You may have seen comments on here intimating that Mary Lou only won because other countries boycotted the Olympics. What those who say that do not know or perhaps chose not to recall is that Retton was one of the actual favorites going in because she had already defeated all the best gymnasts in the world in prior competitions. She had the best floor and vault in the world at the time. All Retton had to do to win any gymnastics event was to not fall off the aparatus. Sorry if the truth hurts.

I have to be honest, Ecaterina Szabo has always been my favourite gymnast of all time, so I was very disappointed that this tiny American girl came and took the overall gold away from her at the 1984 Olympics. However, there is no denying the brilliance of Mary-Lou's all round performance,and her bright and bubbly personality! Amazing woman, can't believe she's in her 40's now. She looks great!

Even on top of that, it took a fall from Szabo to allow Retton to get to the top, including the home scoring advantage. Retton is a total joke within the gymnastics community. The real gymnastics competition in '84 took place at Olomouc.
