  • I met him when he was at the top of his short career. But, he didn't deserve to die in Grimsby, in a poorhouse, and be buried there, Almost unknown. (Broken and broke)

  • My grandad used to love this record! Brings back happy memories.

  • " I love to go a wandering " ,Version for Postpersons

delivering, delivering, my delivery pouch on my back

  • norfolk bred and proud haha

  • The Singing Postman was a dreadful postman.

  • I'm not sure that's the voice of the original Singing Postman, Allan Smethurst... Or if it is, it's maybe not the original recording.

  • Born and bred in Sheffield with Sherringham born and bred parents. My dad ALWAYS used to sing this in front of my friends to embarrass me.

  • oi loike this song!

  • I'm a screamo-loving 15 year old, but this song is just purely amazing :)

  • Sometimes, I don't like my American English.

  • My taxi driver can do a perfect voice of have you got a light boy lmao

  • Lmao! :D

  • My dad was born in Loddon, Norfolk and he died in 2009, he kept his norfolk accent.

  • Norfolk is the place to be.

  • Norfolk ftw :D

  • Wow this put a smile on my face. My grandad used to sing this song about my Gran, he passed away last year. :( The accent aint bad but if you heard him you'd know a proper Norfolk accent, they lived on a farm in Brooke, Norfolk all his life. Im gonna have to play this to my gran. thanks for the smile i got.

  • @drakeracing573

It took me ages to get that good with the accent lol... I'm from Canbridge originally ;o)

    Mark...

  • @drakeracing573

My dad took me to Swaffahm, to the George, I think, the lino went up the walls and that's he first saw your man. My dad liked his songs. We're yellow bellies but ...we're village folk and I'm glad.

  • @drakeracing573 .... My granddad used to sing this to us aswell. He was the most lovely person you ever could meet. I miss him so much. Also from the Norfolk area, I love the accent. I'm sorry you lost your granddad recntly

  • and its wroxham way not roxham because he was from wroxham in norfolk

  • Classic. The Singing Postman is timeless. His songs are small masterpieces on an epic scale. He may be gone but the songs live on.

  • @MikiStrange

    Thank you ;o)

    Mark...

  • Smoking during pregnancy, you wouldn't get this in the charts these days.

  • My mother went to school with the singing postman and I was growing up in Norfolk around the time he had a hit with this record, so it brings back many memories.

This record won him an Ivor Novello award and it knocked the Beatles off the number one spot in the charts in 1965. Sadly, he drank most of his money away and ended up in a Sally Ann hostel in Grimsby, where he died.

I remember his songs well and always enjoyed them very much. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that I still do.

  • @MrCubely

I'm glad you liked my version of this classic song. I spent ages trying to perfect the accent lol...

    Mark....

  • @gerdenshed

heh. you caught me. I thought there was something not quite right about it. I've been away from Norfolk for around 30 years so I figured it was me being a bit rusty. It's not bad though, not many people can get it.

The real giveaway is the strumming. Allan Smethurst used a fingerpicking style which suits the songs much better.

    Good work though. :-)

  • @MrCubely

I've had many happy holidays in Sheringham. I've also stayed in East and West Runcton both lovely places. I'm from Cambridge myself ;o)

    Mark...

  • Being a retired Postman myself, I have a good feeling for "The singing postman"!

  • Marvellous. Love the video too.

  • @saxby01

Thank you my friend, I'm glad you liked it ;o)

    Mark....

  • I have to say thank you to you. hearing this reminded me of home and this is nice.

  • @1992Niamh

    Thank you Niamh ;o)

    Mark...

  • & he out sold the Beatles (& the Stones) at his ‘height’ momentarily - easy to see why. Plus I was there when he performed a ‘gig’ on the roof of a bus shelter in sunny Letheringsett, Holt, Norfolk - UK ( :

  • It's spelt wroxham btw :)

    Gotta love Norfolk :)

  • Great job - how about sharing the chords ??

  • Excellent ! Love It !!

  • Very good Mark. I think if Bernard Shaw had met you he would have written a play just for you instead of projecting Eliza Doolittle the flower girl in Pygmalion. You are very talented. I have never heard of the singing postman before but I do enjoy your version of it.

    Thank you very much.:) lol.

    Warm regards,

    Dimple.

  • sht this brings back of memories of chiild hood and my father

  • Your voice has a nice tone. I like your rendition of this song.

I've been meaning to do it for 20 years lol... I've had a couple of hlidays in Holt recently. I know I'm one but there are just too many visitors now,,, It's so crowded and the number of cars is horrendous.

    Mark....

  • I knew him back in the 1970's, he used to come to a Pub I used to sing in The City Arms in Peterborough. I 'pinched' the idea of this song and wrote and recorded 'Ah yew got your ears on'? to go with the CB radio craze that was going on at the time. He always got me to sing it for him when I was appearing at the Pub. By the way, there's a copy of my record on ebay, they only want about £70 for it, Mind you it's worth the money to hear a Cockney trying to sing in a Norfolk accent!!!!

  • Great memories for you my friend! It took me some time to get the accent anywhere near right. Why don't you record it again and put it up on YT? I'd love to hear you sing it ;-)
