what is wrong with people her nose was never an issue i dont get why they wanted her to get a nose job...she wouldnt be so beautiful without that lovely nose... i get so confused and her voice is so lovely too. oh barbara!
1968 was an incredibly horrific year. Martin Luther King Jr. assassinated. Riots all over the country as a result. Senator Bobby Kennedy assassinated. The US ship USS Pueblo overtaken by North Korea. The Soviet Union invades Czechoslovakia. The Tet offensive in Vietnam that set the war back. Riots in France. Student riots and a massacre in Mexico City. The Democratic
National Convention in Chicago overrun with protests and police rioting.
BUT remember, some guy did Barbara then! Amen to that.
@yowzephyr Well, this song is about the early stages of love rather than sex.
Also, I don't think singing or enjoying this song means that you are ignoring the serious events of 1968 (if that is what you are implying). Barbra certainly did not ignore those events. If you enjoy a song from the early 1940s, it does not mean that you are ignoring World War II and the Holocaust.
@ChicagoSouthDan No, no, I was not at all implying that Barbra was ignoring those events. I'm sure she didn't ignore them. All I was trying to say is that Barbara was at least one of the good things that was happening in 1968.
ChicagoDan- I actually didn't tell my family about my hitchhiking adventure until many years later. That and a few other confessions kinda shocked them but I guess they were happy that I made it through my teen years without a single felony. :)
@wiguy3 Since I am 59, turning 60 this year, so I am a couple of years younger than you. I was thinking of going from Chicago to Simon and Garfunkel's concert in Central Park, but I opted not to. I am sorry I did not go. It might have been an experience and I would not have had to hitchhike :-).
1967.....I was just 17, living in the midwest and I heard Barbra was going to do a free concert in Central Park. I didn't ahve the fare to get to New York si I hitchhiked. I made it in 3 rides. Yes, I was lucky. Made it to the park and was about 6 blocks away but I remember every note. It was the best night of my life at that point.
No matter what she sings, she never fails to hit the mark. The hairs on the back of my neck always rise and, I'm transported to a wonderful place. No one comes near!
I love Heather Headley's version, but no one hits the correct interpretation as well as Babs. She gets the pure innocence of this lyric and completely NAILS it.
I can't believe we get to see these amazing videos! For FREE! OK. Please nobody ruin it (I hope I didn't). She's the inspiration to all the best female singers today, no doubt. The glamor of this event points out a time when going out some place special for a great event meant dressing up, actually wearing clothes that at least mostly clothed you, and it meant living dreams, beautiful ones, nothing dark about them, just hope-filled memories.
OMG - just too perfect for words. So love Barbra Streisand - she is magnificent. Heavens, what a voice to be in possession of - wouldn't that be grand? All so perfect. Thank you so very much for this post.
No living female singer comes close to Barbra Streisand, "America's First Lady of Song," a title that was used for the great Ella Fitzgerald. I bestow this title now on Barbra Streisand! She deserves it now, much as Ella did while she was alive! I find Streisand an amazing performer- here at age 26, and even now, at age 68! She is an enduring National Treasure! I am awed by her singing/passion and overall abilities-still after decades of being a fan! Keep singing Barbra!
Barbra in 1968 was at the height of her incredible vocal abilities! I love Barbra at age 26, right here (she was born in 1942- same year I was born) and I love her singing now that she is 68 years young! Barbra is a National Treasure! Her performances are- well - breathtaking! Amazing even to me, and I have been an avid fan of hers for decades!
She is now "America's First Lady of Song," a title that was given to Ella Fitzgerald.
I bestow it upon Barbra Streisand, a living legend! No female sing
this performance cannot be faulted. It is one of the greatest ever captured on film and we should consider ourselves damn lucky that the internet exists and that in all of time and humanity we ourselves are privileged to experience it!
Amazing! Not only did Barbra have an outstanding voice then (and now) but she did what no musical artists do much nowadays...she acted as she sang. You can't help but be caught up into the song because of all the feelings that she portrays at the same time.
Es una de las mejores voces que jamaz se a escuchado es una latima que la musica de hoy en dia sea lo que es,,,,,,, una corrupcion total sin sentimiento alguno ni sentido........cantantes muchos artistas barbra,,,,,,,,,
I think maybe after all these years, this is one of my very all time, favorite songs... I first saw her on Broadway, then through all those fabulous specials... "my name is Barbra and 'color me were just spectacular television, and she told everyone way back then that she knew exactly who she was and what she was doing and it was all very stylish and complicated... but at the end of the day, it's the simple, winsome magic she so gently makes of this that says everything....
unbelievable,,,,,,,,,,,, she's the number one American Idol of all time in my humble opinion......thank you Barbra for all the years of incredible enjoyment in hearing your voice. Much love to you.
