I so miss Aaron Copland.I was born in 1954 the American century. Good parents and teachers left me conscious of and saddened by war and suffering. Despite my fathers untimely death when I was 5 and the poverty of my youth; there was always hope and optimism then. The mid twentieth century in America was a time when we all felt sure we could live a dream and conquer anything. Composers like Copland, Bernstein, and Gershwin taught us how to worship peace and freedom.Thank you Aaron for the peace.
@doublehighd The crazy part is my teacher's wife also plays trumpet and she told me she had the fortune of performing this piece under the baton of Copland himself! As I prepare this for my own recital I ask, "Which horn should I play, C or Bb?". To my astonishment she said he was completely impartial! Therefore I've opted my Yamaha Chicago C over my Bach Strad Bb. I too would have expected the composer to have a stronger preference, but perhaps in his younger years such was the case?
One of my little regrets is that Miles Davis and Gil Evans were apparently unaware of this piece. I'd have loved to have heard their interpretation. When was it written? It is as though Copland was aware of the developments in arrangements for Jazz orchestra and was tryimg to emulate the best of that discipline.
does anyone know any other good videos of this peace on youtube? It would be interesting to hear another interpretation...i need to play it for an audition
@wkajoshbad It probably doesn't help much now but my teacher Christopher Brellochs just recorded an arrangement of this for piano sax and trumpet. The album should be out soon.
Beautiful performances by all. Special bravos to the English horn and trumpet soloists as well as the lush sound of the strings and the especially sensitive conductor. It's particularly satisfying to hear Copland, the great American master, played so beatifully in Rome.

This is a beautiful performance. If you want to hear another take on it, Christopher Brellochs plays it on saxophone with piano accompaniment.

Copland wrote it for Bb trumpet. That makes a difference. But the performance is very musical. Pity about the sound.

Heard this at the National Marine Corp. Museum on the Movie they had there...
it was amazing, and a wonderful tribute to those who risked and gave life and limb for our country.
