What the hell r u talking about? If a player stands offside then he has to come back onside before playing the ball. Astle was offside twice in this move and u are the only person alive who feels that this goal was good! The only change in the rules, today, is that a goal can be scored even if another player is offside but not interfering with play. i am a soccer ref so if u disagree I'll give u the red card myself!

No pass involved initially (it was a block that was ran on to) and Leeds fans 40 or so years later still can't work it out, just like they couldn't on the day. No disrespect, i'm not talking about all Leeds fans. But for the rest of them - it's just ridiculous you don't get this.
You have to pass the ball to have an offside decision given. Brown took it on himself. Imagine the state of the game if you blew up every time a player was in an offside position, then or now! Also, not that it matters, the video says it was Astle who was lurking "offside". Not true, Astle is the next player over. That man is Colin Suggett. Terrible points made by Barrie Davies as well. He should have been sacked from the BBC.

both billy bremner and gary sprake said, many years later, that the ref was right. to clarify the interfering issue, for those who are saying it wasn't part of the rules back then- it was, and you are wrong (i know, i was there). and in this passage of play it is not relevant anyway, because as some have said, the ball was not passed, it was carried forward by the same player hence no-one is offside.
Isn't it obvious, the player who wins the ball runs forward with the ball and doesn't pass it to the 'potentially' offside player, hence he is not offside at that point in the old rules or the new. Read the laws of the game and it clearly states 'when the ball is played forward to another player'
The rules have changed since 1971. Back then, if a ball was played into the opponents half of the pitch and someone who wasn't necessarily interfering with play is in an offside position, it was counted as offside and the defending team were given a free kick.
yes, rLUFCa is right- the rules were very different back then, offside was offside whether or not there was interference, but in that incident he was both clearly offside and interfering! You didn't need to be a Leeds supporter (i certainly wasn't) to know it was a terrible error.
How did he interfere? He wasn't passed to, he didn't block someone making a tackle, he didn't touch the ball. The West Brom player made a tackle, the ball deflected off him TO HIMSELF, he didn't pass to Astle or in anyway include him in the move at the point in which you are disputing. Under the rules of the game, he's not offside.
@rLUFCa That's not correct! If a player was standing offside back in 1970,but not interfering with play , then play would continue and only to be stopped if this player was passed the ball or restricted the view of the keeper. The only time a free kick would be given is if a goal had been scored but another player was standing in an offside position. i am a county ref so I know all the rules.
that rule wasnt in effect then - the keeper could pick up the ball in a backpass - microwaves hadnt been invented and the internet wasnt around then either.
I heard Eddie Gray talk about this incident on a LUFC related doc, and he said that he felt both then and now, that the goal was a good one.

when i say our first pitch invasion i mean in the negative 'whole crowd runs on in disgust at decision' way, not a few people celebrating.
