I was very disappointed when I first saw this movie because it was supposed to represent the story of soldiers in the war. It does not do a good job of representing them or being truthful at all. What a shame. I was in Vietnam during the war, by the way, and I saw American soldiers doing incredible jobs under trying conditions because their country asked them to. That, I don't think, has ever been adequately covered in books and movies, though the stories and movie about LZ Xray are close.
@acblueeagle Um... my uncle served with Stone in Vietnam and said the film was very representative of his experiences there... I'm sorry that it wasn't representative of your experiences there. Thank you for your great sacrifice, much love and respect to you.
Platoon and Full Metal Jacket are awesome....I'm sorry but while Hamburger Hill may be more realistic, the acting in it SUCKED and there were so many more things I could say were bad about that film. Yeah, but you see all of the ''cheesy'' dialouge in full metal jacket is intentional. All of it comes in the 2nd act, before the sniper sequence the 3rd act.And maybe kubrick got a technical point wrong, but using last names is ''cheesy''?That doesn't even make sense. And ''digging''?Ha, the movie is filled with cheesy lines! I loved Platoon but Oliver Stone had one thing wrong. He said that America learned nothing from the Vietnam War. Are you fucking kidding me Oliver? The mistakes that America made in Vietnam should be viewed as a lesson
@vinmass123 Whether or not there was a distinct leader that the United States wanted to oust in Vietnam is not the issue. The issue is that the United States invaded, and occupied a country for basically no reason. What was the reason for Iraq again? 9/11? No, that wasn't it. WMD's? Nope, that wasn't it. Uhh, removing Saddam? Nope that can't be it because he was removed in 2003 and American troops are still there. So why are troops in Iraq?
This film is an incredible, raw account of a human tragic event. It evokes such sadness when human beings especially on the same side, are pitted against each other. Fellow man vs Fellow man. Oliver's award is rightly deserved.
Yeah it seems like it was pointless war and for what and why?
Powerful storytelling of brutality and the human side that made me understand at the end of the movie. Brilliant most rightfully dissevered the Oscars it picked up
the deer hunter is my fave vietnam film but platoon is my #2 'nam film. i'm glad oliver won for this one, too bad the movies he made since were really not that good, but that's just my opinion

Love the way beautiful Liz Taylor says the winner's name: "Oliver Stone!". Puts her heart in that shout!
hivernales 1 year ago 9
"Platoon" was the first part of what turned out to be a dense trilogy. Oliver Stone never repeated himself. True artist and great story teller.

It's obvious that some internet users with a political agenda are here only to badmouth Oliver Stone and his movie "Platoon". Talent-free assholes back to their usual business.
Oliver Stone is a great film director and Platoon is regarded as a landmark movie. Get over it dudes and get a life!

@stanleyKubrik11 "Apocalypse Now" does NOT portray what was really going on in Vietnam during the war.

I loved Platoon but Oliver Stone had one thing wrong. He said that America learned nothing from the Vietnam War. Are you fucking kidding me Oliver? The mistakes that America made in Vietnam should be viewed as a lesson

Iraq? who was the Vietnamese equivalent to Saddam Hussein? again my ass
vinmass123 1 year ago
