The patterns are essentially formed by the sound waves physically pushing the materials around. There are midpoints in between the high and low parts of the waves that the sand sort of collects in, forming the patterns you see. Higher frequencies have shorter wavelengths while lower ones have longer waves, making the patterns more complex the higher the frequency.
