  • Einstein didn't die?

  • He probably lived when they had the first world cup...

  • @chavezjjj9 No, just no

  • i smell savage people watching this video unlike other videos

  • If you search on youtube on how they make the trophy, You will realize that the trophy is actually hollow. Just listen to the sound when they finalize the trophy.

  • @SuperLostBoy

    CHILL. THE. FUCK. OUT.

  • @SuperLostBoy

Probably for the same reason I would call you a waste of DNA

  • @SuperLostBoy you missed the point. what's the sense in it being solid when you can't see the inside?

  • @SonnyTheWhiteDwarf That's the funniest thing I've read in ages. I think it's the way they hype it that makes it seem the way you have described...an epic battle...haha...between two armies...lol...of larger than life heroes...haha...yeah, you've definitely swallowed all the hype. One question: why do they feel the need to wear protection if they're so tough and larger than life...because in real life, they are not that tough. Rugby or Aussie Rules football...that's the real tough guys.

  • what an interesting man i could listen to him for hours even though half the time i havent a cue what hes talkin bout

  • I'm doubtful that the trophy is hollow. IF it was really hollow with how soft gold it, as soon as a footballer grabbed it to lift up, they'd probably crush it in their hands, much like if you got a cadbury cream egg and squeezed it hard, although the insides wouldn't come streaming out.

However, Malachite is far more important than aesthetics. It was the first source material used to smelt down into copper ore. Until that was discovered, they used to just chip bits off a chunk of copper for use

  • i like your hair!

  • what team does the professor support?

  • @musefan258 SPAIN AT THE MOMENT ;)

  • His calculator is filthy

  • Right on, bro. Soccer is for girls.

  • @takeurlumps soccer is for girls ? i'd like to see you run 45 min with only 15 min break then run 45 min straight again....plus extra time run 30 min straight. its not easy

  • @takeurlumps too bad footballs not for white dudes either, better stick with WoW lol pussy

  • my god! i have the exact calculator as him , hey does that make me by any chance a smarty ?

  • i think this guy is wrong y would it be hollow ?

  • @1723soccer Why wouldn't it be hollow?

  • @kiminokami cuz its the world cup its not gonna be light

  • @1723soccer They need to make the footballers look cool when they hold it above their heads. They are not going to make it too hard for them.

  • @1723soccer What kind of ridiculous logic is that?

  • @OscillatingRhythms im just saying its a treasure that people love its not gonna be like 5 pounds that just makes it look kind of cheap.

  • @1723soccer I haven't done the maths to work at the quantity of gold, but in this video they have. They have the exact dimensions and weight of the trophy, so by using the atomic weight of gold they will be able to work out how much gold is in the trophy.

  • @OscillatingRhythms whatever.....

  • @1723soccer Oh dear, intelligent debate not your forte? Although it's the kind of reply I'd expect from someone that calls football soccer. Stick to Oprah, it's more on your level.

  • @OscillatingRhythms hahaha now your just going to insult me ? :D

you dont even know me and no i dont call it soccer i call it football...and your probablly a nerd that has no life, i might be wrong or i might be right you cant judge people if you havent even seen them. and about the cup i was just giving my thoughts you dont need to insult me.

  • @1723soccer You deserve to be insulted, you don't even know the difference between YOUR and YOU'RE. Your is a pronoun; you're is a contraction of you are. Go away and learn the difference then we can have a proper discussion, like adults.

  • @OscillatingRhythms yes i fucking know !! i just put "your" so it can be faster. like i said you don't know me so don't judge me. and i like how you're talking shit behind the screen. and you probablly ARE a nerd with no life...AND don't insult someone you don't fucking know. what does being smart have to do anything ?

    you fat fuck.

  • @1723soccer Haha...no sense of irony at all either, it would seem. So that's thick and not very self-aware. Any other endearing personality traits?

  • Hey!he was the old man electrocuted months past!

  • He's trying to pretend Einstein -- HIS HAIR!

  • you what would be meaningful? gold from each country is collected to make this world cup. thts is the right name for it

  • It may be the end of the footballer

    LOL

  • get a new calculator professor! its glass is all broken!

  • Can't believe this video has got 25 dislikes to this date. It must be the typical 'footie fans' (most likely English) looking for world cup related videos and found this one and missed the point completely.

