nakai is a real warrior
I would agree Rickson hasnt faced the caliber of todays UFC fighters . But to say he's not a great BJJ guy is not true . Royce has said Rickson is much !! better than he he is . Rickson is also better than Renzo and Rolyler . I dont think he could take Fedor . But i certainly think he could hold his own against any JJ fighter out there . The guys a master at that art
Rickson is a master of gi BJJ, not no gi.Rickson didn't face high caliber fighters back in the day; he even dodged the Gracie killer, and for good reason. Royce, Renzo, Rickson and Royler might be more famous Gracies, but they are not the best Gracies at BJJ; Roger and Rolles would destroy any of them, Kron Gracie will be there soon, if he isn't already. Royler and Renzo won ADCC back when Tito Ortiz was good enough to place, they would get wrecked by the upper echelon of no gi grapplers today.
its crazy how much of a difference a gi can make. it took Rickson long enough to sub Nakai, where if there was a Gi involved he probably gotten the job done in less than half the time
The art is developing and it is much more refined now and distributed than it was back in the day. In fact, the world wouldn't be training jiu jitsu if it weren't for the likes of the early Gracies. Your if's mean nothing!
@sirmiklo no mma fighter from today would submit Rickson tho.. because most mma fighters jits is weak and watered down. There are a few legit bjj black belts in mma but then there are mma bjj black belts...im a blue belt under Royce and have submitted pro mma fighters that are supposivly brown belts and so on...It's a shame. Anyways Rickson is the fucking man lol.
@sk8yodog53 that could be that bjj isnt their base alot of the time, theres guys like maia and aoki and bj penn who have awesome bjj cuz its where the started in martial arts, while alot of kickboxers and wrestlers just take it up when they get into mma. and yes rickson is a legit badass as is royce....
@utarian7 fighters of today maybe training BJJ but a lot of the technique is getting sloppy and not taught as well. I mean there are fighters that have good technique and good ground game but Rickson would with out a doubt be most of the fighters of today in the MMA world today.
Lotta honor to both fighters for this fight. Rickson coulda easily ground and pounded the injured and smaller fighter, but refused to strike. Yuki still fought despite being hurt. talk about guts.
World's greatest jiu-jitsu fighter? Do you actually believe the stuff that comes out of Rickson's mouth? He isn't even the best Gracie out there, much less the best BJJ grappler.
with all due respect, I have trained with a lot of Gracies. And all of them, I mean "all", said Rickson was the best out there, nobody could deal with his technique and power.
Also I've trained a lot in Europe where I met a lot of Brazilian guys, and in Brazil Rickson is god!; everybody respects him, not matter if they are from the Gracies, Carlos, Alliance, etc... all of them agree Rickson is the best.
He is not well respected in USA, but i Brazil and Japan he is considered a legend...
I'm not disputing Rickson's gi grappling skills, but Rickson is not on the level of the guys who place at ADCC. For the same reason Rickson refused to fight any good fighters in MMA (to boast an undefeated record, and claim that he is the best in the world, without actually having to prove it), Rickson has never entered ADCC. It would be one thing for Rickson to claim to be the best grappler, which is still ridiculous, but to say he can beat Fedor, and armbar Lesnar is just laughably stupid.
Nakai eye is blind now btw. He never let anyone know either because he didnt want the sport to be damaged over it. Supposedly he never let anyone know his eye was really blind for over 5 years.
It was Gerard Gordeau and it was pretty brutal foot stomps to Yukis eye and cheek. Love the fact that he didnt quit and went through with the whole tournament.
All the respect in the world goes to Yuki Nakai. After what he was forced to endure earlier, not a soul would have complained if he would have forfeited, yet he went on to face the best jiu-jitsu man on the planet.

Who is the Japanese fighter? What style did he use? He looked like a grappler too.
iMaKeUsHoOk 1 year ago
@iMaKeUsHoOk His name is Yuki Nakai and is the Mentor and Teacher to Dream Fighter Shinya Aoki.. His style of fighting is called Nanatei Judo where they do more ground fighting.. But after loosing to Rickson, Yuki was impressed with his technique he took up BJJ and is now a Black Belt in the art

@melittamomo,
Yea, I agree that many American athletes often get carried away and can be disrespectful towards their opponents some times. I don't like it when that happens, either. Unfortunately, we can't change the world. We can only change the way we react to it. There is good and bad everywhere.
Peace.

Long life to this kind of fighter.

what great fighters did rickson go up against?
shawtyjo85 1 year ago
You are looking at one of them. And actually, this is the first fighter I have personally seen Rickson fight who was smaller than him... That's not to say that there weren't others, but this is the first one I've seen. Remember the psychological advantage Mike Tyson had over his opponents because of his rep in the early years. Let's be fair here. I've rolled with Relson Gracie at a training event at his school.; Relson was in his early 50s and hung over. He cleaned everyone's clock.
Peace!
44rumblefish 1 year ago
luthieria 1 year ago
Not to disrespect Yuki or anything, he is a good fighter, but Rickson could have taken him out a lot quicker, Rickson was just messing around and drawing out the fight because this was the last match. Rickson was very confident he would win, especially once he has the mounted position, after that he seems to be prolonging the fight to make it look interesting for the spectators.
mayatiita1 2 years ago
yes he was cnfident, he knew he was going to win anyway, but maybe becaus of the fact that yuki was done, he had fought two humongous guys and wasted all of his energy. in this tournament all my respect goes to him, and then to rickson, for not giving up under two guillotines in his first fight... two great warriors, one with disadvantage in the bout, i thnk they respected each other enough, and even mounted, yuki is not easy.
blackbarro 2 years ago
You are right, in everything you said. A lot of respect to both fighters.

