@ObsidianBlaze Bruno is too aware for this current society. Minorities project so many ideas of "racism" onto common experiences. Bruno went through the experience and didn't get treated differently, he experienced this. But some people can't accept this because they lose the advantages of being a victim. That's why this show got cancelled after it became more and more obvious to people who weren't deluding themselves that Bruno was right.
@KumarZimmerman08 not really. its racism. the reality is a white person is more likely to rob another rob another white person. its based on probability.
@antmlova1 Actually a black person is 50 times more likely to attack a white person then the other way around and upwards of 200 times when in a group. Of the 1.7million acts of interracial violence 90% is blacks attacking whites.
@KumarZimmerman08 Your statistics are flawed, baseless and highly unlikely. It's clear that white people outnumber black people in the united states. therefore, it is much more likely for a white person to commit violence against a white person than a black person.
@KumarZimmerman08 and to add something else. White people committed the greatest violence against black people ever. It's called 400 years of slavery. Why would a white person commit violence against a black person when they already robbed them and their ancestors?
@antmlova1 Whats slavery that ended over 150 years ago got to do with Black on White violence today? Europeans have been enslaved through-out history by other people, We've had our lands conquered and our people enslaved, sold, raped, killed.
I'm Cuban, I'm seamlessly in the middle, yet not fitting into either black or white culture. People tell me I'm a liar because I'm pale, but my family is 100% Cuban. We're considered Mexican when it's so much different then the Mexican culture. Abula was light skinned, blue eyed, blonde and Cuban, from Cuba. I've always felt more at home with black company over white, I think it's because the white family like this is so frigid to me. Black families are kind of like Cubans, louder and loving.
I agree that white people are more intimidated by "blackness" than just black skin. Also, I wanted to mention that as a white salesperson I think that if anything I would overcompensate and be more nice to a black person, certainly not show them coldness.
Bruno thinks that white people calling black people the N word is the only way people express racism- he doesn't think racism can be more subtle than that. He keeps expecting something dramatic to happen, but it's not "cool" to be overtly racist anymore.
Bruno is white & his view on things are from a white perspective . So when a salesperson comes over to him very quickly, hes still white & assume its just b/c they want to help him, false . Your appearance is black. When someone moves over on the sidewalk, the way they do it is very important . Sure they weren't gonna knock 'em over, but did they scurry & avoid you eyes, cautiously move over while staring right at you, or did they simply move over .He is still white, & not noticing the changes.
The real reason that Bruno and the black father (I can't remember his name) dont get along is because of their different approaches to race. Bruno sees race as an illusion, something that doesn't really exist sans meaning. While the other guy sees race as an essence something that's part of you and makes him "him". Frankly I think race it what you want it to be. It could mean everything or nothing or even a strange combo of the two
God, the parents are so stupid, the white parents have absolutely no idea about anything especially the mom.. And the Black parents are dumb asses trying to see racism where there obviously is none it is really annoying acting like they have it so tough being black... ugh
the kids however are actually intelligent... both of them
The black guy is the most racist person on this show and he is attacking the white man simply because he's trying to prove racism is not today what it was in the 1960's .
It's like they both have points. Yes, if you carry yourself like a gentleman, you're more likely to get respect. There's also the fact that black people DO get odd responses, sometimes because of them acting in a way that shows "blackness" and sometimes regardless of whether they're polite or not. It should be important for all black people to carry themselves in the best way possible regardless of what happens, at least then when you DO notice racism, you've got the most of the argument.
they should've had bruno jog in a majority white neighborhood and see how fast cops get called on him. This show is very one sided. I didn't expect much from ice cube, a man who had no problem partaking in blaxploitation movies..
by gorge i think she's got it. the girl is actualy taking in the experence as her self and is not acting like she is some one else. and was accepted. now if only the black family would do the same. they would see they are being treated the same for acting the same. and it's not acting white it's being better.

I don't think it has to do with being black or white. I think it has to do with being a thug or not. If a black guy like the men on this show were walking down the street, I wouldn't think anything of it. Somebody suspicious would be a "thug" looking type. But the same goes for a white guy. If a white guy comes in looking like a punk, then you look at them differently, also. However, for the most part I agree with Bruno. If you are respectable, you will get the same in return, black or white.
