while at fisrt hearing and not being familiar with Mark Lanegan, he does sound like a Waites copy, but having heard more of his stuff I agree they are very different in both style and performance. It was just unfortunate that my introduction to Mark Lanegan was this song. i've since become a bit of a fan.

@simon9264 they have similar voices. lanegan is getting older too. he's going to sound more and more like waites, there's nothing he can do about that. even so there's still something very distinctive about both their voices. lanegan has something going on there that waites doesn't and vice versa. but, superficially, I'd agree if you haven't listened a lot of both them it would be little tough to know who it was if you had to guess. but I'd recognize lanegan here immediately.

@simon9264 Although the two sound somewhat similar, they are very different. Tom Waits has a "I just got done gargling scotch and cigarette ash" type voice where Lanegan has a "I've been smoking since I was 5" type voice. So Waits has a harsher voice whereas you will still here Lanegan harmonize more and stuff. I love em both.

The only problem I really had with this cover, and it's nothing personal against his talent, is that when compared with Johnny Cash's version, he coveys far less emotion. That's all, and that's what makes Johnny Cash great in a lot of ways. He puts way more emotion in his songs.

I have nothing against Lanegan and I'm sure he's a great artist, this song just isn't for him in my opinion.
