The science budget shouldn't be cut in favour of anything. (It's what makes progressive nations possible)
The war should be scaled down to pay for malaria treatment, not scientific ambition and discovery.
Does Aston Kutcher value the discovery of life on Mars? No, because he's completely uneducated in the possibility that life may exist outside the Hollywood studio.
Americas military budget 2010 (the one year alone) : 683 Billion dollars
Mars exploration rover entire total cost of primary mission : 820 Million dollars.
In essence we could send the greatest robots in the world to Mars twice a day, every day for the whole year and still have enough money to prop up every public service of half a dozen states and be able to do the whole thing again next year if science had Americas military budget.
Ashton apparently has no idea how the budgets of NASA and the war(s) compare. The total budget of NASA for the entire 50+ years of the program is not even close to what the Iraq war costs. Besides the technologies developped (for space-flight) are the personal/ business-appliances of tomorrow.

Haha brilliant! I completely agree with you on this, honestly. I didn't say the wars we are fighting were a higher priority. Well ending them is but that won't be happening anytime soon. The lack of science literacy and science curiosity in this country is embarrassing and I wish it wasn't that way. Should be putting everything we have into that advancement. Fucking ashton Kutcher what does he know.
@IHateIdiotsAlot88 the technology used (developed by NASA and others) to explore the solar system have created direct spin-offs to make life much easier here on earth (h20 purification/remote controlling/artificial limbs)... Also, this planet will not sustain the human population forever (unless global population control is implimented=immoral) Therefore, our exploration is a must, not for "you and I" but for our species... and others.
Right, lets do away with all pure research...idiot. What I can't understand is why a self proclaimed advocate of scientific research would agree with such a hollow statement.
When the racist capitalist old guard destroys the planet with their coal burning and nuclear power...Where do we go then Kelso? Huh. Yes. Let's ask the star of Dude Where's My Car about what to do with NASA. THATS is what's wrong with this country, Bill. Caring about what Kelso think we should do about our future.
@turtle5181 I agree but there are priorities that need to be addressed first. Slave trade and malaria do come before Mars exploration. Just my opinion. P.S. Kutcher and his wife are championing the fight against the slave trade and he shouldn't be dismissed just because he's a movie star.
@SeoulSon51 Does three wars for profits come before Mars exploration and the advancement of technology, science and the human race ? We should be colonizing on Europa at this point instead of building highways in Afghanistan. The U.S. Government clearly doesn't care about its own people (New Orleans, Freddie Mac, Fanny Mae, Supply Side Economics). Yet, Africa should be a priority ? I say explore space so those of us who are sensible can get the fuck outta here.
@SeoulSon51 I agree with you, I dont think funds should be witheld from either studies... and the slave trade thing is very unfortunate and sickening, but I think that is more of a regional issue, and should be handled by the respective government.
your not gonna end hunger or sex trade or even religion with out stoping the cause. Reason their is hunger in many places is becuase people keep poping out kids cause they cant stop haveing sex. The worlds human population is too large and the only reason we can even suport a large part of the population is because of fake food. We dont really eat real food anymore. Yet people keep poping out kids. Sooner or later a disaster will cause a world hunger so large cannablism will be in full.
i think kutcher makes a great bigger point about big spending and where money goes..sending stuff to mars specifically is at least science, technology, exploration though. better than too much money on wars
Ashton shows his ignorance...a great deal of our understanding of the world and of energy resourcses come from scientific research that looked like it 'had no point'. Without this 'pointless' exploration and research just about all of the advancements we have based on a better understanding of who we are would be gone. Bill, the reason you and I can stand on two feet and complain about religion without being burned alive is because of scientific exploration and enquiry.
Ok then stop sending missions to mars may cut some money that cud be invested in something more "realistic" like malaria but, at the same time this type of resarch is very very important, i mean, the tecnology that is developed to this type of operation is remarkble and in the future this type of operation will be neded and the tecnology developed now will advance to something that all the planet can use in the future, if there´s no resarch now how can this evolve???
nothing boosts technology and industrial economy more than space exploration. I can't believe Maher actually thinks they should cut that out, it's nonsense! And the poverty / malaria thing is out of the question. NASA sends explores our neighborhood, that's what they do. Why doesn't that kid give HIS money to the poor? Why doesn't Hollywood?
Something tells me that NASA etc. would not be particularly skillful in stopping the sex slave trade and stopping hunger and disease. Economic resources don't work that way. These guys specialized in their profession, which is why they work in the field of space exploration.
