  • Noticed this excellent video 5 years ago, and I bought this tune, Miserlou which is one of my most played in i-tunes. Thanks for posting.

  • I am not "cypriot" but I find this fascinating. You read two sides to this. Two VERY different accounts of the history of the crisis and why the end result is thus. All I see is finger pointing and not much responsibility taking. The simple question I have is: Who is telling the truth?

  • Just one more reason why Turkey should NEVER enter the EU!

  • 1 thing is good. If we watch those abandoned cities like Varosha and Prypiat, we can see how beautyful and normal cities were in the 70s and 80s when time was a bit more normal and when there was a bit of moral.

  • My parents use to vacation in Varosha. I saw family pictures of it and it was beautiful.

It's a waste, what happened to it. Even if it was reopened it would cost a butt load of money to make the buildings safe again. There are also probably cockroaches, rats, etc. in the buildings so they aren't safe/healthy to stay in. It will ever be like it was in it's prime.

Also, how did you take a 'secret drive' into Varosha? I thought that military paroles the are around te clock.

  • @brs320 To be honest, if Varosha was ever reopened, then the only solution would be to demolish the buildings. The buildings in Varosha/Marash will be nothing but deathtraps now, and are probably not worth maintaining.

  • @Highlander01 I say take the Turkish "soldiers" out of the area and just leave it abandoned. Sadly, at this point, nothing can be done to save the buildings; 15 years is about the limit of salvageability, and that passed in 1989.

  • @retroknight1 Thank you. You are a rare specimen of a civilised human being. A very specific minority of Greek Cypriots did unspeakable things in Cyprus in the 60s. I am a Greek and I am ashamed of them. These were used as pretext for the atrocities in 1974 but since when has one wrong been amended by a bigger one? The current problem of Cyprus is that of an invasion NOT a bi-communal issue. Cypriots whether Greek, Turkish or otherwise have always known how to live together in peace.

  • The city deals more than half of thr tourism industry fir Cyprus. So in 1974 when Turkey got the tourism district beneath their umbrella, they decided to seal it off to everyone. No tourism= no taxes=no money=no war.

  • @FelineHuggles well actually turkey doesnt want it so much.. it is the gayreeks that want it so badly.. so turkey just takes advantage of the stupidity of the gayreeks cz its cleverer =)

  • i am a turk and ashamed what we did in 74,yes the yanks had a part to play.i think the land should go back to the greeks, the way we took it from them was monterous

  • varosha 2010 again!

  • we will be back

  • @ANOFAM2 in your dreams

  • This is not an insult or an attack on the greek. i am a turk so it may seem so to some people. i want peace and nothing more..If you believe you are a fair judge watch the following clip.. search for 1974 cyprus and look at the first video that starts with RE:1974 cyprus the truth or something like that.. Thanks

  • What a waste ,Turkey hand Varosha back to it's to it's rightful owners,The Greek Cypriots.

  • in reply to djphilman comments, no it isn't a myth. there are 2 view points to have a look out. at one of them , there is no mans land, and then the turkish side, and next to it famagusta, you can see all the clothes across the lines, and bullet holes in the wall.

apperently the UN let 1 woman in to get somethings, but i truely do not believe this as why let 1 in. she was evil, she sold them bt she didn't go back in. :(

TURKISH ARMY, AND IMMAGRANTS OUT OF CYPRUS

    TURKISH CYPRIOTS CAN STAY!

  • The Armenian song is eerily appropriate.

  • Varosha has more secrets than you can imagine, occupying Varosha was not the order of Turkey, Varosha was better than Los Angeles before, just imagine this, a country occupies the best place of an island and doesnt use it or grow it up. you should think about the power of America on Turkey. when the occupation was planned in 1974, Varosha was not in the list of places that would be occupied.

  • Killer Greeks.

  • Comment removed

  • why dont you bribe some turks and let them show u around

  • sicmic23, this city was bombed and turkey were about to invade the city, the people fled in fear and turkey than occupied looted etc this beautiful city....they still occupy it...this is not turkish territory at all...they kept city to use as bargaining chip.

  • Comment removed

  • True what you say.I don't understand why Turkey is keeping Varosha as a bargaining chip. There is nothing in there worth salvaging.After35 years of abandonment everything is ruined. If the town is ever resettled the entire town would need to be demolished and built up from scratch.

  • @pappych Truth is, Turkey only planned on getting Keryneia and Morphou and stay there, they were lucky enough to find no resistance so they moved into Famagusta's grounds, the Turkish army bombed the city several times but they didn't attack it, instead of protecting their town they fled like little wimply pussies that they are, and that's that.

  • I couldn't understand why it is not allowed to visit Varosha. They could earn much money with guided trips into the city.

Und das Cafe Edelweiss ist ja cool.

    Fährt der durch Malle?

  • fascinating, one of the biggest tourist destinations on earth that thrived in the 60's and 70's. shame to see it now, but it makes fantastic history.

  • its a conspiracy.

there is secret underground base with aliens and alsorts of stuff going on under the city

..well..that would be cool wouldnt it

  • could someone plz tell me what happened there

  • there was a war between greeks and the turks. there was then a cease fire and The Green Line was drawn wherever fighting was taking place at the time. Greeks had to move south of the line and Turks north of the line. Varosha was a Greek town but it was located north of the line so all the inhabitants had to move out of the city since they were greek and it was in Turkish territory. That is how Varosha became deserted.

