At least the electric junk needs dragging along there. Putting up electric equipment along the S&C would be a travesty. Overhead electrified lines are so claustrophobic and ugly.
2007 was a great year for railfanning. Crewe was an attraction for train enthusiasts. Things seem to be settling down now, not many diversions unless you rely on a signal failure. Great footage mate.
the pendolino needs electrified line and some routes arn't electrified so another non electrified train comes to tow it along the non electrified track
God, how much i miss the days of Virgin 47-hauled diversions over the S&C.
I find it funny that there are organised 'walks' across Ribblehead Viaduct for £15 a head now, when back in the late '80s my dad and grandpa just sauntered across both Ribblehead and Arten Gill Viaducts one day themselves for free. There was no freight running so they knew when it was safe. You would never get away with that sort of thing these days!
It didnt break down. The Pendolino is an electric train that normally runs on the West Coast mainline. This train was following a diversion due to maintenance on the line. The route it is taking is the Settle to Carlise line, which has not enjoyed the same investment and has not being electrified. In fact for years it has been threatened with closure.
Was threatened with closure. That threat was removed in 1989. Since then, the line has had major investment, with much of the track been replaced and new signals along the line. It is becoming a major route again, particular for freight and can see several freights a day, which is mostly coal.
Yeah I used to hear them grinding up the airevalley in the dead of night when I was a kid. I don't live there anymore. But it used to be awe inspiring to be in bed and to hear nothing, but then hear a freight train grinding along slowley up the valley that and the wind and rain would be the only noise. I now live in a city and it's not quite so atmospheric.
If they electrified the rest of the line from skipton to carlisle they wouldn't have to drag them! They could also do a class 333 leeds - carlisle service. Why exactly did they stop at skipton? Anyone know...?
We could see it yet, despite the bone/airheaded anti-electrification stance offered by a Government that understands nothing about science and technology: It only listens to Rich Scallies who want to rip us all off.
What's the route when they go via the Settle Carlisle? Do they keep doing to Leeds, and then use the TPX route to get to Manchester, or do they have to shunt to the other end at Settle Junction and use the Morcambe Branch?
Correct, the normal diversionary route offf the WCML is Preston - Blackburn - Clitheroe - Hellifield and then Via the S&C to Carlisle through Appleby etc.
Regular passenger services operate only to Clitheroe and there are no scheduled services between Clitheroe and Hellifield.
Odd that they go slow - Class 57s can go at up to 95mph, and the limit is 60mph after the viaduct.
I guess all trains have to go slow over Ribblehead viaduct because of its age and relative lack of maintenance. Hopefully it uses the 60mph sections more effectively!
Which Pendolino is that? I can't read the name or loco number

As far as I know they go to Hellifield and then loop round through Blackburn to Preston.
Check out the network map on National Rail website.

Ah Hellifield! I forgot about Hellifield.
EPPower 4 years ago
Is the Hellifield to Clitheroe line open to regular passenger services? Or is it just used for freight and diversions (I think that is the case)
Surely there is justification for providing a full service along that line!

They used to run a weekend service between blackpool and carlisle along that helifield loop. It was for the tourists mainly.
