I dont want to be rude(i know wing tsun is one of the best fighting systems) but those punches are not accurate.. you have to punch in the face then he needs to block/attack.. Am i wrong?
@dragon1965 I agree with the original poster to a certain point. I think the defender (testee) should wear head-gear and a mouth-guard, while the attacker (tester), should wear some kind of 4 oz. glove and then go for it.
@dragon1965 I fully agree it is not standard at all... Im a Ving Tsun practitioner myself. As soon as the opposition even started to move in, looking like he was going to punch or kick, you would be stepping in with several punches down the center line. Which all relates to Loi lau hoi sung, Lat sau jik cheung - Accept what comes, follow what leaves and when the hands withdraw, attack without hesitation.
@HARDSTOPHIT it's standard for any wing chun stylist who wants to keep his practise practical. random attacks, although here perhaps some of the punches were not too accurate, but atleast the power was there. it's little harder to block a punch aimed directly to face though, perhaps he's just not on that level yet to be ready for it. one slip and it's a bloody nose for the rest of the day. couple slips and it gets quite unhygienic too heh
It´s not another ignorant comment: when u train like that, ask for ur colleague to actually DO land the attacks (not try). Pick up someone closer to ur size or down your base to his level. Relax the arm until the attacks lands at it.
Sometimes when we practice and there is a side or roundhouse kick, we could: 1.)gan saus; 2). quan sau; 3.) step into the attacker; 4.) step back; 5.) use the muay thai block of arm up (w/bent elbow, side of head), with simultaneous raised knee (this is great for an instant, unplanned side attack). number 3 is good because then you are inside the arc and there is less power. You can also pak sau, punch, knee, or kick the attacker's hip or upper leg to stop the kick. I need to practice it more.
ive learned wing chun for two years and i must admit that everything is not applicable for a real fight. You will get your ass kicked if you think just having a lop soa and bong is going to save you.You must use the application and also take in other self defence techniques to protect yourself, but all in all ving tsun is a good art to learn on your spare time, just my opinion.
I agree. Would think that deflecting would be better than stopping a kick. But I just started learning WC (Moy Yat lineage) so I'm far from an authority.
This appears to be one of the better ing un videos. I'm sorta familiar with the chun, but it usually looks like crap. this one looks a bit better. I though chunners didn't do roundhouse kicks. Anyway, I'm not sure that defense would be best against a strong round kick. This guy doesn't appear to be putting much power into it. When I did muay thai, he kicks were hard. only way to trap it was to move to the side to where the kick has less power first.
@shawandrew - MT kicks r much slower than the kick he threw. U see them coming a mile away, so its usually a simple punk kick to the groin, which even when late, will beat the MT power round kick.
these guys have great technic, but i wouldnt block a kick with a tan sau. He should be steping forward with a hoon sau and a punch. then the guy would be on his ass not lineing up for the next kick
I actually think this is ok. Quite tactile- which is what wing chun is all about- but if the guy with the long hair relaxed a little more, this would improve no end.
the ton sau can stop a boxers punch the harder the punch is thrown the more it hurts the puncher ...takes no energy to block it just putting your body behind it same for the high kick and thumbs up to xilawei its the small things that make all the difference
What if the opponent tries to kick me under my hip or knees? Is it good to be taller then? I am not on Martial Arts or any fighting sport... I am just viewer but I might take some lessons if I think I can do it. :)
Great video, some of the best quality kung fu I have seen online. Shoulders back and relaxed not turning away and leaning. But yes hands to block a kick rare but will work if you needed to. VT is know for foot to foot hand to hand combat Not hand to foot etc.
this is pathetic. The small asian guy is really g a y, he's not even trying to hit his partner in the face, instead he's aiming for his man sao wu sao.
I would like to try and punch him and see how much can he block.
Wing chun is not for blocking, learn to flow instead of stopping your opponent energy.
@dragon1965 Iv become fascinated with Wing Chun and plan on taking it up in about a couple months. Now I realize this was a demonstration, but could the attacker not break your forearm if that was a real kick? It just seemed like your arm was absorbing the impact, rather than deflecting it.
@CelticPoison Very good Question! We are using angle position to deflecting some of the power, and our strong arm absorbing the rest of impact.Regular martail artist or below may break there arm, dont copy if you dont have enough trainning!
In Wing Chun we care about partner that is why small asian guy keep distance from the face, it is respect approach, we need a partner to come later instaed staying in hospital, another thing, i saw blocking mua tay roun kick on tansall with another hand helping but structure of the body must be perfect and lock to stand the hit and you should be advanced student to do it.
@chepalleee This is william chang concept and more masters again.U probably learn LT system.I agree.BUT...It needs much more time to learn and most people cant wait.Keep training
@chepalleee your right to a certain degree, Ive trained kungfu for years and to be honest this is not really any kind of impressive blocking or even real technique, a person off the street could do this with no training....
I agree with you on that point dragon 1965 ... The structure in WC is very important and you can put some muscle strength into it , like on a tan Sao but should not rely on it to make the technique work
@xilawei Good point ! We can think it this way...the tan sao maynot deflect a strong punch (hevery weight boxer).... . so, strong and skill must work togerther.
