I agree. I didnt do a big chop simply because I was not ready for short hair. I think growing the perm out, trimming in stages is less of a shock. But when I did cut the perm off I loved it, still do.
My hair is more or less the same as yours (I wear the same style). My mom still makes negative comments, it really annoys me, but I know how good I feel in my natural skin (or hair) and thats the main thing. I recommend every woman with relaxed hair goes back to their roots!!
your confidence shows. i was motivated to chop my hair when i seen your video getting your hair chopped. honestly once is got the scissors out, i punked out. thank you for this video. im just not ready. but my transition is driving me crazy
Getting your hair permed or keeping it natural is a personal decision. You will have to live with what you choose. My mom was dead set against me going natural and I was 16. So, I just kept my hair in braids until my relaxed hair grew out. And, when she thought I was getting a relaxer, I was just getting a wash, dc and trim. Once I left for school, CHOP! It's my head and I will do with it what I please.
Hi Lady, I just want to stop by and say THANK YOU. That was the only congratulations i got on my BC lol sad huh. All i have heard for the past couple of days has been "u look like a boy"... "Y did u cut ur hair"... "Short hair is not sexy"... n "nappy this...nappy that" lol. If i had not prepared myself for this, i would have went out and bought a wig lol. but i just want to say thanks to u and others like u out here on YT because i would never have found the courage to cut my hair.
i also think they should make their parents see the facts about relaxers especially how dangerous they are. and if they really want the do the bc they should also explain them that dealing with two different textures can cause a lot of breakage. someone with a healthy brain will understand that, even if they prefer the look of relaxed hair.
my mom was all for it..she jus wanted to make sure i was doing it for the right reasons & i would be happy with the result of my BC {my mom has been natural for years but she get her hair straighten<--only wears it curly occasionally in the summer}
My mom was the same way. She kept telling i should just go ahead and get a relaxer especially the day i bc'd. But since then (its been 3 months) she has come to accept it. She still says things like "your hair is nappy" or "why don't you wear your wig" when I'm having a bad hair day. She has seen my curls get better with every week and the amount of growth and tells me its looking better. I'm hoping by this time next year I'll be able to convince her to go natural.
My mom was pretty understanding about me wanting to go natural. She and my sister even said they wanted to natural too! I am only 14 so I knew I wasn't going to be able to go through this journey without the support of them
Parents are hard. If yall are under 18 and your parents are super serious about not letting you go natural, then just wait it out until you have money to pay for your own hair and stuff.
Soo true !! Once ppl see the change, suddenly they become more accepting and open minded !! Im so glad your Mom saw your dedication and perserverance and of course the tangible evidence that you KNOW what you're doing.. and CONGRATULATIONS on having a date in mind !!! Please tell me before you do and keep me posted, I just love reading and hearing about the BC =)
"You must be the change you wish to see in the world" - Mahatma Gandhi
Good Advice, never do the BC until you are ready. I did mine on the 19th of this month and it's cause I was ready and I can't tell you how much I love it. I love it more cause I transitioned my mind before I transitioned my hair and that made all the difference.
aww girl CONGRATULATIONS !!! Im soo glad you LOVE IT.. I know you wear it well too ! I'm adding your comment to the info box too !!! You do have to first make the mental transition before you take any other steps... thank you for that comment !!! =)
Great advice. And it applies to anyone going natural or thinking about it. I strongly suggest that all you young ladies out there try and talk about your decision with your mom (or whomever). Explain your reasoning. If you can't explain it, then you're not ready to do it. Do your research/homework and present a valid argument. I tell my kids if you can't tell me why you want to do it then don't! Know that you have tons of support within the YT community though! Shelley, more videos pls!
OMGosh I'm standing behind this computer clapping & cheering !! I love you for this comment !! Can I quote you from now on ? lol.. but I'm so serious !! Your kids are so Blessed to have you, you are caring & open !! What you just said is so true in EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE !! ALWAYS HAVE A VALID REASON for what you're doing & what you want. I will definitely keep more videos coming, I am making it a PRIORITY for 2010.. I'm adding this comment to the info box right now !! Thank you so much Ma'am =)
my mom what shut up about crazy i am for cutting my hair.........but, as she sees more naturals in the media and in public in general her wheels are starting to turn.......she's starting to wonder why so many are becoming natural so people will come around and most importantly no one should big chop until they're ready just like you said! great advice!
Yeah you're so right, people are starting to change their opinions about it... the youtube community is growing like a wildfire and so many more women are aware of how to properly care for our hair type and as a result are anxious to learn about their natural hair too !! I'm so happy... even if you stay relaxed, to at least change the minds and opinions of natural hair is such an awesome feat... Thank you for that comment =)
this was great...it's a shame that some parents perpetuate ignorance and self-hatred...it's going to be so funny in a couple years when so many of us BCers have long healthy natural hair with all the styling options and no sacrifice of ones health or hair
(1 of 2) I was thinking the EXACT same thing to myself. I know people will say that they don't hate themselves, they just have preferences. That was always my thinking/justification for relaxing & other things like makeup, weaves/wigs,etc... I realize though I was in fact a victim to these existing beauty standards even though I still found natural hair to be so beautiful and alluring... Even though I can appreciate OUR beauty in every form, I still held society's standard or beauty as my own.
(2) I'm glad that I've began to define my own standard. I hate to sound cliche' with that, but that's SOO TRUE and from the heart. I don't want to conform anymore, I want to be me and if ppl say my puff/afro is not professional or cute, oh well kick rocks lol.. this is how my hair grows !! I dont want to look european. I'm a black woman with unique qualities and features lol.. Sometimes they want what I have !! That's why they pay for collagen lips, fake tans and rear implants lol...
Great advice girl! Taking that step to BC is a big deal, and they'll definitely know when they're ready. No amount of negativity can deter them once they're ready, and they've made up their mind. Great video girl....as usual!
Thanks D !!! You're so right. Once it's time, you just KNOW... I hated to upset everyone who didn't understand why I was transitioning, but my happiness came first once I knew it was time. I would be miserable if I were still transitioning now
hey im 17 & this is really great advice for transitioners.. it really helps because i know ppl can be harsh.. my cuz asked me why i was transitioning and said i needed to relax my hair and that i may not have 'good' natural hair. lol and i couldn't do anything with my natural hair but put it in one :| lol i told her she was narrow minded and ignorant yes a bit harsh but i kinda hurt that she wasn't supporting me but you're really encouraging and supportive.. kudos to you!! lol
oh thank you but all Kudos to you for standing up in what you believe in !! at 17, I was too worried what other people thought about me to think for myself.. peer conformity is a trip..so sad but true....
u so funny girl!! I agree with the DO IT advice.. I tell the sista's hey let me know when u do !!! but hey cause u have to live with it.. don't expect to look like... kinkycurlycoil expect to look like U!!!!
lol, I love your advice and personality Toy !! thats so true though... at first in March when I first decided to transition, I was hoping I would look like DPrincess28 with my natural hair... ummm not happening! lol.. her hair is gorgeous ! but I LOVE what I have and I was going to love it no matter what it came out like =)
yes DPrincess28 gawjus!! girl ...u better tell it... I came under the natural inspired "Sheacocoaluv " and clearly u can look up to people natural hair journeys but "U" soley will have to live with it!!!
thanks Trice =) I have an HD Kodak Z1285.. it has great clarity, but I'm unable to edit it w/ windows movie maker or any other program for that matter so it gets annoying. Other than that, I LOVE it! I just have to upload my vids directly on here w/o editing
