However, instead of this split-screen being just a cinematic device, to Brian it had a physical presence. That's why he freaks out when the caller appears; he's reacting to the sudden appearance of an unexplainable box. At the same time, Nick (who has been hidden by the split-screen) has been transported to an unknown location while the split screen was in place.