Out of the entire show, i think their children are the educated and openminded ones in both family.
The daughter, wow. She looks so much better as a black girl than a white girl. What a transformation. The son of the black guy, he looks better as a black guy. He should stay black.
I can't believe Bruno thinks the sales man came over because he actually cared about him. Bruno,he came over to make sure you are not stealing anything. wait till you experience someone following you around. I have to said with the black guy on that.
Though, i think Bruno is blind in some aspect, the other guy, the black guy is also blind. not everything is about race. Someone moving over in a sidewalk, isn't racism.
bruno is ignorant and oblivious but he has a point. You can't be too sensitive or paranoid about racism because like he said, if you're looking for it, it will always find you. When white people treat you different you just got to shake it off because the fact is, you don't know what their problem is. Not to say racism doesn't exist but there are more important racial issues to worry about than somebody not making eye contact or moving over on the sidewalk
About Bruno's point about racism in the context of service in a shop, or greeting people ~
he is correct that it is foolish to blame another when it is clearly your attitude that's to blame for their behaviour
But I would also add that it is also equally as foolish to blame yourself when you have done nothing wrong and it is clearly the other's who is being rude.
That black guy is annoying. He is turns everything into racism. It is like he feels starved of authenticity to the point of attempting to make race issues, just so that he can have a conversation piece or excuse.
True, if someone pushes past me in the street and doesn't apologise, I don't immediately think it's a colour thing. I don't know if it's because I'm young in a big city but to be honest racism isn't something I've knowingly really experienced
I think he's over reacting with the sidewalk thing, but I think he is right about one thing, if you're at a store and someone askes you, "is there anything I can do to help" that's code for get out. I always feel nervous when someone askes me that at malls and things but i'm white and that happens to me, but I still get abit nervous about it.
he could be black, but theres definitely a whiteness in his appearance despite the dark skin. some said he looks more middle eastern or egyptian, even south indian. I think one big factor is Bruno being a white male, gives off a very white vibe in blackface, like hes a very assimilated, "white-washed" yuppie black. That also will reduce his experience of racism.
No, I've seen blacks that look just like him. I actually was finding it funny how easily he transitioned to black. Out of everyone there, he looks the most realistic. Have you seen an Ethiopian bf? Or blacks from New Orleans, ect.
You know, everyone that is not ghetto is not white washed, or yuppie. What Bruno is doing, and thinks, is that if the black man "acts white" racism goes away. I use to think he was right, i was raised in Europe and came here thinking much like Bruno.
It does not work, in fact you get more backlash to be honest, and that's from both sides. This is an American problem though, in other countries it's not perfect, but it's not like this country, that's for sure.
America is divided, and segregated by race neighborhood wise, and then those areas are designated a free for all for all the ills of society, the worst schools, etc. In Europe they educate you, everyone lives side by side except in some areas, Muslims, etc, Indians will ban together.
I was born and raised in this country. I am what you consider "white washed." Yet, in my opinion it is acting like who I am, an American. Most of the racism that I have experienced in American has been from other blacks and immigrant minorities.
So what are you saying? That I'm racist, or that you identify with what I'm saying? I'm not quite sure, because what you said above is an ambiguous statement.
I think the difference between the way Bruno is treated and the way a black person is treated is because of the way he talks and carries himself. He doesn't talk like a black person or act like a black person, even if his skin is dark. White people are intimidated more by "blackness" than by black skin, I mean black culture. Black people from the suburbs who talk like white people don't get as much suspicion. And a white guy who grew up in the city and talks street DOES get a lot of suspicion.
I see what you mean... sort of like its a social class thing instead of a colour thing... and i agree with you, because I would DEFINITELY be afraid of white person with a shaved head and bear mace(theres a gang of skinheads where I live who go around bear macing people then taking any items of value.)
@mildseven2006 there is no "black" or "white" way of speaking. There is proper english and improper english which has been labeled the way a black person. If a white person speaks improperly, especially from the south where that kind of dialect is normal he/she will not be labeled as speaking "black" or "white" but country. Its also known that a black person talking to another black person may or may not speak differently when at work or talking with other white people.