Ashton Kutcher really upholds his reputation as a total goose. He just doesn't understand the point of space exploration at all. Why do they even invite him on for his opinion?
turning urine into water, as well as desalination treatments, are valuable technologies here on earth. Drought affected countries such as Australia and the continent of Africa would benefit greatly from them for sure.
If anything, they should be investing MORE money into space exploration and technologies; a better use of man power than a bomb
Unfortunately, space exploration is our long term means to survival. We'll never solve all suffering and poverty, we will find ways to colonise the universe and ensure the long term survival of our species.
In a year = The Vatican spends more on luxuries such as artworks than NASA does in carrying out scientific experimentation, observation and inquiry into shit that really matters.
Ashton Kutcher - You and your wife earn quite a bit. Are YOU donating $10,000 per month (meer pocket change) to providing the third world with mosquito nets?
@tjohn1986 I agree, space programs develop most of our 21st century tech. Without the space program a AAA battery would be as large as a car battery but the same power.
NASA is a perfect place to pump stimulus money into, that actually might boost the US's morale if we could go back to the Moon or Mars as well as build up our high tech industries.Instead Obongo slashes the budget and puts an AA hack in who says NASA's main job is running dog & pony shows for medieval Muslims. We're supposed to pretend that Arabs & Muslims made great contributions to space exploration when their only contribution to aerospace technology is flying airliners into skyscrapers
cause it is so politically to call our democratically elected president a nigger, showing that shows that bigotry and ignorance is still alive to this very day even though it should have been corrected hundreds of years ago, right?
but i do agree with you about Ashton Kutcher
since when does he seriously give two shits about diseases in Africa
this is the man that made himself look like a jackass hosting "Punk'd"
Yes, not all liberals are communists. But most Communists happen to have libertarian beliefs. The same reasoning could be put vs. muslims. Not all muslims are evil terrorists, but most terrorists happen to be of Islamic faith. I'm glad you agree with me on Ashton Kutcher. Actors don't belong in the political field, i'm not saying hes not entitled to his opinion. It's just not his forte, would you trust Ashton Kutcher to perform a Colonoscopy on you? Of course you wouldn't.
@Romansteel13 He is a guest on a talk show, I doubt no one except some of his remaining braindead teeny bopper fans takes anything Ashton says seriously. He isn't billed as a pundit
I beg to differ, just the other day I heard someone quoting Ashton Kutcher as some kind of intellectual genius as I passed by starbucks. Hence why I went on the web to disseminate this man's cultivated supreme intellect. Surely he has invented something in the likes of Salk's cure to polio.
Ashton is a fucking ignorant pussy. He wants to cut spending, but takes the easy way out on cutting military spending which is the biggest chunk of the budget.
stop sending stuff to mars? what, the 2 million dollar colonization equipment that will allow us to leave the earth and be an immortal species? your right... lets keep spending TRILLIONS on bombs to kill 3rd world countries... you could cut 1 bomb and make enough money to send another team to mars... just 1 bomb... id like to hear ashtons view on evolution "monkeys? thats stupid"... omg i hate conservatives
Gotta disagree with Ashton. Science is never a bad en-devour. Wanna save money? Paying someone millions of dollars to play a sport, now that's a bit fucking ridiculous.
Leoca, Ashton might be an idiot but to justify it just because it creates jobs is also idiotic. Going to Africa and fighting malaria can also create jobs and save lives at the same time
Gosh what an idiot Ashton is. The Mars exploration creates jobs. From the field scientists to researchers to universities to tech companies, software companies, mobile companies, transportation and other industries benefiting from those technologies directly or indirectly. The Mars exploration benefits millions of people in this country at all. How many jobs did Ashton create? Yeah, one. Dorota his maid from Poland.
@leoca any one whos against exploring space is, in my opinion, insane... its nice to see sane comments like yours standing up for humanity as a whole (think of how many more lives we could save on earth, once we learn more about space and the elements)... i hate these small minded people
I agree with Bill Maher on almost anything, but he doesnt understand what the Space Program has done for this country. it has created a whole series of new job occupations and oppertunities and revolutionized the way we live. satalites basically run our lives, to the weather, TV, Radio, Internet, GPS, Military Reconisince, and plenty more things. Bill needs to get his facts strait.
The space program has brought technological innovation, new polymers, etc. and new ideas that has enriched humanity. A panel of all non scientists debating the merits of space travel is boring and uninformative.
you are too stupid to understand that this planet is not eternal and we eventually need to find another planet to live on or in general learn about the universe to stop the cosmic hazards.
