A great instrument and talent; amazingly handsome and fit for what has become a visual art more than ever, but his technique has slipped. He is pushing and his breath is very audible, showing he is on the bottom, not on top in the giro. If he goes on like this he will develop physical problems. Compare his technique when younger. Pavarotti followed the same path. Even so he is wonderful.
the first time i saw this, i thought it was spectacular. Now that I watch it, I see he's making a lot of technical mistakes. High breaths and his tongue is in the back of his throat. His supposed to be a flat is so tense that he's pushing sharp. This is a meh performance.
@browbrandon I see what you are saying, but with the awards and reputation this guy boasts it hard to argue technique. Even jesus had an off day I'm willing to bet...
@Wally773MTG I honestly believe he was really great when he was younger, but now, he's got the baritone bark and has lost a lot of what he had...I definitely don't think he could be compared to Jesus though...there are better baritones
@browbrandon fair enough haha. could you do me the favor of naming me some? I'm a young baritone in training, new to the opera/ classical vocal scene and am always looking for inspiration. Right now my favorite has to be Schlusnus, but he's not known for opera and thats what my teacher is mostly teaching through now, aside from TONS of vocalizes and exercises of course haha (that's why I looked up this video, I just started working on Avant de... at my last lesson)
Sorry, not impressed by his top at all. Too much pushing and heavy breathing. He's obviously working hard. Listen to the 1941 Leonard Warren version and you'll hear this aria sung light years from he DH performance. I'm sure all of you will start circling my camp, but it's my opinion.
Nunca me termina de convencer Dmitri. Me parece que es una voz que exagera el rol que ejecuta. Sin embargo, es una muy buena voz. Quizás esté mejor en obras rusas.
Beautiful singing, beautiful line. Perhaps a bit too self-important. But that's the character of Valentin: he's an asshole. The cadenza is a bit out of style. It's like suddenly Verdi. But, in a concert, that will do.
Not the biggest Hvorostovsky fan, but I thought that was spectacular. Actually, I sing this with a cadenza that has an Ab too (approved by Richard Stilwell, although he told me it was unnecessary as there are enough high notes in the song already lol) but it is slightly different... I never actually heard anyone else put an Ab at the end. LoL Love it though... I think if you've got the gas for it at the end, go for it!
THAT my friends is how a high baritone is supposed to sound...no "bulking up" in the middle voice...very long legato line...amazing...the voice opens up on top, just the way its supposed to in that rep!
That A flat in that last cadenza is amazing, not totally in the style but amazing! Does anyone know if he is the only baritone that performs it that way?
DAMN! Except for the Italian, baroque, bel canto cadenza, which is totally out of style for French literature, he sang the HELL out of this! Again, DAMN!
The whole thing is utterly amazing, but that cadenza was totally uncalled for... Completely out of style. Reminds me of Beverly Sills's cadenze... just because you have the top notes it doesn't mean you have to seize every single chance to show them. Nevertheless, Dmitri remains as my favourite contemporary baritone :)
Just Spectacular!!!!! BRAVO!

Of course anyone could sing like this if they didn't have to breathe. I think those evil Russian scientists must have grafted in a third lung for him.
Even Lisitsian didn't have this much breath.

A wonderful example of legato singing. Just listen to how long each vowel really can be extended within every syllable.

I prefer Hampson his interpretation. It's more refined.

cornificius22vain 3 years ago
Singers that lower their larinx ussually make that noise. You hear it sometimes on Caruso recordings, Bjorling, Domingo and others.

haha that's funny but there is some truth in what you say, though it's exagerated.

I agree, singers like Cecilia Bartolli and Dmitri Hvorostovsky are great 'recording artists.'

Prefer the finish as written, but this is an amazing performance. It's difficult to sing the song having listened to that! He's a bit good.