@xilawei Even if the kick is strong, if you are skilled enough to catch it at the right angle Tan soa will work. The sifu's angling in this clip is good. It seems to me that some of the people who criticize ( not aimed at you in any way) on you tube show poor judgement. The ability to see or perceive subtle changes in angle and energy are essential to being a good martial artist. Happy new year to all and good luck in your training.
@xilawei A kick like the ones shown in this video is only effective if you stand where the power is. If you defend the kick with a tan sao you have to defend it closer, its hard to explain while typing but I hope u understand.
if a short guy attack the big guy, already has disadvantage, if their fighting skills are on the same level of course the tall guys win. if a kids fight with me. I don't need move at all. same theory apply here.
It is a poor strategy to block a round house with your arm dead on. unless you are only training to strengthen your forearms a bit, but do not do it in combat.
It's poor strategy to have a week arms. In traditional styles arms are STRONG. Shushiwa from Pangai noon, later Uechi ryu was well known for breaking his opponents arms and legs with his forearms. But in instant "fighting" sports you can't even imagine that.
That's not even how you block kicks, sure maybe a tan would work for high kicks, but what if his kick goes for you hip or lower stomach? You need to quan sau that bitch. But I'm sure you already knew that.
I don't know if you're the guy who filmed this or one of the 2 practitioners, but I have a question. Could a block of a kick like shown in this video also stop a full-force Muay Boran kick as well, or is this for weak kicks only. I'm just asking cause I know in VT hands are being trained to be very pain resistant, but how good does the balance stay?
Test to block weak punch frist, then strong one, then weak kick, then strong kick, then look for him to test you.The main purpose is to know how strong you can handle.Everything have its limit.
You CANNOT block kicks like that or a good kicker will break your arm. Watch Cung Le vs Frank Shamrock and you'll understand what I mean. Better to move in and attack the center or the leg they're balancing on.
well thats why if u wanna fight / defend urself against a pro martial practioner one must condition his body . My brother learnt sanda and if you didnt condition your arm it gonna hurtlike hell
I was wondering the same thing. However, the answer is no. an arm cannot withstand a full blown roundhouse. The ideal is to defend legs with legs, arms with arms. It appears here they are just demonstrating how to close and keep centerline. But, good ving tsun always moves in at the attacker to close the gap. a wing chun practitioner would come in straight or at an angle, depending on the opponent.
@ViKiCa92 balance is a very important aspect in VT, and I can assure you that if trained well enough, the balance will not be lost when defending against a kick, in such a way even that a counterattack can be made almost immediatly after the defense.
I think it's really up to the practitioner. Your Chi Sao contact will tell you whether your single handed tan sao will collaspe or not upon contact and whether the pak sao is necessary. If the kick is coming really strong, there's nothing wrong with taking a step back as your using your tao sao.
the best way is to stop kick the roundhouse.. or if its too late straight kick the supporting leg.. you should never really block roundhouses with your arms or hands...
LISTEN GOOD...tan will not block a fully explosive round house kick.....who is your VT instructor? if you are serious look up the basement london...skill at its highest was produced there over 2 decades ago..hope u find what wing chun is really about..or understand what it has to offer.(not what u were doing!) reply to me via mail..
thanks for the comment..this is my own examine to know how much force can tan sao handle. If people doesn't have good kung fu foundation do not try it! It is very dangerous! It said in chinese already."fully explosive round house kick"=how much number of force? Our tan sao can handle how much number of force?
Depend on both sides skill and level, that is why we need to text to understand myself ability,to know how much I can handle. Not only in tan sao ,should test all of it with safety way. thank you for the comment
well when they punch or kick really hard you have to support your tan with your Wu or you intercept the kick or punch by changing the direction of your center line
A good sifu will not hit too hard to beginner,He should know how to control and use reasonable technique to check students hand. changing the direction of center line to face is o.k
yea thats true i see alot of "sifus" on here and man there just bombing their students. and jerking them around all over the place. its a loss of face to the sifus that do that .
wow, the small dude in black fights better being natural than using wing chun!!! I think the small guy should just stick to that good offense, he looks so much more comfortable with his natural ability.
The small dude is acting ok,but with out useing sticking hand skill is not easy to break in to VT man,In this text ,the VT beginner is not alow to hit back,no 100% dodge,no move back, only catch to study the technique.
That's why you have to learn a complete V.T system to understand how to catch punch or kick with skill. It looks like100% hard blocking to most people.but it is not. Look detail to the hands angle.
Please tell me why is he standing there and not moving in ? No! VT would stand on ceremony getting his hands messed up. By occupying his inner gate one would not worry about the hands getting hit.
This is only bascie level testing about catching ability and face the attack ,cannot hit back ,cannot move back."Whoever want to step in, only in second level"
Excellent practical training for Wing Chun. More Schools should implement this type of training. Shows how well Wing Chun can work against a street attack. A+++
Damn it , I don´t understand the intro..