Successful actors are funny. They have one distinct quality (pretty face, unique way to talk, they can make people laugh, etc...), and popularity tricks them into thinking that they´re smart. Hence the "stop sending things to Mars" comment. And the repeating of the said comment after failing to come up with an original idea on the spot.
Rich actors crack me up. Even alcoholics have a more realistic view of the world.
kutcher just doesn't have the big picture in his head - on a long run he gonna be damn happy that we invested a few dollars into space science. and with the children in need, you can argue for any cut-back: "you selfish asshole feed your cat instead of feeding poor prostitutes in the 3. world" or "you wonna preserve this painting, instead of feeding the poor?!"
@erniehudson1 Ashton Kutcher has TONS of money, why does he live in a mansion? Wear the best clothes/eat the best food if there are starving people in the world?
If he really was that concerned he would be living in a moderate home with a moderate amount of wealth and giving all of his money to that specific cause. He has no priorities, but he expects everyone else to have them? What a hypocrite.
Kutcher, your name should be ASShole insted of Ashton, you obiously dont have the less remote idea of space science. He just call it STUFF, but that way is insulting hundreds of scientist who have studied for years and years to do good thins for people. NASA's year budget is between 3 or 6 billion dollars for all manned and unmanned programs while the Military receive each year 500 billion (thats half trillion).
To put it graphically the Martian Rovers Program costed the same as 7 F-22 Raptor.
Yeah Mars is our last best hope if out Planet goes to crap. LOL!!!!. Yeah, an uninhabitable planet is our last best hope. What are we gonna do? are we gonna build a self-sustaining big bubble to live in? That's a self destruction philosophy that these retards want to do instead of using those dollars to help with science that will help preserve our own planet. HMMMMM, it's a planet that we all live on and we should help protect. So, even though Kutcher isn't a genius, he has a point.
As soon as I can get off this shit hole planet, I'm going.
And Ashton Kutcher is one dumb mother fucker. Acting all sanctimonious. Why is the scientists' job to solve social problems?? What has he done about the "sex trade?" Absolutely nothing.
@web45 It still doesn't change the fact that Ashton Kutcher hasn't done anything about any social problem in this country, which makes him a hypocrite for ranting about how "scientists" are doing nothing. (Which is completely false)
Mars is our last best hope for salvation once this planet is shit -- don't listen to douche bags like ashton (why is his opinion even of interest to Bill Maher?)
1. We should send Glen beck to mars , good one Whammyaniac.
2. The current development of the personal computer can be really attributed to the computer aboard the Apollo space shuttle in the 60s. Scientific research spearheads and contributes things that you will never realize! Just cos you sit on your asses and eat burgers and use the technology, don't forget the people who make them. Fund scientific research. If you want to cut back, cut back on military not on space research.
oh yea, I agree. if we want to build an anti rogue-asteroid program, which is a potential threat in the next century, we need to start investing in space technology. it is only a fraction of one percent of what has been spent on the war so far. so if anything, we need to stop the wars and stationing troops in dozens of nations around the world. and above all, we spend 50% of world's defense budget. isn't that insane! the government needs to spend more on resaearch and less on fighting.
@pimezon Good point pimezon. You know it's hard for me to explain. But when you research something, one problem is always linked to a million others. So when you send up solving one long term problem, you inspire and end up solving a lot of them. Ofcourse, these problems DONT have to include military and the like. Even if you solve the same problems with peace as your intention, you can do pretty good.
Mars wont help.. we need to find ways to live here peacefully, whats the point escaping to another planet that's dead..! We kill a living planet by investing on a dead one?
We pollute, deprive the poor, over populate, get mad, kill each other and we think going to mars would solve it.. what will the cave man do in mars? He will kill and seek power there too.. Our greatest problem is living peacefully with each other, some how that gets a lot less money and interest to solve..
Imagine if people had said that about trying to sail around the world? You think they didn't have problems to solve back in Christopher Columbus's day? (Yes I know he didn't discover the country but you get my point)
Don't stop going to mars, stop going to other peoples countries and bombing the shit out of them. With the money you save on that you could feed, cloth, educate and provide healthcare for everyone on the planet AND go to Mars ten times more often.
@beatsone I know, he's pretty annoying. Yeah, lets drop all space exploration and science unrelated to diseases, that'll fix everything. Maybe he should stop making movies and buy high fashion clothes then? Hollywood comedies and fashion don't help the kids in Africa nor does it solve the sex trade market. I think Kutcher should go home, make love to his wife, return to modelling and shut up.
The money spent on space exploration has resulted in a plethroa of inventions we use here on earth and is only a tiny tiny fraction of the money spent on the mililtary and wars and.