@mildseven2006 To say he doesn't "act" or "talk" like a black person means that you have pretty much lumped up the entire black culture in a small ignorant box and you are one of the highest rated comments on this clip?!?!?!? SMH
Well, you can read it like that if you want but obviously that`s not what I meant. I did say that there are black people who grow up in the suburbs and don`t speak what white people typically think to be black dialect, and I did say there are white people who grow up in the inner city and DO talk like that. Obviously my point is exactly yours, that neither group uniformly speaks or acts a single way.
Bruno makes a good point. The black guy acted pissed as hell anytime Bruno disagreed with him, and couldn't stop cussing around the middle of the video.
racism is gay, plenty my boys black, go to Iraq and get shot at, tell me white and black matters after that when you have to trust people of all races for your survival, we all bleed red
I don't most people are intentionally racist, its just that we are all driven by fear that seems to control our actions at times. Everyone makes racist jokes when they are with friends .
I hate the word racism, because nothing is just about race. It's about appearance. A person with a lot of pimples isn't treated the same as clear-skinned. A lot of short people won't get leadership positions or are spoken to as children. Right now, think of what a soldier looks like. Did you do it? Okay, how many of you saw a female soldier? Now think of a nurse. Now think of a plumber. Fat white guy, right?
This episode really got me thinking. Many stereotypes of both black and white people were brought up and were confirmed. It's so true in the beginning of this episode how the black family said the white family would have a harder time adapting and learning about black people because black people already know how to act white and how white people act because they have to adapt to it to get what they want in life. It did seem though that black people do blame things that happen on their race ...
I'm 26 years old and I don't believe white people around my age or younger have had to deal with the racism(oppression) that I have experienced. Of course its not on an equal or higher degree on blacks than it was before I was born, but its there and I feel it.
I can't feel the racism that my parents went through just like whites cant feel the oppression that their ancestors went through.
So I understand what Chica is saying, but shivboy89 what are you trying to argue? lol
yeah of course you are not exposed to the racism that earlier generations faced... but no matter what background you are from, you will experience some... middle eastern people at airports... blacks at the workplace... whites in predominately black neighborhoods... goes on and on
...you know one of those racist experiences will happen more than the others because of the frequency that they can't avoid.
Simply put- Being aware of racism is a part of a minorities life. Our skin color makes us the most obvious minority. So it doesn't matter where we go, we mentally prepare ourselves when living our daily lives. It makes it easier to deal with instead of lashing out at random racist occurrences.
Ok, at the end they made it out like there was more, right? But then again it said p6 of 6... but they had to of filmed more because they had clips of other episodes! Where is the rest?!?
abselby.. i made playlists where u can watch the whole show easily or just each episode. click on my name and click on playlists. there u have all the episodes and a "play all" button to watch from beginning to end.
I'm black ....somedays u see racism sometimes u don't...the black man should realize the white was only black for a day and give him some damn time to see whats up....he like tryna cram him with shit like he missed the racism....u ultimately have to have a good atitude towards life and it's bullshit
I'm white and I think it's really easy for us to say racism doesn't exist. It is latent and invisible but in offhand comments and dinner conversations I am sometimes shocked and think we have made no progress in racial equality!
if u really look at it racist people are either very insecure or just very dumb uneducated people.....after watching the whole series u realize bruno's whole things was trying to make black people seem like they all have bad atitudes and racism is something in their heads......he's making the the black man crazy.....it's like being mocked hahahahaha
And it's crazy how many times he said the word nigger. I think he's the live under the rock type of person. And him mentioning that his friend stated that he doesn't get discriminated against was like he was trying to prove that racism doesn't exist today. He should've taken black Bruno to leo's grill so he could see the blatant racism.
"I think whites are carefully taught not to recognize white privilege, as males are taught not to recognize male privilege. So I have begun in an untutored way to ask what it is like to have white privilege. I have come to see white privilege as an invisible package of unearned assets that I can count on cashing in each day, but about which I was "meant" to remain oblivious.
Well, I thought it would help. I did give her name and credited her with the information. I don't feel as if I can improve upon what she's said; it's pretty simple.