  • @yabadabadoo7 I don't think that's the point, the majority of fans are brazilians like myself and perhaps some of them missed the point, altough i don't think it's fair to judge "footie fans" for the dislikes. They're simply idiots, like the one's responsible for the dislikes of the majority of professor's videos.

  • do all chemists have a sence of humour? and why does this proffesor has an afro hair? is that another joke? i'm begining to suspect chemists of being comedians or taking drugs

  • If you had gold in the shape of Bugs Bunny it would be 96 carrot.

  • Hope he didn't waste his time watching the World Cup?! Shitty England!

  • cadmim aluminium sulphate is added to fine gold to harden.

Source: my father and my granfather was goldsmith.

  • @vitorix24

It depends on where the gold is from, in Russia they use copper as well hence the ugly browninsh colour.

  • @JamesThWilliams Yes i know :)

  • malachite was also one of the earliest copper ores; simple heating drives off the CO2 and OH and reduces it to black cuprous oxide which is easily reduced to pure Cu metal by O2 or CO, so it was the sort of metallurgy that early people could easily do.

  • thanks for the video, dont worry aboult trools and keep using wikipedia, it is not a devil of fakes and is good for fast information.

  • @wesleysidney

Exactly however using wikipedia for actual research is about as dumb as you can get it's unreliable as the sources are random.

  • if you want to know if its hollow, ask the people who are handling it to knock it and hear if it is hollow!!

  • Yew. Yodbwduwdyeldwdjskdirbdkduebsjdjshdmdhcmfndndnfndncnbjjdjsjsjsjjssjjdjdjddjjdjdjdjdjdjdjd gold

  • The defintive mad scientist....

  • Cant make anything artistic out of 24ct gold! what a load of rubbish! look at Indian and Far Eastern wedding jewellery. there’s even some great Greek jewellery that has survived 2500 years that is nearly pure gold.

Western jewellers do use 18ct gold jewellery as is it an excellent engineering material.

I do love these videos but not when they disregard millennium of tradition with a throwaway comment...

  • The Prof using wikipedia?!

  • @StanLDN ha ha... only because he didn't have a book with a photo of the trophy... he does not have a vast collection of football literature!

  • @periodicvideos well I guess we will have let him off then! Love the channel by the way, makes me proud to be a chemistry graduate of Nottingham Uni! Keep up the good work!

  • Great video. I was wondering if it was hollow 30 minutes ago when I watched the Spanish captain waving it about! I had to find out.

btw BUY gold and Silver. It's going to go up up up soon.

  • Advice: Cut hair. But, interesting trophy. =)

  • i have 2 thumbs this up cuz of your i love it

  • i actually learnt something damn your awsome !!

  • Talk about a fight with a plug socket and losing! That hair is awesome!

  • GOOOOOOLDDDDDD!!!!!

  • why does he have to look like a cliche mad scientist....is it really necessary?

  • @AmerTheFarhat yes, i will do that too when i grow old :)

  • @AmerTheFarhat why not? it is fun

  • As a chemistry student and a huge fan of FIFA, I get the best of both worlds! Thank You so much for these videos!!!

  • is there a new one made every year?

  • @carlypiglet

it's the same original trophy from when it was first won in 1974..it just gets a makeover or polish before the next tournament..that makes it extra special to win it knowing that other great teams have held it before =)

  • When you said you visited Russia 40 years ago, you exactly the same thing that my parents did when they were much younger. They talked about the green tables. If you haven't been in Russia earlier than 40 years ago, I'll just say that they don't have those anymore. I've been to Russia 6 times, in my 12 years of living, and there were never any green, malachite-looking tables at the hotels. They must have gave up on the idea a while ago.

  • @SonnyTheWhiteDwarf : Real football = called in the US soccer, it's way older then your American football....l don't care if you call it soccer focker or whatever, but just know there is one original worldwide known football, and it is not your rugby rip-off :-)

  • yea - im not intrested in football either.

  • i wonder if my favorite professor is here in italy now, i'm sure at my uni everyone watches his videos. good job, keep going

  • Ignore the haters, this is a great and fascinating video. And this is coming from a classicist. Fab stuff.