NASA isn't the problem - spending + 20% of the fiscal budget on the military is, imo.
No matter how expensive going to Mars is, I'd consider it somewhat less expensive than human species dying out when the next big rock/iceberg comes sailing in from the outer system
Since people that like BILL MAHER have caused budget cuts to Rpject Spaceguard, even if we saw the next big killer in time, there's absolutely nothing we could do about it.
Kutcher is obsessed with "stuff sending to mars" Space programes are aimed to learn about space and finding the extra tarresterial life or places favourable to live so we can live after we consume all the resources of earth...Kutcher only knows to screw Demi Moore his wife..old enough to be his mother lol moron!!
America doesn't need to fix Africa's problems they need to fix their own. We give them a boat load of money and the leaders take it all and don't trickle it down.
I'm also pro mars. We can't live on earth for much longer....scientists are fairly certain they can make life work on Mars
Why do we explore Mars? We spend billions on NASA when we can find cures for cancer with more investment in science that will benefit all humanity. Odds are you keep looking and you might find something you don't want!
I like Bill Maher, but his contempt for science is puzzling and a bit infuriating.
Ashton Kutcher is a dipshit punk assnugget that just needs to shut the fuck up for good. I don't even want to watch the rest of this episode because I'd have to look at his dumb ass.
@madjik9 shut up you nerd, bill is right the only one who cares aout this shit is you because nerds like u cant get real jiobs so u make up fake shit you fuck cocksucker nerds
They are wrong. There will always be hunger, poverty, and dispicable things. But that cannot stop scientific progress. Science is everything to us, from plastic to airplanes to computers. We owe it everything, including our lives. There is a time when people stopped trying to improve science. It is called the Dark Ages. Stagnation.
For example we may have found on Mars an almost illimited source of fuel because the whole atmoshpere has gases that we can use for that. Thats not pointless
NASA's budget for one year is equivalent to two weeks in Iraq. I hate it when idiots suggest we scrap space science in favor of fighting poverty (et cetera) as if we are only capable of doing one thing at a time. Stop the war machine and their will be more money than humanity will know what to do with. Space exploration is the most amazing thing humans have ever done. We are only at the beginning. We are by nature curious and driven to explore.
Ashton Kutcher is as intelligent as a pubic hair on my Right ass cheek..... Wanting to cut Space exploration??... something that potentially advances the human race in more ways than a few extra M-16's ever will... Go suck on Demi's Cunt and leave intelligent people to work out the economy Ashhhhton...you jerk
@dideoxynucleotide just pointing out the hypocrisy in Kutcher statement, surely a just society would receive far greater value in helping the less fortunate or even furthering space exploration than making someone of his talent rich...
@joejoeirish I never said a dam thing about Al qaeda. That was Maher. Yes I know what the military is supposed to be for and I still say cut it. We have enough for detterance far more than needed.
What is Hollywood doing giving money to Kutcher when it could be giving money to fend off malaria in Africa? What is Kutcher doing spending money on big houses, fancy cars, and expensive clothing when he could be spending that money on feeding the poor?
What qualifies Kutcher to give advices on TV on stuff above his IQ. Mars needs to be colonised for humans, infact US should have been there by now. Thank God for China, the space race is on, and now we can have a human on mars soon in my lifetime, I hope.
@chissiez1 Sure Kelso is right - about the fact that science has solutions for every problem facing our planet and our species. So why don't we feed the hungry and end pollution, etc.? Is it the scientist's, who spend too much time looking at stars fault? Or is it greed, politics and religion that prevents us getting real solutions?
contd..However very few people realise that all science and mathmatics are all connected and not seperate isolated topics. So the solving/understanding of one scientific concept benefits scientific understanding in general. for example without the invention of the microscope, germ theory would probably of not had any supporting scientific evidence.
Science is important i don't think anyone with any intelligence can say otherwise. However the scientific topics many scientists choose to study appear to many people to not benefit humanity or have any aplicable technology result from said studies.
Here is a better idea. Lets stop making stupid Ashton Kutcher movies and wasting money on that crap, and he can take his own advice and help with the opressed. So, no, lets not stop sending stuff to Mars. Lets send Ashton to Mars.
How can this uneducated and brainwashed person be given air time to talk about the benefits of science and space exploration?
Maybe raising awarness about our place in the universe, and what is outside of this little planet, is too much for him to handle?
Actually, we send stuff to Mars so the government has less money to fight more wars and kill more people. So lets continue to send stuff to Mars and save lives.
