I lived in Fish Camp, Ca very close to YNP during this storm. I have never ever seen it rain so hard, for so many days in a row, in my whole life! My house was flooded, and sustained water damage. we had to rent a vacation cabin while the storm subsided, and then get to work repairing our once beautiful mountain home. t was a flood that was incredibly powerful. I am just glad my family wasn't injured.
I was in Carlsbad Caverns in about 1978 when it had to be evacuated because, as was correctly stated by the Park Service, they were 'experiencing a flood of the type they calculated as HAPPENING only once in 500 years'. I-10 was closed in many places around Phoenix. 6" standing water on most of the surrounding desert roadways, very different....
I haven't read ALL the comments, but to include the title on the video as "100 Year Flood" is misleading. The actual term "100 year flood" means specifically that there is a 'one-in-100 chance of flooding' in EACH & EVERY year. This in reality means that in ANY and EVERY year there is actually a 1% chance that this type of flood event WILL occur....NOT that this is an event that may occur only once in a 100 years,..although this is indeed the case here.
I took my family to Yosemite, my first trip to there. We stayed at the Ahwanhee. We could not leave the hotel and were eventually told that we might be airlifted by helicopter to Merced, since we were running out of food and water. Once the flood waters began to receed, we were intructed to leave in one big convoy, with tow trucks every few miles to rescue us. The Hotel denied any request for a refund or return voucher, telling us that we were lucky to be a part of history.
@vfrdoc Thanks for that in put, I ate at the Ahwanhee a couple days ago and it's a stuffy trap and all they make you feel like is that you're lucky to be walking on the grounds they built. I will make sure and raise hell next time I go there just to mess with the stuffy heads all up in the clouds of whatever
I was working at Yosemite Lodge when this hit... I'll never forget it or the way the company treated it's workers. I still have panic attacks when it rains for more than three days... I miss Yosemite thou it's still one of the most beautiful places ever.
Mother nature will always win. No matter what we build on top of her she will tear it down. As a resident of a narrow sierra valley this is nothing new and it is absolutely beautiful.
I just got back home today from Yosemite it's such a beautiful place I was amazed I was in a heated tint by lower Yosemite falls I loved it so much I already miss it :(
This happened while my dad was dying in the hospital..and he loved yosemite with all his heart. i believe still to this day that yosemite was crying for his death.
I was lucky to have stayed in one of the cabins that got washed away in 1989. Enjoyed it for 2 days. I was shocked to see what the power of water can do. Amazing.
We use to have more rain back in those years, now we really have a serious problem here in California due to the lack of water. I went to Yosemety last weekend, still amazing but just a little of snow, not a good sign.
I live there and work at badger pass as a lift operator when it started to rain and the snow started to melt we rush back to the valley where they told employee's and guest to stay at yosemite lodge for the night. This was a heartpounding night for all of us and to see the next morning damage.
Happy to say I was there during this time, I cooked bbq hamburgers in the rain right up to the edge of the flooding river,it was a new year, I felt we should celebrate even though fury was taking place, it was wrath and beauty. I regret helping to clean up. Galen/Annex.
I remember this year. We were visiting family in Oregon, on the other side of the mountains as us. We were stuck there for 2 weeks because we couldn't go over the pass. It was closed because water had completely overtaken it.