tell you what, start saving your money so that if she ever decides to give another concert you can be there because you're beyond right... I was and am one lucky thing to have shared in the kind of magical spell that woman casts whenever she opens up her mouth.
I was a kid in bklyn NY when I heard her sing for the first time, and I was Blown out of the water! NY radio stations said Streisand IS Broadway She was then and Still is . Though she is older now She's still got it.
This is Barbra Streisand at her best. She grabs you then pulls you into the song as you hang on through the turns until the thrilling end. She was ahead of her time and timeless.
Where are the voices today? The voice with smarts and color and soul? She had it all, and if you weren't around in those days, you missed out BIG time....
@SuperBnichols you're kidding? Judaism is only a religion. Look it up. How do you explain Whoopi being jewish? She converted. And as far as "looking jewish", Judaism started in the Mediterranean area over 4,000 years ago and people in the Mediterranean area have a certain look no matter what religion. That's like saying Christianity is a race.
@Sixtiesfreak There is a jewish gene. There is a tribe in africa that has the jewish gene, look it up on the internet. That makes it a race, there are certain diseases that only jews get like bergers disease. Religions dont have genes. Im not putting them down.
@SuperBnichols When someone says that someone is "very Jewish looking", as you did earlier, it is usually meant as an insult, which is why you got a negative reaction. Hedy Lamar's real name was Heidi Kestler, she was Jewish, and she was one of the most beautiful ladies to ever appear in movies. However, people seldom say "She's very Jewish looking, just like the beautiful Hedy Lamar." It is good that did not mean to insult anyone and you were not putting anyone down.
@illinoisjoy im really sorry, i don't mean to be a drag. Its Barbra. Im honestly her biggest fan, it really annoys me when someone writes her name wrong.
Abounding! The singer in complete command of all her remarkable powers. The timbre, the range, the dynamics--but most of all, the instinctive ability to enact the song. Always watch this in awe.
@cafemartini Too bad orvgg decided not to answer you, since it was a fair question, although expressed in an offensive way to some folks, with the use of the F word. It's a fair question because I had never heard of her and I would guess most people in the United States have not heard of her. She is an Italian singer, born in 1940, who was popular in the 60s and 70s in Europe and South America. I don't think she sold much in the United States. I found her with a search on "Mina singer".
@ChicagoSouthDan To continue, I listened to a couple of her songs, one when she was 27 in 1967 and one in 72, when she was 32. She has an okay voice, but nothing to compare to Steisand in range or vocal quality. I guess if orvgg or someone wants to refer me to a song that does equal Steisand's range or vocal quality, they can let me know. I am not a streisand fanatic; I just don't think Mina is even close.
thank you Violino11 for uploading this...she is absolutely the best...she sings with such conviction...goosh I wasn't even born when performed this...but I love her brilliant voice...
Barbra's about 25 yrs old in this performance. Where is there a voice like this today? What young woman of 25 in today's Pop Music could possibly match the range and class of Barbra's voice?
@Thighco not only in range but n dynamics reflections and reaching the depth of ones deepest chamber of ones Heart!!!!! Now they are just manufacturing Designer Brand Singers with Performance Art .. No Star Power Like Streisand or Shirley Bassey!!! xoxoxoxo EVER!
Barbara is one of the greats and I truly appreciate all her performances even though this was not my generation but rather my mothers. However there are many today that can match the range and class. Music style has changed though and therefore many who lived through listening to this generation can't see that.
@eagle0924 On the positive side, you are not one of those younger people who says that Barbra stinks, etc. The problem for me is in your use of the word "many". I do not worship her or any singer and I know that styles change, but I do not agree that there are "many" today who can match her range and class.
This is a great live performance, but it you REALLY want to hear Barbra belt this one, listen to the studio recording on her first Greatest Hits album.
I feel so happy whenever I listen to Barbra. She is so wonderful

Barbra's about 25 yrs old in this performance. Where is there a voice like this today? What young woman of 25 in today's Pop Music could possibly match the range and class of Barbra's voice?
Thighco 2 years ago 34

Classic unique beauty back then.
She really had the look in the 60's.
She looks good today but more conventional.

@MaLizGa Yea i hate that too. Most likely jealous. I have loved her since I was a kid,my mother and grandmother are fans as well

Her make up is impeccable.
She's beautiful.
But that doesn't even compare to her talent.
The woman has it all.
Acting, Singing, Directing WHILE looking damn good.
Babs can do anything & everything.

This is a great live performance, but it you REALLY want to hear Barbra belt this one, listen to the studio recording on her first Greatest Hits album.

She sings this song better than anyone else - in fact, few vocalists even attempted it after Barbra did it - what would be the point?

too theatrical... she should've sung it more straight forward as opposed to all those little hums and "pops" and coos