"Sending stuff to mars" sounds like an infantile description of space exploration.
If there is knowledge to be gained, we should do it as a species. One day space exploration may be the endeavor that ultimately safes this species from extinction.
If you want to help the poor (which i do) then you need more money! An idea: stop the wars. That is the biggest idiocy on the planet.

Q: How many cents of each tax dollar goes to NASA?
A: Half a penny.
Redistributing NASA's budget into social justice issues won't even put a dent in them.

@turtle5181 I agree but there are priorities that need to be addressed first. Slave trade and malaria do come before Mars exploration. Just my opinion. P.S. Kutcher and his wife are championing the fight against the slave trade and he shouldn't be dismissed just because he's a movie star.
SeoulSon51 7 months ago
@SeoulSon51 Does three wars for profits come before Mars exploration and the advancement of technology, science and the human race ? We should be colonizing on Europa at this point instead of building highways in Afghanistan. The U.S. Government clearly doesn't care about its own people (New Orleans, Freddie Mac, Fanny Mae, Supply Side Economics). Yet, Africa should be a priority ? I say explore space so those of us who are sensible can get the fuck outta here.
fukinblowme 7 months ago
@SeoulSon51 I agree with you, I dont think funds should be witheld from either studies... and the slave trade thing is very unfortunate and sickening, but I think that is more of a regional issue, and should be handled by the respective government.
turtle5181 7 months ago
your not gonna end hunger or sex trade or even religion with out stoping the cause. Reason their is hunger in many places is becuase people keep poping out kids cause they cant stop haveing sex. The worlds human population is too large and the only reason we can even suport a large part of the population is because of fake food. We dont really eat real food anymore. Yet people keep poping out kids. Sooner or later a disaster will cause a world hunger so large cannablism will be in full.

i think kutcher makes a great bigger point about big spending and where money goes..sending stuff to mars specifically is at least science, technology, exploration though. better than too much money on wars
kushtravels23 10 months ago
Ashton shows his ignorance...a great deal of our understanding of the world and of energy resourcses come from scientific research that looked like it 'had no point'. Without this 'pointless' exploration and research just about all of the advancements we have based on a better understanding of who we are would be gone. Bill, the reason you and I can stand on two feet and complain about religion without being burned alive is because of scientific exploration and enquiry.
robandre1 10 months ago
Ok then stop sending missions to mars may cut some money that cud be invested in something more "realistic" like malaria but, at the same time this type of resarch is very very important, i mean, the tecnology that is developed to this type of operation is remarkble and in the future this type of operation will be neded and the tecnology developed now will advance to something that all the planet can use in the future, if there´s no resarch now how can this evolve???
Bill you spoke too quickly

nothing boosts technology and industrial economy more than space exploration. I can't believe Maher actually thinks they should cut that out, it's nonsense! And the poverty / malaria thing is out of the question. NASA sends explores our neighborhood, that's what they do. Why doesn't that kid give HIS money to the poor? Why doesn't Hollywood?
NScott45 11 months ago
Something tells me that NASA etc. would not be particularly skillful in stopping the sex slave trade and stopping hunger and disease. Economic resources don't work that way. These guys specialized in their profession, which is why they work in the field of space exploration.

If you want to cut back, cut back on military not on space research.
kafcin 1 year ago
oh yea, I agree. if we want to build an anti rogue-asteroid program, which is a potential threat in the next century, we need to start investing in space technology. it is only a fraction of one percent of what has been spent on the war so far. so if anything, we need to stop the wars and stationing troops in dozens of nations around the world. and above all, we spend 50% of world's defense budget. isn't that insane! the government needs to spend more on resaearch and less on fighting.
pimezon 1 year ago
@pimezon Good point pimezon. You know it's hard for me to explain. But when you research something, one problem is always linked to a million others. Even if you solve the same problems with peace as your intention, you can do pretty good.

We pollute, deprive the poor, over populate, get mad, kill each other and we think going to mars would solve it.. what will the cave man do in mars? He will kill and seek power there too.. Our greatest problem is living peacefully with each other, some how that gets a lot less money and interest to solve..

contd..However very few people realise that all science and mathmatics are all connected and not seperate isolated topics. So the solving/understanding of one scientific concept benefits scientific understanding in general. for example without the invention of the microscope, germ theory would probably of not had any supporting scientific evidence.
aussieguy2109 1 year ago
Science is important i don't think anyone with any intelligence can say otherwise. However the scientific topics many scientists choose to study appear to many people to not benefit humanity or have any aplicable technology result from said studies.
