I suppose an easier way to illustrate this concept is by recognizing the need for balance in all things.

Without a slight bit of . . . "that sounds kinda' wrong" (dissonance) the harmonious moments of . . . "that sounds absolutely amazing!" (which sends those wonderfully sublime chills down your spine everytime you hear it) get lost in the crowd or mix of chords.
