The scene in the hospital is excellent on so many levels. Rawls doesn't even begin to offer a HINT of comfort until he gets out his unquestionable hatred of McNulty. Easily my favorite part of Season 1.
If you see the whole scene, Raymond Foerster steals the show. He's the short bald one in the gray suit. Also of note, the guy who looks kind of like Valchek who's really decorated is the original Commissioner. This was his only episode as the actor died right after. He's mentioned in the series finale and they finally reveal he, like Burrell, falsified stats. Warren Frazier is his name
McNulty is so manly the only way to console such a MAN is to abuse him. One way to look at it. Love him in bullet vest, his warrior armor, he takes on the weight of the world because he's manly enough to feel it and carry it. Dominick West is a great looking actor among a lot of handsome actors. But the McNulty character is enough to drive a sane woman to distraction. Did the show know it was doing this to us?????????
@GoldeneyePwner Under-rated? Please find me a review of The Wire that is anything less than glowing. For crying out loud, it's got a 9.7/10 on IMDb! It's like the highest rated thing on there! Did you perhaps mean not widely viewed?
Oh, and cinema means movies. The Wire was a television series.
I don't normally do this, but that post just got me. Were you trolling? If so, 9/10! Almost as high a rating as The Wire.
@Nano0k Bro, do you see it being talked about in the media? No. It's always America's Top Bullshit. I know virtually anyone who has watched all 5 seasons understands its greatness. Perhaps the wording came out bad. It was not viewed as widely as I think it should be. It got a 15/10 from me. All better now?

I can't believe he's gay. He was one of my favorite characters in the show, and they had to ruin him. He probably goes home, wears a pink dress and has sex with men.
I should warn everyone who didn't watch The Wire yet. Every other show you have watched or you gonna watch in the future will seems to be shallow and really not worth your time ;)
@damianpsx damianpsx, I first experienced that with 'The shield'. I knew no show would ever leave me satisfied, except for The Wire. And now that I'm done with The Wire, I know that even Shield is way inferior to this magnum opus. Simply put the greatest television series ever aired.
One of the top 5 best scenes of the wire, awesome how rawls rips into mcnulty yet appreciates the situation and lets him know he is not to blame, great acting all around
Rawls is great. "Where the fuck are my stats, hell i bet there's a stripper standing outside with em right now. She'll walk in here show us some tit, give us a wiff of that muff and show me my fucking stats. That would be creme fucking brulee" lol. Rawls is a great character in the wire obessed with his stats.
man...this scene is the real deal. i mean, wow. hbo shows do a tremendous job of baring the human heart and showing us drama...not the IDEA of what we THINK is drama, but drama, period.
Love the scene with Rawls and McNulty in the hospital. That was some real shit right there -- he had it out for McNulty, and made no attempts to hide that fact. But He still consoled McNulty -- even though he thought he was "a gaping asshole".
"And the motherfucker saying this, he hates your guts McNulty. So you know if it was on you, I'd be the son of a bitch to say so."
This changed Rawls for me, it showed the human being inside the asshole and even though I never truly liked the man, this scene put him in a better light for the rest of the show
Rawls was standing for Daniels and his whole squad when he said Mcnulty played a lot of cards and made a lot of people do a lot of things that they didn't want to do. Hope ya'll caught on to that. Just because he didn't say it doesn't mean he wasn't giving then they props.
This was the only time that i had some respect for Rawls character on this show. He took command and cleared out anyone who were blocking the detectives working the crime scene, let the DEA know what he thought of their lost drug money, and took a distraught McNulty .and reassured him that if he was responsible for Kima getting shot he would tell him so.
i really like rawls and believe that he's a victim of the system more than say...marlo or clay.
but this isn't the only time in the show that rawls reduces a major police situation into its simplest elements in order to avoid seeing the situation for what it really is. here, it was the superiors that forced major crimes into the situation that got kima shot. later when hamsterdam is explained to the city council, he leaves out the demand for good stats while emphasizing the bare bones
really good point. never saw it that way. thanks for replying.
this is exactly what makes the wire such a great show. after like 3 viewings of the whole series I can read someones opinion and it sheds a whole new light on the story.
My favorite cop scene in all of The Wire.