CDbythecross 2 years ago
This is the Vale Tudo tournament, there is no resting or stopping, you fight and fight untill you lose or win the tournament. He had to save energy, You say Yuki came all hurt to the fight, because of his previous fight. Rickson didn't put all his energy on this fight because Yuki is no match to him size and weight wise. He could've won on the first two minutes if you learn from his fighting history.

yuki nakai went permanently blind in his right eye after the tournament but he kept it secret for a while to protect the integrity of the sport.

Calfullanas 2 years ago
@Calfullanas rickson and his family did change fighting forever but the arent that great at fighting, I doubt they would even beat the UFC fighters today that have mediocre ground skill, fighting has evolved sadly the gracies havent :(

@hazard2000 not agree...anyway the gracies fought pure valetudo,
Calfullanas 2 years ago
I agree with you on some of your points, but current Gracie family members are evolving. Even Royce was training different styles at the end of his career, They are a proud family who contributed a great deal to what we now know as MMA. The shamrocks were terrific in the early days, and I mean that. Ken beat the great Bas Rutten 2 times! Now that's something! Yet, I know of no other single family who continues to breed fighters like the Gracies. Not arguing, just throwing out a perspective
Peace

Uzu70 2 years ago
why you gotta hate on rickson? anyone can fight standing up throwing punches and kicks from angles. but can they fight on the ground? it is actually skills man. rickson is skillful on the ground. thats his game. if he fights on the ground he has a better advantage of winning. a stand up fighter will fight standing. therefore he has a advantage on standing.

(notice how I saw BJJ!) lol dont crucify me.

malmokber 2 years ago
yeah its funny he fought 2 other guys who outweighed by like almost 100+ pounds and the only real mismatch was against Rickson not because of size but because of skill
Dereksag14 2 years ago
True. Also, because Nakai had had some mad tough fights just before this one (You can see the swelling around his eyes and nose) and Rickson had some relatively easy ones.
He was beaten by size, weight, skill and the condition both fighters where in when they stepped into the ring.
Mismatch.
malmokber 2 years ago
i used to have the Vale Tudo Japan card and you should really see the fights.

The guys a master at that art
sj1778 2 years ago
Rickson is a master of gi BJJ, not no gi.Rickson didn't face high caliber fighters back in the day; he even dodged the Gracie killer, and for good reason. Royce, Renzo, Rickson and Royler might be more famous Gracies, but they are not the best Gracies at BJJ; Roger and Rolles would destroy any of them, Kron Gracie will be there soon, if he isn't already. Royler and Renzo won ADCC back when Tito Ortiz was good enough to place, they would get wrecked by the upper echelon of no gi grapplers today.
RebelWrestler45 2 years ago
its crazy how much of a difference a gi can make. it took Rickson long enough to sub Nakai, where if there was a Gi involved he probably gotten the job done in less than half the time
Dereksag14 2 years ago
"if rickson faced todays fighters...
BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH
The art is developing and it is much more refined now and distributed than it was back in the day. In fact, the world wouldn't be training jiu jitsu if it weren't for the likes of the early Gracies. Your if's mean nothing!

are you fucking retarded? i made a comment on how Rickson would have destroyed Nakai quickly if Gi's were on.
by the way Rickson would get demolished by todays fighters.
Dereksag14 2 years ago
@utarian7 THANK YOU any ufc fighter today could probably go back in time and win ufc 1, because back then it was art vs art not mma
sirmiklo 1 year ago
@sirmiklo no mma fighter from today would submit Rickson tho.. because most mma fighters jits is weak and watered down. There are a few legit bjj black belts in mma but then there are mma bjj black belts...im a blue belt under Royce and have submitted pro mma fighters that are supposivly brown belts and so on...It's a shame. Anyways Rickson is the fucking man lol.
sk8yodog53 1 year ago
@sk8yodog53 that could be that bjj isnt their base alot of the time, theres guys like maia and aoki and bj penn who have awesome bjj cuz its where the started in martial arts, while alot of kickboxers and wrestlers just take it up when they get into mma. and yes rickson is a legit badass as is royce....
sirmiklo 1 year ago
@sirmiklo you nailed that one! lol I love watching aoki and maia fight...
sk8yodog53 1 year ago
@utarian7 fighters of today maybe training BJJ but a lot of the technique is getting sloppy and not taught as well. I mean there are fighters that have good technique and good ground game but Rickson would with out a doubt be most of the fighters of today in the MMA world today.

World's greatest jiu-jitsu fighter? Do you actually believe the stuff that comes out of Rickson's mouth? He isn't even the best Gracie out there, much less the best BJJ grappler.
RebelWrestler45 2 years ago
with all due respect, I have trained with a lot of Gracies.
He is not well respected in USA, but i Brazil and Japan he is considered a legend...
firulaisjj 2 years ago
I'm not disputing Rickson's gi grappling skills, but Rickson is not on the level of the guys who place at ADCC. For the same reason Rickson refused to fight any good fighters in MMA (to boast an undefeated record, and claim that he is the best in the world, without actually having to prove it), Rickson has never entered ADCC. It would be one thing for Rickson to claim to be the best grappler, which is still ridiculous, but to say he can beat Fedor, and armbar Lesnar is just laughably stupid.
