The best version of this on Youtube. Beautiful images - you actually have some pounding waves, winged horses - and even some men - whereas other people prefer images of melancholy girls. Is the explanation you give your own - or Loreen McKennitt's? It's very interesting, anyhow. But what do the hooves and wings belong to? Is she addressing a spirit - or a real musician, with whom she steals away (only to realise that for some reason connected with the "old ways", they cannot be together)?
@jarabaa Thanks, that's kind of you to say. I've always been one to listen to song lyrics, and that certainly played a part in the way I constructed the visuals. As for the interpretation inquiry, I've never heard Loreena speak about any lyrical meanings, those conclusions I posted, I formed on my own. But I'm a believer in allowing others to form their own conclusions, my take on it is by no means written in stone. The questions you posed were quite thought-provoking, something to think about.
……. a beyond awesome treatment, gothling1955 … this made me break down during her Radio City Music Hall gig … this & She Moves Through the Fair … I hope you like this gem of a ditty as much as I do, Lori … (•8-D
@Clematisian Oh yes, I'm quite fond of Loreena's version of "She Moved Through The Fair" (it really outshines so many other renditions by countless other artists, at least in my view), and I'm quite partial to "Stolen Child" as well. How wonderful that you were able to attend her Radio City Music Hall concert, that had to have been vastly memorable. Loreena really is an exceptionally splendid live performer. Thank you for the nice compliment, and also thanks just for watching. ;-)
i totally agree with thee...this is my all time favorite from loreena...and oh these lyrics...are so vibrant....i've lived those lyrics years ago....and it so hurts....
@ANTon1nARTaud How very true, those lyrics are utterly heart-breaking. And yes, this song does have a powerful way of sparking certain memories & emotions from our pasts. Still, there's also a certain kind of beauty in it, despite the sadness. Thanks so much for watching!
@IMAGIO1952 That's very kind of you to say, thank you. And yes, Ms. McKennitt truly does conjure a very haunting quality within so many of her beautiful compositions.
I love Loreena Mckennitt's music, it just so magical. This song is one of my favourites, even though I tear up almost every time I hear it for two main reasons,
1. There really are a lot of wonderful things that have been lost over time
2. I'm a really big Tolkien fan, and this song always makes me think of the elves leaving Middle Earth. I know the end of Return of the King is technically a happy ending, but every time I read or watch it I usually cry or come close to it.
@TheLunarSpirit I share your love of Ms. McKennitt's music, and I'd happily feature more here if not for the copyright issues. I uploaded this song because it's simply my favorite for it's transportive melody and it's heart-breaking lyrics. Also, what a powerful connection you've made between this piece and that moment in the immortally resounding works of Tolkien. I agree: the end of "ROTR" represents what I would call "a beautiful sadness", a moment steeped in powerfully conflicting emotions.
@shellsa100 Yes, she really is a voice "out of time", separated from the pitfalls of music industry fads -- a classically rapturous thing to hear with one's own ears, and the pure beauty within her vocal range is nothing less than magical. Thanks so much for watching, for giving a listen, and for commenting.
I absolutely LOVE Loreena's music, often you know it's her before she's even sang a note. I find her both soothing and uplifting in equal measure, she has helped me through many situations in my life, both good and bad. Thankyou for this my friend xXx
@hippimummy It's such a delight to hear from you, Sarah. I'm so happy that you have gained such enormous pleasure & comfort from Loreena's music. I suspect that such news would please her very much, indeed. Her musical / artistic gifts are a rare delight to so many of us, as we go about trying to get through the trials & challenges of our lives, bringing into them a delicate but potent beauty, during every moment we share with her haunting melodies and exquisite musicianship. Thank YOU so much.
I was just looking her up again last night. I just love her music, sooths the soul and makes me want to dance in the forest. By myself of course where no one sees me act like an idiot. haha the images are gorgeous!
@jellybean4501 Thanks, Jen. Yes, dancing in the forest would be a joyous pastime, especially with the desired amount of privacy. I find that impulse has often presented itself to me while listening to Celtic tunes -- something in the blood, I think. I appreciate your taking a look. :-)
You're very kind, thank YOU for watching. I had seen that a couple other postings of this song were out there in YT land, but I couldn't resist putting my own spin on it. This piece (above all others in Loreena's catalog) has always meant so much to me on so many levels.
@kolkomolesuka Yes, Loreena is a real marvel in countless ways. Thank YOU for watching. I do so love being able to share these various things that I love.
It makes me miss my old home on the coast so much, the warm wind, and how deep and dark the sky was at night... so beautiful... it makes me feel so nostalgic... ^^;
I totally agree, it's such a haunting song on all sorts of levels. It's my favorite of Loreena's songs, and that's saying something -- all of her recordings are magical.
Yes, you're so right, this song is hooked into the steep cliffs & the churning sea in a major way. I almost have the sense that the girl in the song wishes to fling herself into the storm-stirred water in order to join her departed lover. I know, how thoroughly macabre, but that's where my mind naturally tends to lean.
I'm glad that you liked the vid, I really enjoyed making it. Yes, it's quite a haunting song, lots of ghostly atmosphere, very heart-wrenching & tragic. I've heard Loreena perform a couple live versions of this memorable song over the years, but somehow those arrangements never quite captured the same qualities of the studio version. Thanks so much for watching.
Thank you! I really-really love Ms. McKennitt's music, and it was a genuine pleasure toiling to spotlight one of her most emotionally powerful songs. This is probably one of my top favorites from amongst my own self-made clips, along with the slide show versions of dear Maddy's "Fabled Hare" & Uncle Jethro's "Crash-Barrier Waltzer". :-)
This is really cool Gothling, beautiful music. Love the Celtic feel of it all. Stunning images as usual, very graphic. Very quality music and images. The Irish in me wants to do a jig to it!
Thanks, Aqua. I've been meaning to make this vid for quite a while, especially since "Fabled Hare" scored so big with loads of viewings. Yeah, I really love the Celtic influences in this piece. I think it's so powerful to have the combination of harp, violin & electric guitar (specifically the way they've balanced them here). And it's true, I have the same ethnic memory residing in my bones as you do, which tends to make me wanna jump around to the beat -- but I try to resist the temptation.
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. Yes, I confess, I slapped the water color filter onto some of the opening & closing images, because it brought out more of the tiny textural details -- and I also like the dream-like quality it helps to suggest. Thank you so much for watching.