Depend on both sides skill and level, that is why we need to text to understand myself ability,to know how much I can handle. Not only in tan sao ,should test all of it with safety way. thank you for the comment

maybe its just you, no offense

All of the beginner,If you hit back,it will become fighting or sparring.I want to know how good is you blocking .
dragon1965 2 years ago
well when they punch or kick really hard you have to support your tan with your Wu or you intercept the kick or punch by changing the direction of your center line
prancelee 2 years ago
A good sifu will not hit too hard to beginner,He should know how to control and use reasonable technique to check students hand. changing the direction of center line to face is o.k
dragon1965 2 years ago
yea thats true i see alot of "sifus" on here and man there just bombing their students. and jerking them around all over the place. its a loss of face to the sifus that do that .

wow, the small dude in black fights better being natural than using wing chun!!! I think the small guy should just stick to that good offense, he looks so much more comfortable with his natural ability.

The small dude is acting ok,but with out useing sticking hand skill is not easy to break in to VT man,In this text ,the VT beginner is not alow to hit back,no 100% dodge,no move back, only catch to study the technique.
dragon1965 2 years ago
haha, that tells you why wing chun is useless, it couldn't even deal with a boxer jab. waste of horse shit learning this. I am glad I stopped

Even many martial artist say V.T is so good and useful ,but I still believe not every one can fit to learn and use V.T
I wish you can found something fit you better.
Maybe someday I make another action video for art only and not just VT.

I'm no MA expert, but I think that if you tried blocking a full-powered thai kick the way you did in your video, you would broke your arm.
Merdum69 2 years ago
That's why you have to learn a complete V.T system to understand how to catch punch or kick with skill. It looks like100% hard blocking to most people.but it is not. Look detail to the hands angle.

With all due respect ,stand on ceremony is a bad hobbit no matter what game you are playing
moy4you2 2 years ago
Please tell me why is he standing there and not moving in ? No! VT would stand on ceremony getting his hands messed up. By occupying his inner gate one would not worry about the hands getting hit.
moy4you2 2 years ago
This is only bascie level testing about catching ability and face the attack ,cannot hit back ,cannot move back."Whoever want to step in, only in second level"

Excellent practical training for Wing Chun. More Schools should implement this type of training. Shows how well Wing Chun can work against a street attack. A+++
