This show is was/is beyond stupid. In reality an explosion like that will liquify your guts and you are a dead fish. Even as a young man I thought the show was assinine. And the backround music is PORNO MUSIC
I remember how disappointed I was when I found out P & J's bikes were on a trailer while riding side by side. Bummer...I just thought they had some real skills!
Just after the actors in scene 4 got back on their bikes, the pan out shot clip began without the original actors in the shot, they were replaced by Latex/Rubber dummy robots and the bikes were projected with wires tied to the under carriage to create a full flipping halt and crash effect , tossing the dummies off and see them bounce , the one of the left (suppose to be John) but that foam dummies robot bounces when it lands it's legs parallel.
this was filmed in Los Angeles,Ca and the San Fernando Valley of California , a 1970s Television show "CHIPS" was one of my favorite television shows while I was a teenager guy who grew up in Burbank, Ca. Broadcast district and Motion Picture Industry all around me at that time. I seen this being filmed in Griffith Park once in the 1970s . The two CHP actors were on their motorcycles on a trailer being pulled by a Movie set truck and camera crew shot them from that truck platform
The bikes were tied on the left front forks. Both bikes turn hard left once they "get to the end of their rope". That ejects P & J over the right side of the bike clear of the handlebars. Both bikes instantly do 180s and stop sliding. Still an awesome stunt for the 80s. Just my opinion.....
This kind of stunt wont get repeated again - not for a tv show - film union safety rules are now stricter. This is certainly one of the best stunts ever performed for a tv programme.
I noticed when Ponch unhooked the trailer he didn't let down the landing gear but when she pulled off if sat down on them. I saw it too where the motorcycles pulled back right after the stunt guys hit the ground. Its funny though how slow traffic was moving. They actually used sections of newly built freeways that had't been opened yet
@beatleman69 there are 2 interchanges used for CHiPs filming, the interchanges were built in the early/mid 70's and were not completed-budget issues. it worked out to use them. as the show went on, the 3 freeways were completed and conected-early 80's. there were many shows and movies filmed on there at that time.
Okay from the physics I agree with you guys, the bikes were tied. But that must have been some strong fishing line. I can't see any tiedown and in those days I doubt they had the technology to erase the ropes from the film. Otherwise lots of ramps woulda disappeared too!
@Emax411 Chances are they were on a ramp close to the ground and the wheels were tied below the view of the camera. I am assuming your talking about the close up's of Ponch and John that is.
@tech9803 If you play it in slow motion, you will see the stunt guys intentionally turn their wheels hard to make it look like the explosion tossed them off the bikes. One hell of a gutsy move.
@Emax411 No they had something of screen behind them tied to the left front forks of each bike to make them pull to one side and snatch right from under them. You can clearly see the bikes sliding backwards because they are tied to something stationary. So they just drove the bikes forward, having the length of cable and the speed they were to ride all tied in to time perfectly with the explosion. Still it is one hell of a stunt to have a bike yanked from under you on purpose.
@Emax411 I think you'll find the bikes were tide to the trailer and once the chord fully expanded it whiplashed the stunt guys off the bikes. Otherwise, if they did it intentionally, the bikes would've kept sliding forward from the momentum of their speed. However, the bikes stop travelling and actually move backwards.
nice cabover, drivers not half bad either. i used to watch this show as a kid, loved it.

You know, watching this at 40 years old, I'm thinking these two are kind of hot. Back in 70's I didn't think so... funny.

They probably used the same wires used to lift people on stage plays.

405 and Venice. You know, that stretch of freeway up in the hills where there are no buildings.

Did they plan to have the blast knock them off their bikes? That's a very gutsy stunt for a TV show if it was intentional.