But please do get your hair cur ;)

  • next fuckin albert einstein of course its hollow dick ed

  • in italy? but that was 4 years ago

  • Brings new meaning to the term: Hollow victory.

  • The players really never touch the real trophy. They are just given a replica of the trophy. The only people that get to touch the trophy are the presidents of the country it is taken to.

  • @destinationpsp the players do lift the original trophy in the final. They get to keep a replica of the trophy after the celebration to take back to their country.

  • @clown86 yeah i just found that out. they dont take the original one home because in one world cup it was given to brazil and it was robbed from them and they never found it so they just give them replicas.

  • @clown86

actually the winning country gets to keep the original trophy till the next world cup tournament..after which they are presented with a replica to keep forever..

  • this guy is very informative and interesting! this is like my fourth video in a row

  • one more thing.. BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dude get your hair cut

  • This is a very good way to inform people and to share knowledge without became boring :) Thank you from one owner of the cup (Italian)

  • @MroStudios P.s. unfortunately now i'm in canada. If i were in Italy i could accomodate you.

  • lol look at that guys hair

  • @scarbzscope He's the only scientist I've ever seen that genuinely looks like a stereotypical scientist.

  • lol so true

  • @Tekinette hello.

Indeed they've never said it is not hollow (as I've pointed out in a few comments). I think you kind of miss the purpose of the video.

FIFA say it's solid gold (quite truthfully I'm sure) and we're just encouraging those with less knowledge than yourself to think about things like density and volume - to look at a trophy which is in the news in a different and scientific way.

No big conspiracy... Just a fun excuse to think and talk about a few basic principles of chemisty!

  • @periodicvideos

I found this video on BBC's site and I hate how one rumor can turn so quickly into news these days... But I understand that wasn't your goal. I do love to learn more about science in fun and interestings new ways and I already subscribed to your great channel !

  • @periodicvideos aah have ever touched gold man...seriously a small biscuit itslf is damn heavy....dummo!!

  • @Tekinette wow you need to calm down with all these accusations. It is just an informative video, it never said it was trying to prove something wrong!!!

  • my friend talks all about malachite on his game.. now i know what it is.

  • it would defs not be a waist of gold

  • My cousin who is a policeman in Italy was at a checkpoint checking bags and luggage at an airport, he came across the world cup trophy. He knew it was in there he saw one man caring a steal luggage, because he also saw some of the soccer players coming from the planes and wanted to check that one luggage that was in a steal case. He got to open it and asked permission to hold it and he quickly took photos of it with his cell phone. He told me it was very heavy, and sort of hollow in it.

  • My cousin was also told that there are two world cup trophies, one is the real thing that is displayed in the world cup championship, and a fake one that is on display in public to prevent the real one from being stolen. The real one is always secretly hidden away in different banks and locked up, until the next world cup event.

  • INRI CRISTO!!

    =D

  • It weighs 6.175kg & stands 36.5cm / 14.4" tall. Wikipedia

  • It isn't a bloody cup it isn't even receptacle

  • how much does it cost does that trophy cost?

  • GEEEEEK!!!!!!

  • what is the Cups volume?

  • This is the mist informative video I have seen on YouTube. Thanks for sharing all the facts.

  • @mylifeinjaypeg Thanks, glad you liked it!

  • do you even watch or play football...

  • i am a scientic too a researcher of why scientic must have ahair like that i guess u aready know why.

  • ok... why is the video doubled?

  • Comment removed

  • The world cup winners are awarded a gold-plated replica of the trophy. The trophy cannot be won outright. Perhaps it is the gold-plared replica trophy that the players hold above their heads, while the real 70kg solid gold trophy is kept hidden away at FIFA headquarters or something???

  • Haaa, I love your hair! Nice video ;D

  • oh rly ?

  • Wonderful! Im subscribing!

  • wow

  • this guy is a legend!!

  • Come on, this guy is exellent!

  • Hahaha looks and sound like my old chemistry teacher lol

  • nice afro

  • this guy represents the idea behind the "mad scientist"

  • @alz57

    So true! :D haha

  • @metalhest

    looooool

  • Just come across a newspaper article in Hong Kong, it goes like this:

    英國諾丁漢大學的波利雅科夫(Martyn Poliakoff)教授稱,經過精密的測量計算,大力神盃高36厘米,如果是實心純金製成,至少要重70公斤。他因此得出結論,獎盃應該是中空的。

Basically it says according to the good professor, the cup isn't solid.