I wish when Bruno went to wash the make up off---that it wouldn't come off. See what a difference it would make in his life if he had didn't have the priviledge of washing his color off.
Essentially, it means that being white (in American and in other places) will have a certain affect on your lifestyle, and on people of color around you. For example, if you are white, you are not likely to be pulled over for no reason. If you are black, this privilege will not normally apply to you. Black people are often expected to assimilate to white culture, and many have expressed that they do so in order to protect themselves.
A white person can go shopping without being followed or harassed. Black people often experience harassment or poor service in public venues. Peggy McIntosh lists more of these at the link I provided. Here is a quote directly from that essay:
White privilege is like an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools , and blank checks. Describing white privilege makes one newly accountable. As we in women's studies work to reveal male privilege and ask men to give up some of their power, so one who writes about having white privilege must ask, 'having described it, what will I do to lessen or end it?'"
I don't agree with Bruno a lot of the time (racism still exists, only in subtle ways), however I agree with him about learning to approach it in a different way, and that if you act respectfully you will get better responses from people.
since when is acting proper just a white thing. we all have to act this certain way in some situations. its like white rednecks, they think their way is proper but they have to learn too.
mtDNA begs to differ you fucking shitwit! And besides, everyone is "an advanced form of monkey" as you put it. Go to school, get educated, then come back and talk. Too many of your kind make shit damn near impossible for us minorities!
I agree too, man. She's really just diving in and benefiting completely. Though I think Nick gave her the motivation, because after he told her he was just going to be him no matter, she seemed to do the same.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
its not about color...it's about proper behavior...dumb clothing, using too much of slang, cursing, and not caring which leads to poverty. Lincoln freed slaves 160 years ago, how long does it take them to get their act together?
techno, since when is acting white proper behavior! You call our clothes dumb and say we use too much slang because you dont understand our culture.I can easily say the same thing about white people. what you call"getting our act together" is what i call pretending to be something we're not. i personally think we HAVE our act together, its just that we are not accepted in white america.proof: im 15 and forced to learn white history/etiquette all year while mine gets vaguely told in 28 days.
it's about being successfull in life. U have to dress proper to get a better job, better education and etc...about "pretending", we are all doing it,i am only 20 bro and I have to wear tie and shave to work...bullshit right? but what else can i do to pay my school...selling drugs in every corner is what some ppl do...but i'd rather "pretend"
I worked as a sales person, the managers tell you to make a certain amount of money on a particular day. Many of my racist colleagues treated everyone equally, because they had to in order to keep their job.

DEADHEROS81 2 years ago
he could be black, but theres definitely a whiteness in his appearance despite the dark skin. some said he looks more middle eastern or egyptian, even south indian. I think one big factor is Bruno being a white male, gives off a very white vibe in blackface, like hes a very assimilated, "white-washed" yuppie black. That also will reduce his experience of racism.
dooshette 2 years ago
No, I've seen blacks that look just like him. I actually was finding it funny how easily he transitioned to black. Out of everyone there, he looks the most realistic. Have you seen an Ethiopian bf? Or blacks from New Orleans, ect.
You know, everyone that is not ghetto is not white washed, or yuppie. What Bruno is doing, and thinks, is that if the black man "acts white" racism goes away. I use to think he was right, i was raised in Europe and came here thinking much like Bruno.
DEADHEROS81 2 years ago
It does not work, in fact you get more backlash to be honest, and that's from both sides. This is an American problem though, in other countries it's not perfect, but it's not like this country, that's for sure.
America is divided, and segregated by race neighborhood wise, and then those areas are designated a free for all for all the ills of society, the worst schools, etc. In Europe they educate you, everyone lives side by side except in some areas, Muslims, etc, Indians will ban together.
DEADHEROS81 2 years ago
I was born and raised in this country. I am what you consider "white washed." Yet, in my opinion it is acting like who I am, an American. Most of the racism that I have experienced in American has been from other blacks and immigrant minorities.
moderadonna 2 years ago
So what are you saying? That I'm racist, or that you identify with what I'm saying? I'm not quite sure, because what you said above is an ambiguous statement.
