@maddtrumpet No, hurricanes spin counterclockwise and only happen in the northern hemisphere. Cyclones spin clockwise and only happen in the southern hemisphere. But they are similar. I am trying to find bids of a hurricane or cyclone crossing the equator.

the storm was of course worse than this with it becoming a cat 5 storm and with 300 kph winds. The good news is it spared Cairns and we wait to see how bad the areas of tully and mission beach. Luckily no loss of life is being reported yet but is early.

its now a cat 5 cyclone 800klms wide the biggest storm ever to hit Australia it is pushing 7meters 24feet of water in front of the eye 320klm per hour 200mph plus winds this will be hitting a populated low lying land area be afraid be very afraid good luck qld

I live on Vancouver Island in western Canada, and this terrified me when I heard about it this evening. They havent said anything about the chance of it going across the water between the NT and and Qld and picking up speed to head to Darwin. Could this happen ? Is this cyclone and the cold snap in the USA to do with the eruptions which happen on the sun on the 28th?

Good vid Joe, thanks. I think the storm surge will be the major issue, you can hide inside from the wind but you can't do it for long under water! Its a big one that's for sure. The actual area of the storm is almost the size of Qld.

@1111AKR its enormous, 100km sustained winds for 24 hours building at landfall to 290kmh ... latest information is 4m storm surge, but if the storm arrives 9pm it will be at high tides and a potential of 7m depending on the landfall position.

TC Yasi, CATEGORY 5, will continue to move in a west-southwesterly direction during the day. The cyclone is expected to cross the coast in the Innisfail area at about midnight.

Stay safe brother, one good thing about a cyclone instead of a quake is they at least give one a warning and time to prepare.