And your official name in Chinese is 波利雅科夫 (bo li ya ke fu).

  • @ck5056 I'm from Hong Kong also! I'm really excited when i read the news :D

  • Subscribed because he looks like the weeto's man.

  • Holy shit u need a haircut.

  • Legend .. Absoloute legend I may have to go to notts just to meet him and take him to the pub to watch a game. Haha I love how he tells his life story

  • Oh, my mistake. The world cup doesn't exist and has never been touched by any human being, except of course for the most powerful people on earth... I'm amazed that I share the same planet with some folk.

  • @CH43G He's married you bumface. Respect individuality! He's a university professor and earns far more than you ever will! BE COOL MAN.

  • I WANT TO HIT HIM!!!!!

  • Hey, you also destroy your calculators !!! CooL!

  • Well I didn't know that found that quite interestin

  • congrats

  • wowsers a FX-992S!! pretty tatty looking though prof, ive still got my old early 90s FX-992S. I scratched the quadratic formula into it with a compass to make sure i didn't forget it in during my gcses!

regarding the worldcup, you could ask an obliging footballer to tap it to see if it made a hollow noise

  • @mnbmnbmnb

what part of the 'footballer' does not make a hollow noise?

  • Take the wig off, it's not befitting a man of your marmite.

  • there is an article about this video on the bbc website

  • @momoreza123 well I guess it must be pretty interesting! :)

  • Etc.

  • world cup isn't in italy this year though <.<

  • This dude gets some action every night - I will bet on it!

  • the World Cup is made entirely from his hair

  • Congrats on being mentioned on the BBC Website =) news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/10301713.stm

  • @moneyballs2222 Perhaps this media attention will launch a new side career for Martyn, he's certainly more articulated than that Hawking fella :P

  • Nice hair mate bet you get all the girls

  • This is great, the Martyn was Mentioned on BBC Wierd and Wonderful for this clip!

  • Classic scientist [the hair]

  • @angelicmisha We have made a video about Roses and Chocolate!

  • I love how science can be applied to *anything*.

Next week: The science behind eating a bar of chocolate. :)

  • okay I'm sorry but, is that his real hair?!

Just tell me and I can listen in peace. :::))

  • nerd

  • thanks im going to try to make my own malchite

  • nice hair what is that made of i hope its not gold hehehhaha ok

  • nice hair what is that made of i hope its not gold hehehhaha ok...

  • That guy does have crazy hair and a calculator, so he is definitely a qualified scientist... but he measures the computer screen... and quotes data from the internet... Type kitten into google images... According to the internet, kittens are eaten by George Bush and are trained snipers... The internet LIES! I'm sure of it!

  • i believe ur hair

  • you can tell this guy gets laid daily

  • @kqpk u chat so much shit,,

  • Nothing is waste of gold when it comes to win a world cup trophew. All the gold in it is worth earning whether if it is hollow or not.

  • Professor, you've made it onto BBC News with this video!

  • So awesome that this made it to one of the top stories on BBC news!

    news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/10301713.stm

  • I've held the world cup and, yes, it is hollow. And covered in dents and scratches.

  • @kqpk wow, how did you get to hold the World Cup? You aren't secretly Zinedine Zidane following us YouTube are you?

How could you tell it was hollow?

  • @periodicvideos - i put the FA cup on my head and took a photo

  • @periodicvideos haha yeah. guess what? I MADE the world cup. :P

  • @kqpk Bull shit.

  • @kqpk how is it god dents listen 2 the teacher and he said they added other element metals 2 make it harder

  • @kqpk While on holiday, you've probably held a counterfeit World Cup trophy that the locals pass off as the real trophy to gullible tourists.

  • @kqpk Ermmmm no sunshine... dont come here and try to fool anyone saying that you have held the world cup, MAYBE THE REPLICA but not the REAL one becasue no one is allowed to actaully hold accept for very important poeple, like Presidents and Prime ministers and ofcourse the winners and so on. lool sorry to burst your bubble but its impossible for you to hold the cup,(not even the security that guard that cup can) anyway as i said dont bullshit lol