DEADHEROS81 2 years ago
I think the difference between the way Bruno is treated and the way a black person is treated is because of the way he talks and carries himself. He doesn't talk like a black person or act like a black person, even if his skin is dark. White people are intimidated more by "blackness" than by black skin, I mean black culture. Black people from the suburbs who talk like white people don't get as much suspicion. And a white guy who grew up in the city and talks street DOES get a lot of suspicion.
mildseven2006 2 years ago 43
I see what you mean... sort of like its a social class thing instead of a colour thing... and i agree with you, because I would DEFINITELY be afraid of white person with a shaved head and bear mace(theres a gang of skinheads where I live who go around bear macing people then taking any items of value.)
NijelBoswell 2 years ago
@mildseven2006 there is no "black" or "white" way of speaking. There is proper english and improper english which has been labeled the way a black person. If a white person speaks improperly, especially from the south where that kind of dialect is normal he/she will not be labeled as speaking "black" or "white" but country. Its also known that a black person talking to another black person may or may not speak differently when at work or talking with other white people.
shaytuck05 1 year ago
@mildseven2006 To say he doesn't "act" or "talk" like a black person means that you have pretty much lumped up the entire black culture in a small ignorant box and you are one of the highest rated comments on this clip?!?!?!? SMH
shaytuck05 1 year ago
Well, you can read it like that if you want but obviously that`s not what I meant. I did say that there are black people who grow up in the suburbs and don`t speak what white people typically think to be black dialect, and I did say there are white people who grow up in the inner city and DO talk like that. Obviously my point is exactly yours, that neither group uniformly speaks or acts a single way.

It did seem though that black people do blame things that happen on their race ...

u cant talk if uve never experienced discrimination or have never been oppressed.
u cant just say love everyone... u can only take so much until the love dies down.
im not black, but im muslim/middle eastern and people say im just look for racism too.
how u gonna say that when someone looks at u like u gonna rob the store(black), or blow up a plane(muslim)?
chica786 3 years ago 2
what point are you trying to argue? everyone has been oppressed, no matter what race.
shivboy89 3 years ago
I'm 26 years old and I don't believe white people around my age or younger have had to deal with the racism(oppression) that I have experienced. Of course its not on an equal or higher degree on blacks than it was before I was born, but its there and I feel it.
I can't feel the racism that my parents went through just like whites cant feel the oppression that their ancestors went through.
So I understand what Chica is saying, but shivboy89 what are you trying to argue? lol
nonoiseplz 3 years ago
yeah of course you are not exposed to the racism that earlier generations faced... but no matter what background you are from, you will experience some... middle eastern people at airports... blacks at the workplace... whites in predominately black neighborhoods... goes on and on
shivboy89 3 years ago
...you know one of those racist experiences will happen more than the others because of the frequency that they can't avoid.
Simply put- Being aware of racism is a part of a minorities life. Our skin color makes us the most obvious minority. So it doesn't matter where we go, we mentally prepare ourselves when living our daily lives. It makes it easier to deal with instead of lashing out at random racist occurrences.

Axlepros 3 years ago

I wish when Bruno went to wash the make up off---that it wouldn't come off. See what a difference it would make in his life if he had didn't have the priviledge of washing his color off.
roshambo187 3 years ago
how is that a PRIVILEGE? you're insinuating that having color is something bad.
missrahina 3 years ago
Essentially, it means that being white (in American and in other places) will have a certain affect on your lifestyle, and on people of color around you. For example, if you are white, you are not likely to be pulled over for no reason. If you are black, this privilege will not normally apply to you. Black people are often expected to assimilate to white culture, and many have expressed that they do so in order to protect themselves.
rollingdamage 3 years ago
A white person can go shopping without being followed or harassed. Black people often experience harassment or poor service in public venues. Peggy McIntosh lists more of these at the link I provided. Here is a quote directly from that essay:
rollingdamage 3 years ago
White privilege is like an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools , and blank checks. Describing white privilege makes one newly accountable. As we in women's studies work to reveal male privilege and ask men to give up some of their power, so one who writes about having white privilege must ask, 'having described it, what will I do to lessen or end it?'"

its not about color...it's about proper behavior...dumb clothing, using too much of slang, cursing, and not caring which leads to poverty.