  • yehh the car thing is true .. once me and my dad went to a view point and the man told us there is loads of places with brand new goods that just went to waste cars motobikes kitchen aplinaces we walked passed the viewing point and there is a house thats been left 2 rot since 1960s its all bullshit really but ,, annoying that the greeks managed to let them get that far in to cyprus ...

  • Nice video, is it true that in Varosha there's a car dealership with cars from 1974 in it?

  • there is word of this i think maybe its true

  • Yes, the car dealership does exist. There are a couple of photos around on the Internet of it. I tried to paste the link but it doesn't seem to have shown up.

  • A friend of mine served as a foot patrol in Varosha during his UN-Slovak mission(only 6 Turkish snipers and several Slovak infantrymen are allowed to walk in Varosha)

He told me he has seen several car dealers just left behind. With broken windows but those cars were never driven just covered in dust. Imagine all the cars from '74 in a perfect almost untouched state (toyotas, fords, jaguars and so on !!! Almost a treasure, but unreacheable :( I wonder if those shops still keep documents of cars

  • finally its clear that nobody knows how to discuss cyprus both greeks and turkish.so my final opinion about the subject is north cyprus is turkish and south is greek .the real chance of greece to take the whole island is same as morocco joins the european union.also you know that you cant win against turkish army becouse if you can you d try so many times untill 1974.thats all folks that will be my final comment enough reading the silly comments bye bye eveybody .

  • even nobody answered this question.where were the greece army in 1974?why they left greek cypriots alone against turkey? the strange thing is they still talks!

  • a question ? some greeks say that there are 140000 settlers in north and must be thrown away..what about the south after 1974 nobody moved from greece? also in 34 years 2 generations borned.who are these new children cypriot or turkish? i have lots of friends married with a cypriot and they have kid now..what do you think about that?

  • yes tahts the point.i really want to see whos gonna answer this question.the owners of the casinos are turkish how they can left their business to greeks

  • a good question which greeks never answer

  • my friend i do understand ur point...and you are correct on that... unfortunately that is what the turkish goverment tried to do and achieved it... to bring up the matter of the generations living there now... however in the 32 years how many generations were born...?2 maybe..? and how many generations were there before the invasion...countless... people that just want to go back home... people that have as their last wish before they leave this world to go back to their old home...

  • we shall return one day...

  • ben bu bölgede çok garip duygular yaşıyorum insanın içinin yanmamamsı mümkün değil keşke açık olsa....

(i feel too strange feelings in Varoshi.this is so bad i wish it might be open and people can live here)

    although a Turk

  • if i were born in the north side of cyprus and if i cant live there anymore i d feel sad and angry..its not your faults..its becouse of governments faults...greek and turkish cypriots love each others but i dont understand why everything is like that? also turkish and greeks are friends when they live together on abroad...so whos enemy? peoples or governments?

  • @yalinaksay Money

  • @yalinaksay That's bullshit.

  • maybe they can open the maras(varosha) as a war museum in the future...im angry to our soldiers becouse of destroying the history and not keeping the furnitures inside the hotels..my friends father was a soldier during the war.he said they stole everything inside varosha and later forced them to give the golds and jewelrys to the army...but greeks would do the same im sure ...

  • cars in the dealerships and clothes hanging on the lines is just a myth unfotunately. anything left behind is long gone now, all looted by the occupiers i believe.

  • I'll be pleased, if Varosha tells the singer of the song. So, i may easily buy her albums.

  • Just been doing a bit of research!

The song is called "Misirlou" and is performed by "Reptile Palace Orchestra" and can be found on their album "On The Wings Of A Skink"

    Mike

  • Thank you very very much. Now I have the chance of listening such a great orchestra like "Reptile Palace" by the help of you..

  • ye it was sad and unfair when the Turkish cypriots were being killed by the greek cypriots. If it wasn't for you racsist greeks none of this would of happened, all of you greeks just asked for it.

  • how did this guy get into varosha?

  • I was there in 1963 until 1967 then again in 1973 before the Turkish invasion - I have since been to both the North and the South and can't see a way for anyone to forgive for the war crimes

  • This is so sad. I went there last year and it was all fenced off. We managed to get a guide to take us over the border, we had visas to do this. I was told that the town was occupied by turkish military. I would love to have gone in. I have some interesting photos taken on the beach, of the hotels and the border fence, but not sure how to put them on computer for others to see. Really good video. But how sad, all those lovely churches now turned into mosques. Also loved the music.

  • Nobody has been in there, well.. Since 1974, everything dropped and left, cars still in dealership, clothes on racks, tables laid out...

  • yes it is sad...only been to cyprus on holiday..but love the place...can anyone tell me the music used on this clip and what she is singing about...thanks

  • This song seems to be a version of a Greek song called "Misirlou" (meaning: "Egyptian Girl") and has been remade into many covers. This version sounds like it's sung in Spanish or Ladino language...? I kept hearing words that sounded like Spanish words.

You can read more about this song on Wikipedia (but Youtube won't let me post the link).

  • Heartbreaking...i was born in Famagusta and most of the video is taken near the area i grew up...Soooo sad and unfair...
