Screen protector is not needed. Just get the magnetic cover to protect the screen when travelling and that'll do the trick. It's not easy to scratch the iPad screen.

The screen protector instructions aren't odd...they make more sense than some of the cheaper ones. Wetting your fingers keeps from getting finger prints under the protector, and dampening the protector helps to keep/rid the air and dust out from underneath, and lets you get a better seal.

Honestly Kate, don't worry THAT much about scratching the iPad's screen. I've smeared pure charcoal across it and it cleans up fine. The best bet is to just go get a smart cover. Love the thing.

Yay iPad! Hope you get some sleep :) I prefer a backcover myself, to protect the nice aluminium, the front glass wont' scratch easily. Get a TPU transparent cover for the back (NOT soft gel). You can remove and reinstall it! much better than putting a film on it, imho. It has a nice rubbery grip, but TPU also is very smooth on the surface. It's easier to hold your ipad for games or reading. You can find ones that are clear with a cool diamond pattern and such.
